Subject: Change of Terrain Option

Ok after seeing this thread I figured we could make a change to already made maps that shouldnt be too difficult.

Each map could have different variants.

For example:

Grassbound - Snowbound with grass terrain
Snowtrap - Sandtrap with snow
Leaky Isolation - Isolation with water puddles/rain

It would be a sub-option you could select when picking a map in customs:

Valhalla
Terrain Type: Rain/water, sun, dark, grassy, sandy, snowy, etc..

This way you could play in Matchmaking and even if you get the same map 5 times in a row, they could be different variants of the map so it doesnt seem so repetitive and stale. The only original part of this idea is the option to be able to change the terrains in pre-game lobby and having multiple versions of each map in MM instead of one version cycling through 100's of times.

The linked thread above deserves the credit for sparking the idea.

Like I've said before, changing the time of day is withing the realm of possibility with realtime lighting, but palletizing maps for different weather sets is INCREDIBLY painstaking work. It's not as simple as just changing specularity and re-working the textures either. You have to change certain foliage, placement of decorators, etc.

Seriously people, some of these ideas we're coming up with, while cool sounding on paper, are just WAY too ambitious and we're really asking to be let down at this point.

Yeah but half of the things they do in these games I wouldve never imagined possible. And yet, they continue to amaze.

Either way.. its fun to discuss. Right?

How to spell "space"?

S-P-ACE! SPACE!

Weather effects would double the fun factor of the map.

Agreed

Is it possible to create several terrain options for maps made easily enough to cycle through with the press of a button or is there a huge coding process involved?
