tl;dr version - changing weather in reach would be cool

  • 10.20.2009 10:37 PM PDT

Ive wanted a weather system like this since halo 2 so I support this.

  • 10.20.2009 10:59 PM PDT

Do any programmers here know how weather would effect gameplay?

i.e. would heavy rain/snowfall cause a slower (laggy) game?

  • 10.21.2009 7:32 AM PDT

I would live time of day and weather effects as long as they can be totally customised in customs and we get the campaign flashlight in multiplayer - that would add something to night maps, do I turn the flashlight on but reveal my position, or play it stealthily but run the risk of falling of a cliff?

What about the VISR? I know its only for ODST's but if I said "nightvision" I would get flamed out of the forum for being a CoD fanboy.

This needs to be explored. Programmers out there...?

I love the look of some of those pouring rain maps. That would be so cool pouring rain in the dead of night... all you see is the little lights on your armor/tracer/plasma going off. It could be a thunderstorm and the lightning would strike once in a while and light everything up.

You are my hero Homeboyd. So many good ideas from you! :P

These things would be soo intensive on the system if they had physical effects. IT gets me excited just thinking about it, even if it were just a visual difference. (Imagine water droplets splashing on your visor, flakes melting, or mud splatter)

Exactly

still waiting to hear from someone out there that knows if this can be done..?

Employees.. Im sure you arent allowed to post in this forum for fear that you might give something away, but is this even possible.. lets say for Halo 3 as it is?

Corn, Oil, and Wine... We need more wine...

No engine could handle weather and tint changes psh... Look at The newer Pokemon games...

1. Changing weather effects seem possible, as they did a changing effect with the map on Isolation.

2. I do not like the idea of wind/rain/etc shifting bullets. Yes, it does it in real life, but it sucks in videogames. Randomization is not something Halo needs any more of.

3. However, Halo could use some more skill requirements. I like the idea of bullets being affected, but they should be affected at a constant rate so you can compensate consistently. The rate we call gravity is consistent (at least here on Earth), and even if it weren't, it could be made consistent. I've always liked having to lead shots at distances, and I think compensating for gravity would be awesome too.

4. For custom games changing weather would be great, but for MP it seems like it could cause too many lag issues. Just look at how they don't have flame grenades on maps, and you want lightning? It would be awesome, but I wouldn't sacrifice playability for graphics.

Thanks for the feedback.

A) I dont think there should be bullet shifting at all. It wass just an idea to give examples of what Im talking about.

B) What if you could start on any given map, at any time of day/night, with any type of terrain that stayed constant?

For instance:

You start on Blackout at night and its snowing. Light snow, so it doesnt effect vision TOO much, but snowing nonetheless. I would enjoy gradual weather changes, so that it either snows less (visibility increased) or snow more (visibilty decreased).. But the terrain could always be constant once the game started. So for this case the terrain could be snow. It wouldnt be constantly changing (melting, piling up) however. Or you could start Blackout with a mossy, or clean terrain. Those wouldnt change, just the weather effects. (if possible)

I think it would take up a bunch of memory, but I really have no clue how much. It might be doable, but I don't know. Madden football does that type of stuff, but I don't know how it would work for MP.

I mean it would take up too much active memory. For instance, if you're playing on LIVE and the system has so much active info, it could mess up your connection, whether playing MP or co-op. It's just a lot of stuff running, and all that extra information can clog things up. Like I said, that's why they don't have too many flamethrowers and no flame nades in online MP.

That being said, I don't know how downloading a disc to the hard drive could affect this, but I'm pretty sure it wouldn't really help. You'd still have to send your info, and others would send their info packets to each other, each with tons of memory.

Well youve got me on the discussion of memory space and active memory or whatever because I dont know what the disc and xbox 360's hard drives capabilities and limitations are, so Im glad youre having this discussion with me. Are there not games out there that have weather effects in them at this point?

Lightning, thunder, rain, snow, wind, sand storms, etc..? I know there are. Bungie just hasnt figured out how to implement them into their game in a LIVE match so that it wouldnt be too much for the servers or hard drive to handle.

I think most of those are in campaign as opposed to multiplayer. Madden has weather effects, but I'm not sure if they do those online or not. Even if they did, it's a top down view and isn't as graphics heavy as Halo is. Also, I don't know how the information is sent on that game (is it like Halo's MP, co-op, or what?).

I'm xAssault12x, and I love the Halo Universe. Discussion please!

I've allways wanted to play Halo in a Blizard, Hurricane, or Sand Storm. Sounds fun if it can be pulled off. The best way to make it work would be to have the weather only effect people, vehicles, and visibility.

For Example:

High wind picks up accross the map. Running into the wind is hard, but running with it will give you a speed boost. Jumping into the air would get you blown the direction of the wind.

A true Blizard is a virtual white out. Visibility would be like 10 to 20 feet. Now long range weapons are almost useless. Close range is where it is at. Also, you can now sneak around maps very easily too. It now becomes important to defend your base by having people in the base.

Hard rain at night would make for an interesting match. You can still see across the map but it is harder to make out figures and get clear shots. Rain masks sounds and makes the ground a bit slipy for vehicles and people.

You start a match in the tail end of a Blizard. Snow is everywhere when the Blizard stops piles of snow have changed the map. The sun comes out and begins to melt the snow. The snow turns into slush that is extremely slippery. Jumping into a slush filled area would be a disaster for a player because they would hit it and just stide.
