-- -- Weather Effects in Studio Produced Maps -- --

I know many people want weather effects added to forge. That would be nice.. But even more than that, I'd like to see the new MM maps have changing weather effects.

For example:

Say Avalanche was a Halo: Reach multiplayer map. Over the course of the game's time, the weather could progressively change from less extreme to more extreme or vice versa. At the start of the game there would be snow on the ground but the sun would be shining. As time progressed you would see light snow showers starting to fall and a few minutes after you may see heavier snowfall. This would reduce visibility and effect gameplay pretty drastically. It could also cause vehicles to move slower (trudging through snow). Other effects could apply.

Now I know people wouldn't necessarily enjoy losing visibility, moving slower, etc.. but it could work in your favor in objective games, or against you. It would have to be random or otherwise people would know exactly when the heavier snow fall would start and when it would clear.

Thats just a snow example. For some reason, Longshore looks like it needs a light drizzle occasionally.

-- Time of Day of Match --

Each game started on a particular map could have a time of day you start the match with listed in the pre-game lobby. The time of day would obviously effect the amount of sunlight/moonlight the map experiences.

For example:

Gametype: Slayer
Map: Avalanche
Time of Day: Midnight

Possible effects:

-- Discussed -- Bullet shifting should probably not occur, unless it was only very slight and for a very brief period of time. --

Wind - Causes bullet shifting
- Possible debris? - visibility, cause slight damage
Rain - Bullet shifting, visibility, traction
- Thunder/Lightning?
Snow - Bullet shifting, visibility, speed
- Falling avalanche?
Sleet - Would probably have to be a starting effect (maybe only certain areas) - Traction
Sand - Visibility, speed (with wind)
Sunshine - Games at around noon have more glare, shadows - Visibility
- Games between 6am - 7pm
Moonlight - Glare in certain places, shadows - Visibility
- Games after 7pm

Certain combinations of above.

-- -- -- It would be cool to start a match sunny with a light drizzle, and progressively get dark outside with heavier rainfall and wind. -- -- --

Im sure no engine could handle all of this... Just a thought.

OK LISTEN -- READ -- THIS PLEASE FOR THE LOVE OF GOD

Ok I think you guys are missing what I was going for here with the Time of Day feature. What Im suggesting is a random time generator for each match. Not at all based on what time it really is outside.. For instance:

Say its a 2v2 Slayer match:

Red Team:
Player 1: xXx iTz Da 4Shot Kyng xXx - Location: USA
Player 2: AussieGamerBall3r - Location: Australia
(2 completely different time zones, days.. etc)

Blue Team:
Player 1: TsingTao'nRice - Location: Japan
Player 2: BResmuymal - Location: Mexico
(Again 2 different time zones..)

So with all 4 players we could have 4 different time zones. This has NOTHING to do with what "time" the match will start on.

The pregame lobby:

Team Doubles
GT: Slayer
Map: BG Remake (see what I did there?) :D
Time of Day: 7:30 PM (This is randomly generated and could be a completely different time next time you play the map)

So.. the time of day (IN THE MATCH - IN THE GAME - IN THE FAKE REALITY - NOT IN REAL LIFE) is 7:30.. So, that means the sun would be setting and over the course of the 15 min game it would eventually get dark the longer the match lasts.

UPDATED HERE

The Pregame Match Settings would look like this:

Ex:

Gametype: 1-Flag CTF
Map: Valhalla
Time of Day: 4:00 AM
Starting Weather: Light Rain, Overcast
Weather Changes: Gradual

So the game would start in the dark (4 am), with light rain, and would gradually get lighter outside with the rain either slowing down or getting heavier. Randomly generated.

Nice idea i would love to see this in reach

I agree. This could completly change up gameplay... in a good way, that is.

  • 10.19.2009 3:09 PM PDT

thats awsome but that might be pushing it

  • 10.19.2009 3:09 PM PDT

liek omg u guyz...

omg ponies (ok ya it aint that bad imo)

GRRR IM RIGHT UR WRONG AND GHEY LOLOLOL UR GHEY

lova ya internet, never change :D

Would be good enough if we just got the ability to change time of day for a forge map (which is possible, Halo custom edition maps, well some of them, can be changed between day and night while playing).

I dont think you should manually be able to change the weather or time of day while playing the map, but you could set it up in customs before the match starts how you want the weather to play out.

For example:

You could set up a customs game, get your map ready and set a time of day. Say, 8:00 pm. So the match starts at night and will progressively get darker over the course of the game. you could also set the weather before you start. Whatever setting you start the whether on it could progressively move to the other extreme during the course of the game.

I.e. You set it to start with heavy rain. Over the 15 min game time it will gradually get lighter and lighter until it stops raining and the sun comes out. You could also have the option to have no change in weather that way if you wanted it to rain heavily over the course of the entire match, it would.

You could also combine several of these effects at the same time.

i.e. rain + night time + wind etc..

okay, whatevs. i dislike anything that involves disrupting gameplay though, so im glad that you kept it to a minimum. there should be lights to light it up at night, and the wind should have no effect on bullets.

Yeah, Ive said multiple times that bullet shifting is a bad idea. Multiple times. And of course, lights would either have to come on at night or the moonlight would have to be significant enough to not change gameplay too much.

yea, i'll be fine with that then. more costomibliity (spelling FAIL) is good but as long as gameplay is not interrupted.

Well what about the other effects?

Ice, heavy snow, debris in wind, etc..

He who runs, dies last. I suggest you run.

I want this. But I think the weather and time of day should affect the gameplay

Should or shouldnt? Because I listed ways that they should in my OP.

  • 10.19.2009 4:52 PM PDT

It would probably work better if it didnt directly affect gameplay... people would complain. But visibility would have to change for heavy rain, snow, debris in wind. It just wouldnt affect your bullets.

I am of an open mind and I am willing to hear criticism. Also: That's stupid and you're stupid.

I support this idea.

We need something along the lines of what FarCry did with their map editor. Weather changes, environment changes, the whole package!

if Reach uses a realtime lighting model for direct lighting (the model explained in the Siggraph publication is VERY advanced), time of day and dynamic weather is very possible.

We'll see. We should expect a lot from this engine, but like Halo 3, expect the engine to have limitations. Don't expect too much.

EDIT: Woah, upon further analysis, some of the stuff you mention is pretty damn ambitious. Dynamic wind for one, is exceptionally difficult to integrate, especially in a space where sixteen players are blowing eachother up. The weather having a non-changing wind that affects simpler things such as effects would be a much simple solution and in the end a much more efficient and functional solution.

If weather changes occur, they need to have some sort of effect on the player models and gun models.

If it snows, I want a snow covered or like icy covered gun and the ability to make snowmen out of players if they crouch for too long and sit still.

This would be cool in custom games. I don't know for sure if it would be popular in Matchmaking. Although i would love it, i think people would get angry when their visibility is drastically reduced.

Yeah but it would make it more exciting.. people would pop up out of nowhere in the snow. If not popular, have it only slightly reduce vision.
