Ok basically Bungie needs to bring back the great feel the marines had in Halo 1 to Reach. In Halo 1 I loved the marines, they were funny, and helpful, and incredibly useful. Its not that the game couldn't be played without them, but you actually appreciated their help, and they were always used in helpful decisive maneuvers. Such as in Truth and Reconciliation, When you were sniping if you were spotted, the marines ran in used their skills to kill the Covenant, and ACTUALLY distract them so the Covenant were not like "Oh hey look a squad of humans are coming they cant do a thing, so i might as well ignore what could obviously be a huge threat and keep shooting at the sniper."
And once you secured the ship's landing zone, chances are you were pretty low on support, so when echo 419 dropped in fresh troops to storm the ship you were like oh good I'm not doing this alone, and its not my wounded marines left, they are getting pulled out and these men will take over. And once your in the ship they wait at the gate while you go around and open it so your support runs in and your relieved. And last example being at the end of the level when you secure that control room and the marines stay put while you find the captain once you return you find your marines dead and its like damn there goes the backup our chances are lowered. Like that was something out of the halo books. Out of nowhere something bad happens and your set back a bit. The marines were done right in that game and if Bungie did the same thing with improved A.I. it would be awesome.
In halo 2 the campaign itself was annoying so the non helpful marines that were actually annoying, never again bungie.
In halo 3 its hard to explain but basically, the marines looked awesome, sadly they were not nearly as valuable and good as fighting as they were cool. And you didn't feel like a team with these guys cause they didn't do much, they could die and no one would care, they were just cool but completely unhelpful. And its not like you needed the help they didn't provide. So if you made them look that awesome but were actually good and like the marines in halo 1 that would be great. As a last example I would spend more time trying to win so i din't lose marines and jumping in front of fire for marines because I could take it cause I was to powerful and it just wasnt a team thing.
Also as a last thing Bungie AWESOME job in Halo 3 ODST you finnally figurd out to put dead Covenant along with dead marines at sites of previous battles. So we can get ammunition for our weapons along with it not looking stupid. "Oh well look another 30 dead marines and not a single Covenant soldier not even a Grunt, wow we suck."
Oh and to any who read this forgive the grammar its 2:00 a.m.

I have to agree with you there, I still play H:CE pretty often and the difference in th fighting quality of the Marines from the first (and still the best) game and Halo 3 is astounding.

And I actually cared if a Marine bought it in the first game, and often sought revenge on whoever/whatever took him out, whereas by Halo 3 I couldn't care less.

So, yes Bungie, bring back the awesome Marines! And get rid of the pansies. Also, bring back the MA5B, way better than the puny MA5C and the battle rifle.

Yeah I really agree; the Marines have really degraded through the years . . .

I could not agree more the ones in halo 1 werent exactly rocket scientists but THEY COULD ACTUALLY KILL STUFF several times on heroic they would steal my kills on the grunts and gang up to bring elites down.
In 2 and 3 they were.....well....THE WORST SQUADMATES IN ANY GAME I HAVE EVER PLAYED and giving them a good weapon wont help they are then more of a threat to themselves then the enemy!
In short in halo 1 i would save as many marines as i could, sometimes id restart levels if they had died but they were so awesome they sometimes didnt need your help anyway but in 2 and 3 i would often kill them for being a pain.

Also a few more things I thought about, those halo 1 marines need to meet the MA5C so they can shot more accurately, and at full auto if necessary. And with improved A.I. they would be great. And more weaknesses for the current marines. They should not be allowed to punch or kick or whatever at least at Brutes cause once on tsavo highway i used the troop carrie hog and brought four marines and saved the two pinned down ones and met up with the fur otheres so i had an army of like 10 marines then during the battle a Brute captain came up and they all surrounded him and started hitting him, he fought back. I couldn't get a shot in fear of hitting the marines and i was hoping their hits might do something but the Brute killed all of them in like four moves.

And let not forget the Very useful crew members that would scream "I'm a cowardly Fool" as he wielded a .500 S&W Auto magnum that could EXPLODE AN ELITES HEAD

and yes that is the very proper way to describe the Halo CE pistol

Posting on bungie.net should require that the user has had to have read a chapter book all the way through.

Yeah, they REALLY need to bring back the Halo 1 ones.

Ever noticed how everything from Halo 1 was better?

People keep telling me to get a life... I am getting an education, I have a lovely girlfriend and alot of friends... I thought this was having a life? Gues I was wrong...

What? The Marines in Halo 1 sucked, it took like 3 plasma shots from a grunt on Legendary to kill them... Sure they were usefull, they gave the Covenant other people to shoot at... For 3-5 seconds :P Anyway, I liked the Marines in Halo 3 alot more, they held their ground longer, could actually hit the enemy and they didnt just run in charging the enemy... But thats just my personal opinion :)

I hope they mix it a little, so everyone will be happy.

Iam enjoying Halo Reach and revisiting some past Bungie games, iam a big fan of Bungie and their online community.

It would be cool.

  • 10.17.2009 4:25 AM PDT

lol

In Halo CE they actually retreated when they threw down the towel.

Anyways, I agree on the appearance aspect. Although the marines in the Halo series were never really that good, they look like amazing operators. I think they should work in a tight, tactical manner, like the ODSTs in the deleted scene for the recent live action short. They also need to pack more of a punch as a team instead of walking in front of eachother's line of fire all the time, or shooting rockets too close to the tank......:(

Yeh, it's about 2:00 AM here as well...
Good topic, I'm grabbing some R&R

  • 10.17.2009 4:31 AM PDT

I agree completely with the OP. We need marines from Halo:CE. They were badBlam! They could actually kill the enemy. In Halo 3, they are the people we kill with our BR's for ammo, because they are practicly worthless...

  • 10.17.2009 4:35 AM PDT

"Go then, there are other worlds than these."

Agreed. While the Halo 1 marines couldn't drive, at least that kept them from running me over like they seem to do at the drop of a hat in Halo 3. :/

and another thing to add if I hear "Hey he was mine!" one more time, you can't hold em responsible for what I might do.

And has anyone noticed I only post on my thread after midnight, God I need sleep.
Anyways something I noticed that pissed me off so much, in ODST when I was with Buck in the Gauss Hog at the highway level he would always shoot for the very tip of the Wraith's right end you know the sliver of armor that makes a corner, its the seriously what the heck. Why are you aiming there it was redonculous.

Walls of text are not your enemies, they don't bite, they might bore you or make you read. But occasionally they are useful, and tell you things you might want to know.

  • 10.18.2009 11:10 PM PDT

Truth.

I want to see an elite, then turn my back shooting others because I know the marines can take care of it.

Not that it will come up and kick my -blam!-

  • 10.18.2009 11:14 PM PDT

Confound these ponies, they drive me to insomnia.

Also, Applejack ftw.

Yeah, really... Ever since the first awe-inspiring game, here's what's happened...

The covenant discovered crisco, and made EVERYTHING slick and shiney.

The UNSC downgraded and threw away good guns.

Brutes were concieved.

That is all.

THE GOOD THING... Pelicans are WAY cooler now!

  • 10.18.2009 11:29 PM PDT

Everything from Halo 1 was...better

Halo 1 marines should be in Reach. Why? Because the Marines in Halo 1 were from Reach because the PoA escaped from Reach meanwhile in Halo 2,3 and ODST there from Earth and because there from Earth and Earth isn't a Heavy Military Installation like Reach, they suck.

I have never yelled at an ai in a video game like i have buck in odst. How he made it off Reach is beyond me.

  • 10.19.2009 12:03 AM PDT

If by that you mean: Bungie needs to make the AI act in ways that make us believe we're in a battlefield, then I agree.

=)

The Halo 1 Marines are from the POA, a ship whose classification is a joke within the fleet. The Reach Marines are from Reach, humans #2 stronghold and #1 military spaceport.

And the Halo 1 Marines' AI is terrible and anyone who disagrees hasn't played the series on Legendary. I'll leave the explaining to Bad Cyborg (who has played more H1 campaign than anyone, and hates H2 more than anyone).

"As for combat skills, on any level above Normal a Marine is barely a match even for a Grunt. They rarely fire in any sort of aggressive manner, or get around to actually putting down an enemy (which is agonizing when you're waiting to reload and you can quite plainly see that an Elite only needs one more bullet). Nor do they grasp the concept of cover. In fact, it seems to me that they spend half of their time rolling around like Chinese acrobats, rather than doing anything useful, like firing. As the Elites close in, you want to shout to your Marines "Use the trigger, dammit!". But no, they just fire the occasional burst and proceed to get annihilated.

And when they do get around to firing, they're just as likely to shoot fellow Marines in the back. You can see this at first hand, up on the plateau in the rockslide megabattle. Just stand at the back and watch your Marines cut each other to pieces. And it's no wonder, the way they keep moving in and out of each other's lines of fire. But it's not just single shots in the back; it can be whole bursts, one after another, as if the shooter is clinically blind. It would be quite amusing, if you weren't putting your life on the line to save these bozos.

And then there's the grenade reaction business. If they react at all to an incoming glowing blue ball, they'll probably still hang around inside the blast radius, even the guy who raised the alert! And why do they dive to the ground when it's just Master Chief lobbing a grenade at the enemy? Heck, I'm not that bad a throw, surely.

Marines also sometimes run around making a racket or shooting, when you're trying to be stealthy. Now that's really annoying.

And don't even get me started on the business of Marines jumping into Ghosts and running me over! Nowadays I'm liable to just send a rocket their way before they can get any speed up. "Oops! Sorry!". Actually, a less drastic measure is to grenade unused Ghosts beforehand, so they're turned over and Marines can't get in; but that always feels rather artificial."
