Subject: Halo: Reach - More Realism?

Honor Light Your Way, Our Blood Shall Forge A Thousand Generations!.

I realize that Halo is a semi-cartoony game, but I'd like to see more realism.

Andybody who has ever played Halo: Custom Edition would know that it has some relistic aspects to it.

For example, the HUD bounces while you run, and when you melee, it shows you taking the butt of the rifle, then swinging it like a club.

I don't have much appreciation for Halo's melee animations. Just butting someone with the Magnum doesn't cut it for me. I want to see a Spartan take that Magnum, then violently use it as a close-combat weapon. I think they could be fixed up.

And as said in other posts, the enemies need to be stronger. Brute's shouldn't have to be taken down with a few bullets, it should take some effort.

Another thing I really liked about Halo: Combat Evolved (not Custom Edition) is that when you enter a Warthog in the sideseat, it's first person. I think they should bring this back, and I'd also like it to happen with mongooses, hornets, and prowlers. But this, of course, would be passenger only. Driving would be third person, as well gunner seat.

Another thing I'd like to see is better physics. Which I'm pretty sure there will be, seeing as how Reach is running on an AAA engine. But, for an example of BAD physics, let's take Halo 3.

Usually, when you die, your body will fall as you'd expect it to. Example: It'll fall, leaning against a wall.

However, these physics only apply to the maps structure. If you fall onto a barrel, or crate from forge, you slip right through it. I'm not very fond of this.

Another thing I'd like to see is sprinting. Spartan's have the ability to run up to 30MPH, I'd like to see it in action.

Also, Halo is the franchise that brought the whole "Look down at your feet in first person" aspect when Halo 2 came along. I'd like Bungie to take this to the next level. For instance, being able to see your shoulders, arms, and chest. When you look straight down, I feel the Spartan/Elite should have their weapons in kind of a mode where it's lowered. Like the button combo in Halo 3.

I'll try to edit more suggestions as time progresses, and I'll add your suggestions to the list if I feel they are logical.

1.Arkham Asylum, 2.Mass Effect, 3.Halo CE, 4.Mass Effect 2, 5.Halo 2, 6.Splinter Cell Double Agent, 7.Gears of War 2, 8.Medievil, 9.Oblivion, 10.Crash Team Racing

Agreed. Halo is "bright alienshooter game", but it could use some realism. Halo1 seemed more realistic and mature than the rest.

- Great amount of, but limited vehicle ammunition. Makes people not able to spam in vehicles, balances the likes of Scorpion and Hornet better.
- Visible grenades, bullets coming out of the weapons, weapons not disappearing when you mount a vehicle.

i like what you are saying particularly with the HUD but the reticule should stay still a spartan really could be in full sprint and hit you in the head with a sniper 200m away

i posted this a while ago

--Spiker--
The only thing that captured how terrifying spikers should be was the Halo Landfall video. i think it would be cool if you could bolt some poor jackal to a wall behind him.

and with energy shields i don't like how the spike still pierces you even with you sheild up and you take no armor damage so here are 2 solotion

1- my favorite have spike ricochet and bounce of energy shields. it would look awesome. and make the Spike do continuous damage if pierced

or

2-Have each spike go directly to Armor damage

--Needler--
i think the needler works just fine for spartan and Elites, or maybe it should go right to armor damage through the shield if it was not enough to explode

but for grunts and jackal and Marines it should be like the second halo wars cut scene where one needle kills--- think about it a needle is a 2 foot long crystal that impales you and then Explodes. one of thous dose not kill i don't what will

--Tracers--
I would like to see the UNMC tracers light up 20 yards from the berral of the Gun EX AR, BR, turret, and Sniper. also with the tracers i would like to see sparks fly of shields, Armor, and Walls

--Plasma--
the only thin that captured how devastating plasma should be was Halo CE and the Book. so when plasma bolts hit Concrete and steal it think it should stick there for a while and let off a lot of sparks and smoke, and be very bright. very similar the light a welder gives off

and as far as it interaction in damage i think it should do continuous seer damage and as far as marines grunts and jackals goes they should be knocked to the groung untill a medic shows up

-semi destroyable structures-
almost everything in the Halo universe is made of better materials than we have to day. how ever i would like to be able to driver trough walls with a warthog, and blow holes out with the rocket launcher. but the structure remains sturdy

--Bullet Holes--
I would like to see bullets be able to penetrate weak materials. like thin metal and thin concrete. i find it annoying when a peace of 1/4 inch rust sheet iron save someone from a future equivalent of a berret fifty

--AI Reactions to damage--
did any one notice in Halo CE and Halo 2 when an Elites shield was down and you continued to shoot him, he could barely shoot and, he would get knocked around like being shoot heart like hell, un like halo 3 when you dropped a brutes armor he just spreads his arms and runs at you like he forgot he was being shot

--Bullets that come out of the gun--
i know it's a small problem but with the new engine i would like to see bullets that actually come out of the guns

I actually didn't mind this reaction with Brutes. In the books, it takes John a VERY long time to kill his first Brute and he almost looses. The book makes it very clear that once a Brute goes berserk, they really don't even flinch when they get shot...it's a fight of flight instinct that's amped way up. Elites are very resilient too but they still don't compare to the Brutes when it comes to raw power and toughness.

As far as your suggestions about destroyable environments...yes, that would all be ridiculously awesome but, realistically, the 360 couldn't handle physics like that. It's a powerful console but it's not a little Jesus in a box. Anyway, the bouncing HUD stuff is really good. That's one of the reasons that I LOVE to Metroid Prime games so much is because the HUD is actually the inside of the helmet and it bounces around when you run, jump, or fall/land hard. It also gets all static-filled and your sound crackles out when you get hit by an electric weapon.

1- in that case i would like to see the Halo 2 brutes, because when thay raged they would pin against a wall or something and PUNCH OUT ALL YOUR BLOOD.

2- I'm not saying gun shots should be devastating to brutes. i just don't like how a brute is just fine until the invisible health bar goes away and he dose a back flip.

I agree with all these ideas except the idea of Spartans running 30mph idea. Spartans run fairly fast as it is. A normal marine runs say about the same speed as a normal modern day soilder. A Spartan runs about 2x as fast, give or take.

Other wise I like all the ideas.

More ideas I think might make this game more realistic is, instead of health point system bungie has now, how about a hit placement. So, if you get hit in the head, with no sheilds your pretty much dead. Get hit in the leg with no sheilds, you don't die, but you walk/run slower. Arm; it is alot harder to aim.

Also, maybe a cover system where you tap the right bumper and you go into cover ( Sort of like how GRAW has it ) you can lean crouch, then maybe hold A and you leap over the wall. ( That is it is not to big )

Then, how about 1st person view from every vechical? The Scorpian would have like a camera view from where the barrel is, so it would look darker and maybe a bit greener like a videa camera would look? Same would apply to the Wraith and Shee, just more covenant looking. The Hornet would be from the Cockpit, then maybe use the D-Pad to move your head to look around? The turrets on all the vechicals would also be first person.

I thik the cover sysetm would be better suited for ODST, in halo as it despite no cover system cover is used quit a bit. whene playing as a spartan the premise is to keep moving.

as far as fist person vehicles goes. i would lie that as an option. it is a bit of a disadvantage but it is really that awesome

and the Heath system i like however; i would also like it like halo CE. when you shield was down in that game you were F--ked
4-3 bullets from an AR would kill you

Rawr Im a dino!

I think one thing that makes it seem cartonny is the marines. They need to be more bad ass and serious. They need to act like they know there gonna die. They need to have fear and anger.

I would also like to see some more actions with marines and covies. Like in the believe trailer a marine is being taken by two jackals searched then killed.

why are u reading this this is private go back to your house!!

drink beer!
drink ale
all hail to the ale

yea i agree but what about

when a genade explodes near you mud and grit covers your visor.

after firing your gun smoke comes out the nozzle

better pyro graphics

better weather effects (rain gets on your visor)

(multiplayer) when you get shot you flinch and wiggle i mean if you were being shot you wouldnt stand still in real life

  • 10.18.2009 1:58 PM PDT

I agree wholeheartedly. Here are some things I noticed, and despise from the later Halos, (2 and 3).

A spartan, lets take the Chief, has shields. I understand that one sniper shot will strip these shields, and that a head or body shot would kill said spartan. But a shot, that has ricochet off of a wall, and hit him in the leg should NOT be a kill shot. Hell, any shot to the extremities should not be nearly as lethal as a shot to the torso of head.

The BR. I know what you may think, "heres another n00b -blam!-ing about the BR" but wait. It takes a large burst of energy to drop the Mk VI's shields, such as an overcharged plasma bolt, or continuous plasma hits, not 12 hits from a 9.5x40mm round. So Bungie, please, tweak the shields, or do away with them.

Lastly, and I've seen that quite a lot of Halo players would like to see this implemented, Prone Position, which would add a hope new element to gameplay.

I suppose that all for now.

I actually find all these to be very good ideas, I feel that w/ uncharted 2's Machinima mode though that Bungie ought to better the theater mode options.

  • 10.18.2009 2:21 PM PDT

It's hard to reach that perfect mark between reality and fun. Gameplay is very important, if they throw it away to make the game more realistic then there is something wrong, but as far as making the environments and such behave more realistically, I agree.

I believe Bungie might pull of something great.

Let's not get TOO realistic here.

Like, someone said, if you get shot in the leg, you walk slower...

No.

Because, the leg is armored with some really strong METAL, with a several layers of gel underneath. That would definitely take a bullet...or 20.

This is true, the Mark 6 and 5 armor should be able to take a few bullets, but it won't protect you forever... But once the bullet got through the armor, and hit the leg, you would realistly be forced to limped. Even with biofoam, it would be hard to walk. Biofoam closes up the wound, but does not take the bullet out.
