All of those are simply call signs so that over radio you can correctly identify what the speaker is trying to say. The high numbers do seem to suggest Pelicans to me (like Echo 419) but yes the Sierra tag could stand for Spartan. Everyone has to see though that you are all only speculating in the end. Even if one of you proves to be correct when the game drops as of now it is only speculation.
That is a valid point for the Sirrea call signs but I agree with Hylebos that we will be playing as a new group of Spartans.

You're gonna play as the chief, if not then I can almost say "**** this game."

Seriously? I think this halo has the ability to be the best halo yet if bungie doesn't screw up. And I can't wait for the Beta!

Sierra can also be akin to saying "S" in a clear way, aka S for Spartan. It is very possible that they used that to keep the Covenant from knowing who or what it is. Although the trailer itself almost defeats that when he says, "we've got Spartans on the ground." But still, it is perfectly reasonable to suspect it to be a spartan, since there is no reason to send a bridge/crew security teams to Reach's surface.

There's not a single instance in the canon of the story when Sierra is used to describe a spartan BEFORE the second battle of Earth. Infact, Master chief has no problem announcing that he's a spartan while ON the same Forerunner ship as Truth.

There's hardly any reason to believe that Sierra is code for Spartan the majority of the time.

Has Echo ever been used to Identify Elites? It must be so, since E=Elites. Right?

Have you ever thought why they haven't referred any Spartan as a Sierra before the second battle of Earth? Because there's no games we have played in any other Human controlled territory besides Earth.

Chief didn't have a problem announcing himself as a Spartan because he was already entering Earth's atmosphere and the Covenant probably knew he was already in the same ship.

There's not a slight problem for Sierra-259 being a Spartan from Team Beta.

Just a note. You guys keep talking about this Beta team that consists of Spartans. Spartan squads and teams are always color coded. Red Team, Blue Team, Grey Team, Green Team... so why do we keep refering to Red Team as Team Beta?

Team Beta was a splinter of Red team on Reach.

They were tasked with defending the orbital defense generators. Not much is known about them.

Team Beta was a splinter group of Red Team. Fred assigned for different splinter teams(Alpha, Beta, Gamma and Delta) to different tasks. Team Beta was assigned to protecting the Super MAC generators but they died soon after.

Except there were 150 candidates, and they only had room for 75, and only 33 survived after the augmentations.

That means we only have SPARTAN 001 to SPARTAN 150.

Exactly. Which is why I am not denying the fact it could be something else. But so far all we have is one Spartan being refered to as Sierra 117, and now in Reach we have Sierra 259. It is just way too coincidental to just be an accident. Especially with Bungie.

Anyone ever think of the possibility of Spartan III's? They were active around this time if I remember right.

Read Privet Caboose's thread.

Here is an extract of his thread concerning the S-IIIs.

"While we are on the Spartan III subject, I'm going to point out why it is impossible for Spartan IIIs to be a part of this game.

Reach was invaded August 30th, 2552.

All of Alpha company was killed in 2537
All of Beta Company was killed in 2545, except for Tom and Lucy, who went on to train Gamma.
Gamma company didn't receive orders to move off of Oynx until October 2552, After Reach had fell. And Even if Some of Gamma was at Reach (no clue how they would of gotten there) they have different call signs, such as "Ash - G099".

They were active but I'm pretty sure they were either on that one planet destroying the covenent cache (or methane thingy or whatever it was they destroyed) or on Onyx. But I haven't read the books in forever.

Just throwing it out there honestly. I don't need to read a wall of text when I can get the answer this way.

So that means TFoR facts hasn't been retconned before?
If not, explain Gray Team, Sam, Randal and Sheila + 30 Spartans at Reach (when counting the 5 new Spartans from First Strike)

And what makes you so sure there wasn't scanned possibly 320 children for possible induction before lowering the count to 150 candidates?

Maybe if you took the time to read it, you'd understand that Blue team is the most logical team to play as.
