You thought you lagged, it took jesus three days to respawn, and even then he commit suicide

I'm going to get a lot of flame for this.

I've noticed a lot of fanbase for the character Buck from the ODST Campaign storyline, but I'm still looking for legitimate reasons why. Most people will say, "OOMfg he totaly stabped a brutte in the neck", or "He kissed the girl in da end!" Seriously?

To me, Buck is just a crude Hollywood generalization brought on by the ideas of classic action movies. We have the hero, with the disgustingly cliche parted-hair and lingo, exclaiming, "You know the Music, time to Dance." Are you kidding me?

Bungie did a good job with ODST's storyline, but instead of introducing characters with realistic militant personalities, we get those who prefer to make jokes with an ugly excuse for a heroine, (Dare), who I'm sure was put in to the game since Cortana would not be featured, and fanboys needed something to fap to.

Don't take me wrong, I somewhat enjoyed ODST, I just couldn't help but laugh when Buck came bouncing in with Bungie's ridiculous animation software and preceded to make some sort of stereotypical remark on the situation.

But what does this have to do with Halo: Reach? It is presumed that Buck will make an appearance in the game due to his extensive involvement in the Battle of Reach. I wish to express hope that we will see a very changed Buck, one who doesn't feel the need to crack jokes while all Hell is breaking loose around him. The same way you'd expect a hardened war veteran to react.

Please share your thoughts.

now i ain't a HUGE buck fan but what i think after seeing billions of people die and a planet being half destroyed would make him angry so making jokes would relive stress.

LOL some people got angry with this topic. Anyways I wouldn't mind any character being in it or how they act there's always another type of character with different personalities. All I care about is the storyline and the high action scenes. It is good to here a character in a game that says something weird/odd makes you go WTF and have a laugh.

The ODST's are lame. They're not as serious as they should be. They're nothing like the real Helljumpers of the 105th.

I mean I get sarcasm and a bit of humour but Buck was a pansy.

I thought the same thing, These guys are getting shot at with plasma morters and blown away and they get up and say "Son of a gun"? What the hell is that. Halo has always had lines like that but they were more out in the open this time. Its hard to take the game seriously when they are joking about how they amost got their head riped from their spine by a brute...

since my first day of playing Halo CE I have loved the comic relief situations like "Get up so I can kill you again" up to ODST's "Sorry I can't hear you with my BULLET IN YOUR MOUTH" (sgt. Johnson).
HOWEVER, i have to agree that the lines other ODST's had throughout this game were not giving them the bad a** marine attitude i expected.
I still enjoyed the game and all the new features they had though

Why can't we put Bungie Cards here?

I wouldn't say Dare is ugly. If that is your idea of ugly you must be a gay

  • 10.19.2009 3:16 AM PDT

Yeah don't blame nathan... Bungie was the one with the UN-original thought of saying "Just be the guy on firefly". Same with Dutch but they added a lil religion in his character.

*Think Before Ya Blink*

If you think you've got lag just think how jesus felt, it took him three days to respawn.

some people make jokes in a bad situation to make them selves feel better and try to make the situation better by boosting moral and confidence.

Because aliens.

Phew, Buck is the only guy I didn't like in ODST. What's so awesome with him?

The Mythic Threads (Halo 3) (ODST) (Reach)

IF he actually shows up, I think he'll be more of a hard-ass rather than a soft joker.

  • 10.19.2009 6:55 AM PDT

I thought all the ODSTs were fleshed out badly, bar, ironically, the Rookie. His silence and 'gets the job done without complaining' attitude is what I thought a real ODST would be like.

But Buck said "Bam!, said the lady!"

  • 10.19.2009 7:05 AM PDT

I agree with you.
i dislike the character Buck a lot.

  • 10.19.2009 7:09 AM PDT

I agree, all the characters from ODLC were cliche and lame, except Rookie, Buck?! You got to be kidding me, he is horrible charactera, hope he is not in Reach, dont want to be reminded of a horrible character & horrible game, even if he is in Reach game, then just a small cameo thats all.

  • 10.19.2009 8:07 AM PDT

I concur with most of what the OP has to say. The one Marine who has any right to be joking about anything (because of all the crap he went thru) is Sgt. Johnson. His jokes are actually funny!
(Read Halo: First Strike, after reading Halo: The Fall of Reach)

All I gotta say is:

"That doesn't even look like an 'Uneven Elephant', more like two squids kissing."

  • 10.19.2009 8:29 AM PDT

buck was weird especily his line at the last level "if you ever fall for a girl make sure she has balls" wich i thought was a little odd but every one laughed when he said it. in my opionion i think that duch and micky are the best done charter cause every group has thouse 2 pepole in evey group. duch being the quieter nicer strong guy. mickey being the slower more joking entertaind easly by explosions (me with my friends).

I think they made buck stereotypical on purpose because they wanted us to think of all the war movies. It makes the halo war seem more realistic in a way we can relate to. (movies)

  • 10.19.2009 8:48 AM PDT

impossible is just a word

I agree i a way to the buck is to happy and jokey thing
he needed to be really hardpressed this is how the characters should be in my view
Buck(first he should be higher than a gunnery sergant)Hard pressed soilder who dosent take -blam!- but would die for anyone of his squad

Romeo Still the same but less of a DOUCEYBAG (like on NMPD HQ
when he says hey im not dead or something he should of said some kind of snappy line)

Dutch More rough but conciderate more brutal less perky (just by a bit though)

Micky Smarter he is ment to be quite smart but it dosent seem like that in ODST he seem to have the same intellagence the other ODST he should also be a bit more navie (i think if spelt that right) towards the covernant war machine seeing as he hasnt seen a planet get glassed

ROOKIE (firstly isnt he a lance corpral which is higger then most members of his sqaud) if bungie really want him to be you
what should happen is at the start of the game (if you have a head set) it should say please say this line "Hello my name is (insert name) i like (insert thing) then i find out the pitch of your voice accent and stuff and then in game it says an auto mated script with your voice like "on my last mag" or in a cutscene "im fine just seal me up with some bio foam"

Dare She should of actually been CABOOSE you find this out after Buck kisses HER so ROCL Rool on ceiling laughing is at 99% of it bungie happiness requiement that 1 being Nathan Fillion and Nathan major fan boys who are like DAM YOU CHURCH YOU DID THIS

I Agree also that only Johnson should say funny crap and that bit at the end when buck says I you ever find a women make shes got balls if i had of been the rookie i would of said "Oh so i was right she is a man" LOL

I agree. There's nothing less immersive than fighting some aliens, and having an NPC shout something ridiculous.

Save the funny stuff for the IWHBYD skull - make the actual campaign somewhat serious.

Agreed. A temporary effect that makes gameplay a little more interesting is fine by me. It's just the constant bad jokes and unnecessary dialogue that can get on your nerves.

When I bought the game, I expected every character to have this attitude. Instead it was the main character being horribly overshadowed by the hyper-colorful personalities of the rest of the team.

I like him from firefly. Its the exact same character as Mal.

And is that why you like him in ODST? Or do you think he played a good character in ODST too?

  • 10.19.2009 3:33 PM PDT

If I were in anyone's shoes and the human race was losing a war big time, I would probably have to make jokes to stop me from killing myself.
