Subject: To all of you who think the Combat Knife wouldn't work

1.) If you believe the Combat Knife would not work out in Halo because a knife couldn't penetrate shields then think of this. You are able to knock someone's shields down with one bash with the butt of your gun. How would a sharped metal knife not give more damage? You also have to understand that you'll be playing as Spartans again and and Spartans have much more strength than any other human.

2.) Also, you all remember how everyone thought that when ODST came out you shouldn't be able to break off a turret when it's mounted? Well, Bungie most likely just put that in there for gameplay reasons. So Bungie could put the Combat Knife in there for gameplay reasons, too.

3.) Adding on to that, to not make the Combat Knife just a Human Energy Sword, a normal melee could take 4 hits while a Combat Knife takes 2 hits (still the Energy Sword would be a one-hit-kill). It's like an Energy Sword with less damage but infinite ammo (but so is melee but a Combat Knife would do more damage than melee).

4.) I'm not sure where I stand on the subject of lunge. Maybe not as much lunge as the Energy Sword, but about as much as the Gravity Hammer is currently.

5.) If you think the Combat Knife won't be in the game period, then look at the picture above. Do you think Bungie would make that Spartan up there hold a Combat Knife to just lead us in a totally wrong direction? Bungie is sneaky, not mean.

6.) As Flurriedog had stated, maybe you could control where you lunge. If you don't hit the unarmored areas then you won't do as much damage.

That's all I have right now. I'll update when more thoughts come to me.

Buck had a knife in ODST but it wasn't useable. And also I don't think normal melee kills should take 4 hits.

well I don't think should be able to use your butt stock to kill a spartan. seriously the fail point is going to be the little plastic BR not the half ton space marine. so with an acceptation to covi weapons. all melees should be like the plasma pistols

as far as the knife goes maybe if there was a different button. in campaign the melee is more for knocking an elite back so you could shoot him. well at least in halo CE and 2

Bungie probably didn't let us use the Combat Knife as Buck because he would've been the number one used character in the game because of that feature. And in Halo 2 most weapons took 4 hits to kill a fully shielded Spartan/ Elite (all weapons except for Human and Covenant Rocket Launchers, Brute shot, and Energy Sword). Bungie could just revert back to that to make the Combat Knife more useful.

It took at least 5 stabs... to the neck, for Buck to kill a Brute, to Elites and Brutes, our combat knives are just tooth picks.

For all you know that knife could be a carrot or cheese stick.

I'd also like to point out that that may just be part of the story. For example.

Sgt. Forge had a combat knife in Halo Wars, but he only really used it in a cutscene, gameplay wise it does nothing.

Gunny Buck had a combat knife, used it to stab a brute chieftain, but gameplay wise it was never used.

Get real buddy, Spartans were trained to kill efficiently, the combat knife is just for emergency close quarters situations when you are disarmed.

Brutes had thicker skins than most Covenant and it was a raging Brute Chieftan. Also, on that last part, gameplay reasons. You're not a real Spartan so you can go around stabbing people if you feel like it.

Is Fred the Spartan with the knife?

I hunt for the Prophet of Contentment, the San 'Shyumm that murdered my son, and stole his birthright, his Energy Sword. They call our species Heretics. They claim to all that our tongues sting, our words a vile poison that feeds on the unworthy. I have seen the true face of Heresy. The head of a gallant warrior lay on the ground. His neck scorched and blistered, scarred by his own blade. I shall retrieve the weapon, and drive it through that bastard's heart! Punishment for his sins is nigh.

5: It's a Mechete 1st thing.

Also, It should be a thing you pick up, that then gets used EVERY TIME YOU MELEE. So it would just be a Melee damage booster and that would be it.

I think you don't fully understand the idea of shields. They are designed to deflect high speed projectiles, so a combat knife would pass beyond the barrier, into the target. Other than that, a combat knife in the sense that Call of Duty has would be pretty cool. Being an entire weapon seems kind of cheesy.

Maybe they had 2K and the unadvanced ones were 1K, and the advanced one's were like 1200K. JK.

And plus there's stuff the hurt spartans that are not even supposed to hurt spartans in Halo.

The main thing you need to consider is the purpose of a knife. the point is that it can cut through softer things, like flesh. however, a steel knife against an unknown metal or shielding would be useless. the only reason buck used it is because Romeo had already knocked out it's shields, and he found a weak point, ie the neck.

Well the weak point is the black part of the armor, the neck takes 1 hit in multiplayer, other black parts take 6 hits.

Well the weak point is the black part of the armor, the neck takes 1 hit in multiplayer, other black parts take 6 hits. while true, with in-game animations, you just swing and it does the same damage, unless an assassination, so you would not be able to control hitting the black parts.

  • 10.18.2009 5:16 PM PDT

also the brute weapons have blades on the and buck stabs a brute in the neck but only in a cutscene

Yeah but there is a slight difference between a 2-3 in knife, and a two-foot blade attached to a massive gun. The biggest question to consider is which you would rather have in the middle of a massive battle.

Well Let's Do It

remeber kids that ODST cutscence where Buck stabs that Brute and Brute would die seconds later ( if they would not push him down)

Online ID: GriffGraff15

they could just let you melee with the knife with small arms weapons and if you are a Spartan, not with Rockets, Spartan Laser, other large weapons.

They could give the Elites some kind of small blade so that they have a cool melee too
