Subject: Reach needs BETTER Ai!

Light a log on fire and a man will be warm for the rest of the day. Light a man on fire, and that man will be warm for the rest of his life.

There is a TL:DR version at the bottom

Halo 1 was pretty good with AI... it wasn't that impressive but it wasn't ridiculously easy.

I think anyone would agree with me that most of the Halo 3 and Halo ODST AI act exactly like big punching bags.

The only AI I really see is walking towards you (sometimes), shooting at you, or dodging grenades.

AI should hide when it is under fire, should actually be sortof tactical like coming after you when you have been damaged or throwing grenades around corners. If an AI charges you, it should be in groups.

You know, AI should be... well... you know, intelligent

I also REALLY miss the Halo 2 brutes. It was completely ridiculous in ODST having a human marine punch a brute in the face once and have it die. In both Halo 3 and Halo ODST the brutes were not scary at all and completely easy, even in legendary mode.

In halo 2 I was usually terrified of brutes because once a brute got close, I was screwed, I'd go flying across the room with my shields completely stripped down!

I was completely disappointed with brutes in Halo 3.

What is even worse, Halo teammates do almost absolutely nothing. Marines will take a few shots, stand in the open for about 5 seconds, and take a few shots with the AR again which usually miss. The only time AI has ever been helpful in the history of halo is AI with a sniper rifle.
I like playing a game knowing there is some progression in the battle even if I'm not a part of it.

In halo 3, when the swarm of bugs attacked, I only had one or two shooting at me at a time in a horde of like 15. I should want to be -blam!- hiding behind a rock with my teamates while there are constantly 20 plasma bolts flying in my direction, not maybe one or two.

Halo Reach will be AMAZING if the AI is done right.
-Ai needs to be intelligent ...
-Ai needs to hide when damaged, take advantage of you when you are damaged, like throwing grenades at you when you hide, or instead of having a single brute raging, have them all charge you at the same time
-Ai needs to not completely stand in the open, it should at the very least move around a bit instead of the occasional step in one direction.. it needs to run back and forth and actually dodge bullets you fire at it, not just grenades. Im emphasizing here run back and forth, maybe as fast as a spartan during combat, both enemy and friendly. I HATEE Hate hate firing an entire 'clip' of plasma fire at an enemy only to have it stand there taking it. I want a FIGHT, not target practice.
-Difficulty modes should incorpate AI intelligence, not just damage taken and damage given.
-Your teamates should actually help the battle, it would actually feel like a battle, it would add real depth to the game and make it an extremely pleasureable gaming experience.

Even though you are master chief, you should really only be taking out maybe 1\5 of the enemies on the field at most, not 99% of them. You still lose the game if you don't do your part right, but it's not having a bunch of objects standing around not doing anything, and you taking shots from maybe one or two angles only ducking somtimes.

-Spartans should not be able to physically injure brutes unless it is an assassination, elites should be difficult to kill close up. You may only want to punch an elite when you are full shields and they are nearly out. None of this crap in halo 3 where you run up and punch a brute 2x and it dies immediately.

Legendary mode should be legendary, I'm tired of taking two plasma bolts and dying in legendary mode when all the enemies are just standing there in the open with me unloading hundreds of rounds into enemies and them doing nothing about it...

This is a semi-rant, but I really think Halo needs to make its enemies MUCH smarter, and deadlier (in terms of intelligence). In terms of damage given and damage taken, standard heroic mode was more than enough. It also needs to make friendlies actually useful.

tl:dr version

AI needs to NOT be target practice! AI needs to actually be a FIGHT!

I personally think there should be AI for the multiplayer. Don't get me wrong, I do enjoy playing online, but I'd also like to just play by myself everynow and again. It might make for some interesting custom games.

You will be playing as a spartan in a squad of five spartans. Improving the AI is going to be the focus of the campaign for Bungie, because if you allies suck, then you don't feel like you are part of a legendary force that could only be destroyed by firebombing an entire planet. Likewise, the enemies need to be strong to provide an appropriate challenge.

Also, correct me if I am wrong, but didn't Elites in Halo 2 have an obssesion with climbing on top of boxes where they would just get shot at from cover?

Guess the brutes aren't the only ones that need their AI improved. But yeah, flinching is a definite no go.

Those are the games I usually have the most fun in, like Quake wars or Timesplitters.

Quake wars wasn't really that good in itself at all, but the ai was fun to fight against.

Timesplitters was just a good game, and had good multiplayer AI

Multiplayer AI is much much harder to program than campaign AI, and really wouldn't give me all that much of a challenge. Unlike games like gears, Halo is much more dynamic, the levels aren't super flat, theres jumping in three dimensions, it isn't nearly as simple as gears (from a moving around standpoint) so its much harder to create AI for Halo.

What about games like Perfect Dark? The Multiplayer AI in that was fantastic.

It may be hard, but it is completely necessary.

I think for Reach to be successful this needs to be done, or it may be classified as 'just another halo game'
good AI is the one thing Halo really lacks.

I agree that the higher difficulty setting should make the enemy smarter,
and i would go as far to say that difficulty setting sould not effect damage I'm tired of dumping half a mag of AR on a grunt on it still doesn't die

"They let me pick... did I ever tell you that? Choose whichever Spartan I wanted. You know me. I did my research. Watched as you became the soldier we needed you to be. Like the others you were strong and swift and brave, a natural leader. But you had something they didn't. Something no one saw but me. Can you guess? Luck."

I agree 150%. Brutes in halo 3/ODST felt like.... Grunts in a monkey suit.. They where really not that big of a threat.(Unless a cheiftan was right behind you...)

Halo 2 brutes where a threat... If one brute was charging you.. You where worried, and shooting and backing up and hoping he will die... In halo 1, Elites where smart. If there sheilds where drained, they would take cover and run around the block evading you till they where charged. If your shields where down, they would rush you till you die.

Also, whats with all the climbing on boxes..? Marines and Covenant alike just love to get on top of em.

Boxes grant one the power to see 5 feet higher.

< You touch my tush? >

i agree with the whole brutes thing cuz i loved how they were a challenge in halo 2 but i also liked how they looked in halo 3. if they could keep them looking like in halo 3 but make them hard to kill like in halo 2 that would be awesome.

  • 10.17.2009 12:27 AM PDT

I'm inclined to completely agree ! I feels like i'm the only one...but i have to say i don't understand why people thought the elites in halo were so fun to fight...maybe it's a nostalgia thing but i was playing halo 1 recently and the elites act just like the brutes, pop the shields and they charge, stick them with a nade and they charge. I just don't see why people like them so much.

Anyways i definitely think the AI is in need of a major overhaul and i'm liking the idea of making the enemies smarter as the difficulty increases it would make halo even MORE dynamic !

Yeah. I hate how in Leg when you get hit twice you die, but marines can take SO much more. And the marines are dumb and don't really fire at all. The AI in Halo 3 just generally is terrible. Halo 1's was really quite good. They need to REALLY work on the AI in this game.

EDIT: Also they need to make it that the difference on Leg isn't just the enemies have a lot of health. That's just dumb.

Yeah I would love to play some customs games alone or with only one friend and loads of bots.

the brutes in halo 2 did seem a lot stronger as well

  • 10.17.2009 1:19 AM PDT

Im gonna have to agree here. I mean the AI in Halo 3 wasnt terrible, it wasnt great, but deffinetly not terrible. If they would work on it abit and add in some new features it would really improve the gameplay overall.

And i agree about having Bots in custom games, I mean fire fight would of been amazing, if you had ODST to fight along side you without having to invite your friends (To just get lagged out haha).

Also would be nice if we could use Head sets to interact with the marines and all. I mean i know it would be hard to put in, based on accents, languages, and people with speach problems. But lets face it, nothing would be better then telling a group of marines to follow you instead of walking 10 feet, turning around, and seeing if they are behind you still.

  • 10.17.2009 1:26 AM PDT

< You touch my tush? >

they could add in a command button like in star wars battlefront 2 where you look at your allies and press the button and then they follow you or you can tell them to stop, instead of having to talk to them.

Multiplayer AI in Halo would be tedious, simply because of the multiple leveled maps, in GOW the maps contain less jumping and such, wheras in Halo we would get AI standing and shooting and probably playing far less dynamicly than a real player, and really being an easy target.

Yeah but that just seems un-halo like.

  • 10.17.2009 2:23 AM PDT

I agree that both Enemy and friendly AI need to be improved.

If, in fact, you are playing as one of a group of Spartans, I would not even buy the game if those fellow Spartans were as useless as allies have been in recent Bungie titles.

And I really WOULD like to fight enemies that can adapt to counter whatever strategy you may have had in mind when attempting to take them on.

  • 10.17.2009 2:50 AM PDT

I totally agree! I hope Bungie is going to read this! If not, well I hope they'd thought about the AI themselves.
