Introduction - Watchdog in the Night
Chela looked up at the darkening sky. He shivered because of the cold this planet brought in the night. Reach. What an odd name for a planet. Chela imagined Reaching up towards the stars. Reach. Was that what they thought of when they named this planet? Reaching towards the stars unknown? Chela shivered again as he looked at the thermometer he built into his foxhole. 22 Fahrenheit, the cold was beginning to become unbearable. Chela wanted to give a shout to the next foxhole over. At least Venom had Clark to keep him company over there. Here it was nothing but sit watch a black tree line, waiting for an enemy that nobody knows anything about, and would probably never show up to this god forsaken base. After another hour passed, Chela heard a snap. He heard Venom and Clark move in the foxhole next to him. They must have heard it too. Another snap, and voices this time. But not in a language that he could understand. The voices were deep and low. Chela thought about radioing in to base. That was after all his job. Picket lines hadn't been used for ages. but there hadn't been a war in ages either. Chela heard the soft static of the radio. Clark had just radioed in. Something was out there.
Chapter 1 - Bloodhounds and Banshees
Moments after Clark radioed in, Chela heard the first shot. It didnt sound like a rifle, or at least nothing that Chela had ever heard go off. More shots. This time in rapid succession. Blue plasma streaked over Chela's head. He heard a scream. Clark yelled,
"Get to the Hog!"
Chela scrambled out of his foxhole running for the hog. Clark was carrying Venom, his entire leg was a bloody mess. Clark threw Venom into the Hog and got in the drivers seat. Chela jumped into the gunner.
"Go!"
Clark punched the gas. The wheels spun out as the Hog roared to life and took off along the dark cold road. Chela heard more screams. This time, they were not human. Banshees went flying over head screaming that ghostly scream as they went. The woods took on a strobe light look as Chela started up the 50 on the back. Shots ripped through the canopy of the trees and into the back of one of the Banshees. The wing of the banshee ripped off and nearly hit the Hog as it dropped. The Banshee itself dropped into the woods off to the right. The road was illuminated with an eerie blue light as the Banshee hit the ground and exploded.
A green explosion went off to the left of the Hog nearly knocking it off the road. The hounds were on the chase Chela thought grimly. More explosions, this time closer. The Hog lifted on to 2 wheels while maintaining the suicidaly high speed Clark was driving. Chela started up the 50 again this time aiming directly at the front of the Banshee. Shots bounced straight off the front, nothing seemed to penetrate that part. As the banshee made another pass overheard Chela had a chance to strafe the back of the Banshee with fire from the Hogs 50 cal. Even though the banshee itself stayed intact, the Shee went swirling off to the side. Must have hit the driver, Chela thought.
"Great Shot!" Chela heard Clark shout from the drivers seat. Venom only groaned. Clark started to slow down the Hog. The Banshees were off their tail for now. Time to get back to base and regroup.
By the time Clark pulled into the hanger of the Alpha base Venom was in severe condition. His leg had bled out alot and he was very low on blood. Medics were already at the hanger waiting for them. Venom was taken out on a stretcher looking pale as a ghost.
"What happened?" an awe struck marine asked.
"Nothing" Chela replied grimly.
A voice sounded from behind Chela and Clark. " I need a status report ASAP" Chela turned to see who had said this. Major Cubbie was in the doorway to the base.
"I will explain inside" Clark muttered, "It seems we have an army coming our way"
Chapter 2 The Hunters and the Hunted
Insane S crawled from his wrecked banshee, chest aching horribly. He quickly assessed himself. Some broken ribs, maybe some internal bleeding. Insane checked his shields. Busted, of course. Well, he had been lucky to get out of that crash alive as it was. Insane thought back to training, the survival rate for banshee wrecks were, well, not good. Insane flexed his four mandibles, bruised from the crash. He set out at a trot, hoping to regroup with his squad. His white armor looked like a ghost flashing through the cold nights trees. He passed the holes that were dug out by the humans. Foxholes they called them, who knew what a fox was. Perhaps the Prophets, up there in High Charity did. Thinking of the Prophets reminded Insane of how the humans were destroying Forrunner artifacts. They were disgusting in their stupidity. As Insane ran through the trees he heard the shout of voices. Humans. Another scouting squad of course. Insane turned on his cloaking, reminding himself that he had no shields, and only his sword for a weapon. He stopped at the side of the path the humans were on, waiting for them to get closer. Only three of them, each armed with some kind of rifle. Insane activated his sword as the humans approached. As they passed by Insane he leaped out at the first, a single swipe of his sword slicing the pathetic thing in half. The second had only time to shout as Insanes sword plunged through his body. The third had enough time to get 3 shots off, two missing Insane over the shoulder, but the third striking him in the arm. Insane dropped the sword as the three bullets met the bone in his arm. He screamed in pain as the marine put a fourth shot into his leg. Insane fell to the ground as the human approached. He said something in his human language as he leveled the rifle at Insanes head. Just as he was about to pull the trigger, a shot sounded from a beam rifle off to the left. The shot ripped through the marines neck as Fireskull emerged from the trees, Red armor looking like the blood now splattered all over the ground.
"Come" he said, "We have humans to hunt"
Chapter 3 Lock and Load
After explaining exactly what had happened in the woods to Major Cubbie, Clark and Chela headed to the infirmary to check on Venom. He was up and walking, that much was good. Venoms leg was bandaged and no longer bleeding, and the medic said Venom was good to go back to the front line. Venom was not thrilled.
"Going back to the front just means getting shot at by those strange Elite creatures." Venom said.
"Well you dont have a choice" Cubbie was back, this time with Private Redcon. "Private Redcon will be assisting you three."
"Assisting with what?" Venom asked.
"You four will be going on a strike mission into the heart of the Covenant camp. You will take the eastern path through the woods where you were earlier attacked. The army that you three encountered earlier should be headed towards Alpha base. I want you guys to let them pass you, and then get them from behind."
"You expect us to do that with only four men?" Redcon asked.
"If you guys really want to you can take up to two more men with you. Your choice." Cubbie replied.
"I think we should take Read and Jojash." Venom suggested.
"Agreed" The other three all murmured.
"Then its settled" Cubbie said, "You six will get all the weapons you need together and get behind that Covenant army."
Only 2 hours later, Clark, Chela, Venom, Redcon, Jojash and Read were headed out into the woods. Read, Redcon, and Jojash all had Battle Rifles and a Pistol. Clark had grabbed a sniper rifle and a Battle Rifle, Chela was carrying a Shotgun and a Battle Rifle. Venom was equipped with Rockets and an Assault Rifle. Everything was ready, time to get moving. The six headed out into the woods, moving silently and unseen, fleeting shadows from tree to tree. As the six reached Clark and Venoms fox hole they stopped.
"We need somewhere to hide while the Covenant army passes through." Clark said.
"How about the trees?" Redcon suggested,
"Sounds good, we just have to hope to god they don't look up." Clark responded.
As they climbed the trees, Chela signaled that he heard voices. Only mid way up the tree, Jojash stopped and leveled his battle rifle. If they saw them, might as well be ready. He thought.
Squadron after squadron of grunts and Elites passed without ever glancing up. When the last passed by, they all breathed a sigh of relief. The danger had passed, and now it was now time to chase it.
