Pretty good idea.
However I do see people complaining when they say;
"It took me ages to get to that location just to lose because I couldn't walk faster!"
In ways it would complicate the way people play. Some people wouldn't care about getting those extra troops, get their fast. And win. Whilst other more dedicated people, would explore around for awhile, trying to find everytinhg useful as they could. Then come back to lose because they were not allowed the oppertunity to do certain things.
If this was any other game I would agree. But Halo has a world that was MENT to be explored. and enjoyed at the players own pace. Telling the player they need to hurry or they will fail the level would be heartbreaking.I think this would obviously aplly to Multiplayer battles. You arrive late with the support, the other team who got their support before them would be winning. Because in online games, that kind of "being fast, efficient and skillful" is important. Single player is more about the way the player becomes immersed in the universe.I took that into consideration because I saw something like this coming.
the main point is: you win some, and you lose some.
In the part were you come "late" you still get the battle, but you did it a different way. I mean, I don't think you should make it impossible to win without going the long way and getting those reinforcements, it'd just be harder, and longer but more of a challenge but you could do it.
The point I wanted to make was its a different way of doing things, it changes up how you play. if you want to plow into every battle you can, you'll win some and lose some. Just like real war. If you don't play the defense good enough, you fall back and you lose that point. Obviously that wouldn't be the case in all battles, at some points you would have to defend to the last (in this case you) man without any alternate ways to do it.
As for distance, a sprint button wouldn't be far fetched because spartans can run FAST and run LONG. And that's without adding vehicles along the way. You don't want it to be boring and you'd take that into consideration when making the alternate routes to play the game.
But I see what your saying about it maybe being "too" open.
