I personally enjoy having ranks but I think both of this could exist.. if not then either/or.
Ill keep this short and simple:
Bungie could keep the ranking system the way it is and people can either get over it, accept it for what it is, or love it.. or all three. Thats easy.. Of course there will be those that complain.. oh well.
However we could try something new here; Halo Trophies.
Halo Trophies
Halo Trophies could only be earned in matchmaking and would serve as accomplishments rather than levels of skilled rank.
Trophies such as:
MVP's (#'s - keeps track)
100+ wins, 200+ wins, etc..
K/D trophies (i.e. obtain a k/d higher than 1, 2..etc..)
15+ headshots in a match
Backpack Trophy - Carry your team to a win with more than 50% of the team's kills
Etc..
Each trophy has a number underneath it to show how many of each trophy you have earned.
These trophies and others like them could serve as sort of "rank trackers" that will determine a players skill but at the same time wont give a visible rank next to their name in matchmaking.
They can serve as a mix between achievements, matchmaking stats, medals, and rank all at the same time. You could have a "Trophy Case" that you could view (in the game as well as here on b.net) with actual Halo Trophies (design under construction). You could view other peoples trophy cases to determine how good of a player they are but you wouldnt have actual number ranks.
Harder-to-earn trophies would be located at the top of the trophy case and easier ones at the bottom.
I think medals should also be displayed this way so that you can view, while in game, how many of each a player has earned.
Ranks could co-exist with this of course if you prefer.
What do you think?
