Halo: Heretic or Hero---An Elite's Story
Choose your own destiny

I am guessing they will, partly because they do in Halo Wars, but in Halo 1 they did not speak a word in our language. Is there a possibility that they won't in Halo: Reach? I think it is more fun when you can understand them, especially Grunts.

Oh, and there would be no funny IWHBYD lines if they don't speak English...

Discuss.

Grunts spoke English in Halo 1...

But I hope the rest of the Covenant does not speak English in Reach. It makes them seem more unknown, more alien.

Were it so easy.

No, they only started in Halo 2.

Oh and Halo wars did a lot of things wrong according to "canon".

Peace through superior firepower.

They can speak bad English.

... Covenant does not speak english. The only way you can hear it that way is.. well is so you can understand what they are saying. Bungie wants you to know what the covenant are saying half the time.

Actually the Covenant does know english, they studied it when they learned about the exsistance of humans. Those that were to fight against the humans had to know it. So yeah they will.

I'd like to disagree. They, well, did. Less, yes, but still some. I'd guess that we'll hear less English than in Halo 3 because the translation tech might not be up to scratch, but It won't all be "wort wort wort"s

  • 10.16.2009 4:52 PM PDT

There should be an option.

  • 10.16.2009 4:52 PM PDT

Dr. Gelato, MD.

I would like to know where they learned it.

The Covenant and humanity have communicated several times throughout the Halo series, the first instance coming to mind when the Brute says to Reynolds "Tell me its location!" to which Reynolds replies, "Kiss...my...ass."

I'm not going to start another "Canonization of Halo Wars" debate, but you're wrong and see here for my arguments.

The Covenant has had the most common UNSC languages translated basically since the war began and the UNSC had working translations of the Covenant language within five years. The UNSC also has real-time electronic translators so their troops don't have to learn the language to understand it.

The only real reason that only the Grunts spoke English in Halo 1 is because Bungie didn't want to (or have time to) record much dialog for the other races.

Stop PMing me if you are group recruiting.

The UNSC translated most of the Covenant language before they attacked Reach, so it is very likely. (Source- Halo: The Fall of Reach)

Just because Bungie started having the Covenant "speak" English in Halo 2, doesn't mean canonically, in the Haloverse they haven't before.

liek omg u guyz...

omg ponies (ok ya it aint that bad imo)

GRRR IM RIGHT UR WRONG AND GHEY LOLOLOL UR GHEY

lova ya internet, never change :D

In the Fall of Reach (book) it says the Covenant studied us during our first encounter, learning our language (among other things). In other words it's canon that they can speak English. Though you wouldn't expect them to whenever they are fighting us, then I'd go with "Spartans have translators"

They don't but ONI research allows your helmet to translate them

I just wasted a few seconds of your life and you're never getting them back!

I thought nearly all marines and spartans (as well as covenant) had translators in their armour or something. After all, they do talk a lot in Halo 3.

I'd love to be a 10 year old and tell my mom I'm going on an adventure out into the world catching Pokemon, with her full support. Never mind the fact that there are rapists, criminals, and murders out there, or the fact that I may get killed by a Pokemon.

Luckily I have Pikachu.

Covenant all have audio translaters, but the excuse in Halo CE is that they weren't fully developed ((mainly for the dumber races)).

I hunt for the Prophet of Contentment, the San 'Shyumm that murdered my son, and stole his birthright, his Energy Sword. They call our species Heretics. They claim to all that our tongues sting, our words a vile poison that feeds on the unworthy. I have seen the true face of Heresy. The head of a gallant warrior lay on the ground. His neck scorched and blistered, scarred by his own blade. I shall retrieve the weapon, and drive it through that bastard's heart! Punishment for his sins is nigh.

There was a little bit on this in Fall of Reach, bringing up the famous phrase "Your destruction is the will of the gods, and we are their instrument."

That was the first thing any Covenant EVER said in English to humans, and that happened WAY back on Harvest.

And Warlord: I recall not being around to finish the debate. I will not start it back up, but I will say there are good points, as well as some things I disagree with. But let's keep this thread IN-hand.
