Subject: Buck.. Seriously?

Impossible is Nothing.

I'm going to get a lot of flame for this.

I've noticed a lot of fanbase for the character Buck from the ODST Campaign storyline, but I'm still looking for legitimate reasons why. Most people will say, "OOMfg he totaly stabped a brutte in the neck", or "He kissed the girl in da end!" Seriously?

To me, Buck is just a crude Hollywood generalization brought on by the ideas of classic action movies. We have the hero, with the disgustingly cliche parted-hair and lingo, exclaiming, "You know the Music, time to Dance." Are you kidding me?

Bungie did a good job with ODST's storyline, but instead of introducing characters with realistic militant personalities, we get those who prefer to make jokes with an ugly excuse for a heroine, (Dare), who I'm sure was put in to the game since Cortana would not be featured, and fanboys needed something to fap to.

Don't take me wrong, I somewhat enjoyed ODST, I just couldn't help but laugh when Buck came bouncing in with Bungie's ridiculous animation software and preceded to make some sort of stereotypical remark on the situation.

But what does this have to do with Halo: Reach? It is presumed that Buck will make an appearance in the game due to his extensive involvement in the Battle of Reach. I wish to express hope that we will see a very changed Buck, one who doesn't feel the need to crack jokes while all Hell is breaking loose around him. The same way you'd expect a hardened war veteran to react.

Please share your thoughts.

Um... I like Halo? I don't really know what to say. I'm a student at the moment, I hope to become a criminal profiler, and I enjoy pretty much everything as long as it's good.

Nathan--blam!-mothering-Fillion. Also humor is a way to deal with stress which only makes Buck even more realistic. This is still kind of the wrong forum.

Fixed. Still think its the wrong forum. You remind me alot of what DigitalPh33r said. Some dude posted something like that on the ODST forum and got banned for it. That was a good day.

So did I. Had the kind of personality that kind-of suited his job.

93% of statistics are lies. Formerly Xfire Grunt. Unfortunately, you can't change the WLID for your BNET account, so I had to create an alternate account. My other WLID was spam city (and it was my e-mail account too).

Nathan Fillion is ok...but any actor is only as good as his lines.

Well, this IS a Halo game, and during fighting, there will be some funny stuff. This is Bungie's way of making games, not too serious. And the fact that Captain Hammer is playing as Buck is just -blam!-ing awesome.

The ODST's are lame. They're not as serious as they should be. They're nothing like the real Helljumpers of the 105th.

I mean I get sarcasm and a bit of humour but Buck was a pansy.

I thought the same thing, These guys are getting shot at with plasma morters and blown away and they get up and say "Son of a gun"? What the hell is that. Halo has always had lines like that but they were more out in the open this time. Its hard to take the game seriously when they are joking about how they amost got their head riped from their spine by a brute...

I suppose I've been spoiled in a way by the book series. Plain text on paper allows you to interpret dialogue and actions in a completely different way than Bungie may have meant for them to be seen. I saw the story as being grim and dramatic, the story of a losing war fought by protectors of an endangered planet.

But that's just me. I respect the fact that the community is made up of so many opinions, makes me realize how Bungie affected the mind's of its fans.

I feel the same way. Halo CE was like this. It felt a lot more serious. Don't get me wrong Bungie does a great job, I'm just saying I kind of like the books better in terms of the story.

It technically is that kind of story, but it's not that serious. As I said before, it's Bungie's way, and apparently a lot of people like it.

Sorry, forgot that when some people saw this lapse of open mindedness they lost their hardness for Buck and had to stop ogling at screenshots of his amazing combover.

Bring some actual material to discuss next time?

Congratulations, you just made your entire argument invalid and the rest of your post obsolete.

And believe it or not, there are plenty of people in the military who act like Buck.

Yeah, the ones who sit behind comfortable desks and haven't seen a planet being glassed or watch their own friends being vaporized. Catch my drift? I'm not trying to feed the flame here..

And I only mentioned Dare to point out that Bungie feels the need to add a female love-interest to games that don't necessarily require them.

I agree, I want to see a more serious Halo. Halo: Reach needs to be at least as serious as Halo 1 was.

One of Bungie's objectives with ODST was to add a more human feel to the Halo series. Romance is a pretty easy way to secure a more human feel.

It does not require it, no. Halo has NEVER been about romance (sorry for those who believe Chief loves Cortana).

You know Johnson? He's seen twice the crap Buck has, and he's still got the same attitude. And you know what? It makes him seem human. Because, if he doesn't joke, he'll go insane.

And honestly, I got enough of the serious protagonist with the Chief.

Yup. It was such an ominous feeling to escape the Pillar of Autumn while Marines were being slaughtered as you ran, watching escape pods being destroyed before they launch..

You know what I mean? It really captured the effect of this conflict.
