The more focus the game has, the better it is.
HaloCE was amazing, Halo2 was great, Halo3 was bad, ODST was great.
Reach is only 1 place. We are once again "shipwrecked" when Covenant attacks... Many similiarities with Halo1. We might visit a Covenant ship or base, travel in barren lands... Atleast we aren't "finishing the fight" like in Halo3.
Now if only campaign used 1 full disc and multiplayer/firefight was on the 2nd one...
And the reasoning would be simplest explained by the amount of content and how long the game was in relation to that content. H1 is far too repetitive, H3 isn't long enough for all the stuff it has, and H2 has it in balance. In addition to that, the quality of the campaign is top-notch most of the way through.
As for story, 2>3>1(>O) again. While Halo 1 has the best 1st-time story, it is simple and offers little for someone who beats the campaigns multiple times. H2 had both the very personal Arbiter plot and massively expanding the universe and the Covenant side of things, along with the symbolism and theories induced by it. H3 wrapped the outer universe nicely, and there's also the mid-range story of estabilishing the context of the end of the war.
Actually a pretty good summary. H1 is a bit repetive, but still fun while H2 has good balance and H3 is way too short for its content. H2 has technical difficulties but as time goes by I see all of these games getting a bit unsophisticated, H1's AI isn't as good as it was etc.
But storywise H1 beats H3. Halo1 might have been generic, but it was interesting. The first half of Halo3 was way too dull trek after now-boring-Truth while the 2nd half was over the top rushing for finish line. It was a bit like Matrix:PON - I liked how detailed the beginning was, but was dissapointed to see that I jumped from Reloaded's end right to the final battle of Revolution. There should have been something in bethween.
