Note: I am not going to discuss flag bouncing/running in this thread. If you want to talk about that, use the other thread.

In my opinion, Capture the Flag (CTF) in Halo 3 is nowhere as fun as it was in Halo 1 & 2. So, I'm going to make a list of sorts as to what should be included for CTF in Reach.

Neutral Flag
This is a no-brainer. The lack of this in Halo 3 was extremely disappointing. If you don't know what it is, it's basically where two teams fight for a neutral flag, which is usually in the middle of the map, and bring it back to their own base.

Multiple Teams for Neutral Flag
I loved this in Halo 2, especially for Multi-Team. It's exactly like what the name says, more than two teams for Neutral Flag. Of course, we're going to need more maps like Foundation in order to accommodate this.

Touch Return
I don't know why this isn't in Halo 3, this is an essential component of CTF Classic. Well, we do have something like it in Halo 3, instant return. Except that you don't need to touch the flag to return, you just have to be in the general vicinity. Reach should have Touch Return, where you have to touch the flag to return it.

Full Vehicle use with the Flag option
This was in Halo 1 by default, and it became an option n Halo 2. Basically, with this on, you can drive with the flag or even use a turret with it. This option is in Halo 3, but it's glitched.

Basically, the option should be in Reach, but this time, it should work. With this option, and touch return, a true CTF Classic gametype can exist.

A "Flag Weight" option
In Halo 1 & 2, if you let go of the flag, it actually shot out a bit in front of you. I call this "Flag Tossing". You can't do this in Halo 3, at least not nearly as much.

I suggest having a "Flag Weight" option. The less the flag weighs, the farther you can toss it. The more it weighs, and you get the idea.

Also, Multi-team Multi-flag should come back as well. They should allow up to 8 teams for all multi-team flag variants (As Halo 2 only allowed 4 teams)

Another suggestion is flag-drop settings. It would be able to effect all base player traits immediately after the drop (like the Custom Powerup traits.)

For instance, what I think should be default:

Time: 3 seconds.
Movement Speed: 75%

^ What this would mean is that dropping the flag would not make you move faster immediately, rather, you would have 3 seconds of movement at regular Flag moving speed. Flag Running would be pointless.

OR

Time: 10 seconds.
Motion Tracker: Disabled
Weapon Damage: 200%
Gravity: 75%

^ This is more interesting, it would make it so that when you drop the flag, you jump higher, do double damage, and lose your motion tracker for 10 seconds.

GOOD WAY TO PREVENT FLAG RUNNING:

Time: 3 seconds.
Objective Pickup: Disabled

^ This would make it so that when you drop the flag, you will have to wait a full 3 seconds before you are able to pick it up again, this would make Flag Running and Juggling impossible to do alone (It would not be suggested to be done with a team anyway).

Now, these are just what I thought of off the top of my head. There could be a lot more, so if you have any ideas, feel free to post them. I might include more ideas to the OP, either from me or by you guys.

Thoughts?

I agree with everything you said. Good ideas.

I hunt for the Prophet of Contentment, the San 'Shyumm that murdered my son, and stole his birthright, his Energy Sword. They call our species Heretics. They claim to all that our tongues sting, our words a vile poison that feeds on the unworthy. I have seen the true face of Heresy. The head of a gallant warrior lay on the ground. His neck scorched and blistered, scarred by his own blade. I shall retrieve the weapon, and drive it through that bastard's heart! Punishment for his sins is nigh.

I agree with everything except the very last one. I think putting down a flag should do just that, drop it, not toss.

Also, Multi-team Multi-flag should come back as well. They should allow up to 8 teams for all multi-team flag variants (As Halo 2 only allowed 4 teams)

Other than that great thread, I support your post.

Thanks for your support.

As for the last item on the list, I said it should be an option for Custom Games. Default, it should drop straight to the ground.

And I'll add your suggestion to the OP.

Except that you don't need to touch the flag to return, you just have to be in the general vicinity. Reach should have Touch Return, where you have to touch the flag to return it.

You should be able to choose how close to the flag you have to be to start returning it, the closest choice would pretty much be touch return.

Rawr Im a dino!

with the flag weight if it is as heavy as possible would your character also slow down?

  • 10.18.2009 2:28 PM PDT

i agree with everything except touch return and possibly the vehicle use (i never played Halo: CE, so i don't know how it played). My problem with touch return is, what if you are running the flag (with your "tossing" option) and you round a corner and you throw your flag right into an enemy and it gets returned?

All great ideas that I would love to see implemented. Except one. I don't think the flag carrier should be able to operate vehicles. I like the fact that you must work as a team to transport the flag.

ya, if it gets to heavy, ur character might throw out his back and not be able to walk for 2 minutes or until he's killed

Again, it's just an option for custom games. I included this because it was in Halo 1 & 2, but it's glitched in Halo 3, so why not include it in Reach. This option and touch return are the essential components of CTF Classic.

It isn't our shiznit anymore.

I would like to see Multi Team Multi Flag (Multi Team Flag?), where there are at most 4 (if you want to get crazy, 8) flags in the game, each controlled by a team.

The current multi flag system is fun, but with this there would be much more insanity. The cons I see is it could promote a totally defensive game, but that can be solved with useful offensive power weapons.

This could fit into a Multi Big Team Playlist, that is if Bungie keeps the old Halo MM system.

No, that's Player Speed under Flag Carrier options.

I should probably rename "Flag Weight" to something else, to prevent confusion.

I'll come back to this thread when I have a bit more time, but a suggestion I have that is a little more on the silly side would be full 16 player FFA multi flag. Obviously very few people would play this, but I would love a huge map with 16 players going after 16 different flags :P Even more chaotic would be 16 players fighting for a single neutral flag.

I would also like to see some games played where the team has multiple flags to defend. Big team games would be far more enjoyable for me if those 8 players had to defend 2 or 3 flags and break up their defenses to a few separate bases. This could allow for quite a bit of strategic enhancement to the game.

instead of touch return you should have to carry your own flag back to the flag spawn point.

Where is a "javelin" toss the flag option?

I am the hand of fate!

I agree with all of this. Especially the touch return, I have no idea where instant return came from or why it replaced touch return.

  • 10.18.2009 2:43 PM PDT

instead of "flag weight" i think u mean " flag gravity" Just like MC u cant get any height and just fall when u go over the edge.

The Flag touch thing, If u are running flag and go around a corner and throw the flag into an enemy then that is lack of team work and lack of communication.

The flag would create drag, causing the "javelin" to not be as effective. I think its best that we just carry it.

Wherever you roam
so far from home
you'll be safe from peril
life threatening and terrible
if you avoid David Powel
and keep track of your towel.

It's good to have options, and you suggest good options.

I personally like the current CTF except for flag bouncing (which is annoying, I don't consider it cheating or anything though, I just wish it wasn't useful).

It wasn't supposed to be humorous. Flags tend to catch wind, and flap. Its why people put their symbols and emblems on them. This very trait also makes it a poor javelin. It does not fly straight and true.

For neutral flag can't you just do assault on a special forge map with the base plant points mixed up?
