We just need to instigate more elitism and Mythic shenanigans.
We know that Reach will have multiplayer, and I know that I want there to be at least as many options for custom multiplayer as there are in Halo 3.
What I really want is for Bungie to think ahead when creating forge mode. Originally, for Halo 3, it was just a weapon and objective placement editor, which was nice, but people still did more with it. Then they added foundry, and immovable objects, allowing us to actually create entirely new maps, but we were still limited by the space, we didn't have a regularly shaped box, it took half the budget to block the back off if it was needed. At first we couldn't geomerge either, but eventually people figured out how to do it, and we were able to make much higher quality maps, but we still had to worry about budget and item limits. Then they made sandbox, supposedly the ultimate forge map, but it still doesn't have enough space for the larger maps, and the crypt still has oddly shaped walls. There isn't enough budget for a large sky bubble map, and the way it approximates item locations when it saves makes it hard to keep floors smooth. Also, the default objects are glitchy when you interlock them. The OLN also limits out ability to forge exactly what we want. If they had just made the default sandbox completely empty, we could have the full OLN to work with, rather than having to keep the default items. If they had made one more item, a floor tile, the height of a wall's width, and 4 grid squares by 4, we could make much larger, better sky bubble maps.
Every step has been an improvement, but I think Bungie can do better if they just think ahead, and also consult with the people that use forge. Go to forge cafe, and forge union, and Atlas, and find out from the members what they would like.
I don't care about the golf ball and the tin cup. I don't like having 40 huge wedges, but only 20 large wedges, I would rather have the unique shapes that can be used to make the large shape. I want building blocks, not fins and obelisks. I don't care about the little aesthetic details like the little lightbullbs in the crypt, I would rather have a space that actually works for making maps. I want it to be an exact number of grid squares, and I want all of the objects to be based on the size of one of those squares. I basic objects like triangles of different shapes, and boxes of different dimensions. I want a better variety of lights. I want to be able to select whether or not an object is moveable, and I want to be able to easily merge it with map geometry, other items, and float it. I can use glitches and other techniques to do this, but it would be a lot better if I could just hold down a button and move it through the wall, then let it go. I would also like an undo feature, and the ability to pin an object in place but change its orientation, and the option to freeze its orientation but move its location.
None of these things are unreasonable, and most of them would make it possible to make much much better maps, which would keep us playing, and give the option of using some of those maps in matchmaking, creating a much better experience overall.
Also, even if they do create one ultimate forge map, and it has very few problems, we should still be able to forge other maps. I have had ideas to make a different version of the pit, heretic, standoff, and many others, but everything outside of foundry, sandbox, and avalanche is practically unforgeable, with a few minor exceptions.
A better forge mode benefits everyone, and there is no good reason to neglect one of the major reasons for Halo 3's longevity in the new game.
