Subject: The Books mess up the Halo Universe

I'm not saying the Halo books are bad, in fact they are very well written, but they do make the Halo Universe more confusing. They do add a lot of new information, but I think that the Books and the Video Games, should be somewhat separate. The books now mess the Halo Series up, because each new game will now be a prequel.

If Bungie had stuck to making prequels, then everything would have been fine. Nothing to mess up the past.

My idea is that they re-write a whole new time line, and make things make more sense, focusing more on what happens in the video games, and not the novels.

My thoughts for the novels are that they should be only about smaller human/covenant conflicts, and not major ones like Reach, because it makes the canon more confusing.

Now Bungie is forced to not include some things that may make Reach more interesting, such as adding Flood, or new enemies, because it will not correspond with the novel.

So I think the new "rule" should be this.

Halo Video Game Facts > Halo Novels/Comics/Anime/Movie

That way they may add whatever they please into the new games.

Thoughts?

Whats confusing about the books? Other than the pointless gravity crystal side story in First Strike, everything else made sense to me.

Its not like they won't be able to make a game about Reach. It will be easy to infact. Just focus on five spartans that were never given names, had their characters explored, or were focused on in Fall of Reach and follow them as they fight a losing battle on the surface and you have yourself a game.

No not at all.

Harry potter was books before they made the films and they kept everything the same they just had to cut out things to make it shorter because the books were too long.

the way i see it the Games mess with the halo Universe;

1- the vehicles, weapons, battles have to be restricted to the game engine
2- weapons have to be balanced; which you would think the advanced Alien weapons would be more effective than the Human's
3- the Games are based around ONE space marine that saves the universe 3 times over.

but this is just me

You cant really take a mythos and rewrite it. And the books expand on the universe and make it that much deeper and enjoyable. Like, to know that John isnt a mindless military killing machine, but has emotions, and a backstory. they are a good thing to have.

Covvies wanted for (I believe) better slip space capabilities, Dr. Halsey and the survivors denied them that. The person that gave it to the one guy (can't remember names atm, been awhile since I've read) new it was dangerous and would get them all killed so s/he gave it to the one person that had nothing left to lose since his love interest died by the crystal.

Anyway, cannon order, Games - Books/Soundtracks/other Media - Bungie Affiliates - Halopedia

I understand that but it kind of ruins what we are going to expect. The fact that they can't make up different stuff is what bothers me.

Lets say this happened.

There were no books, just Halo Wars, Halo Ce, Halo 2, Halo 3 ODST, and Halo 3. They wouldn't have to hold back on anything for Halo Reach. There would be no detail on what happened in Reach, and they can choose how things unfold. This means they can explain why there would be Flood, or other enemies only fought on Reach.

Adding new things like weapons don't mess up the storyline, but it does make things more annoying and confusing when the novel states that such and such were not used.

Therefore, if Bungie does make the story based on the Reach book, they would have to either make an excuse for adding new weapons/enemies, or not include anything new. I understand we will be following different characters in the game Halo Reach.

Just try and see things from my point of view before you make stupid postes with one word like "NO". You know who you are.

Nonsense!

Your face messes up the Halo universe.

The books were designed to tell stories that happened before, during, or after the events at Alpha Halo. Don't say they mess it up; they just add more detail to it.

i think the books havent messed up the haloverse at all the only game that has slight issues and contradicts some of the books is Halo Wars (still a great game though) like the Spartans wearing Mark 5 armor and having shields and we talked about the flood being in the game already.

I personally think that it's odd that Elites (The commanding Officers of the Covenant) weren't encountered until 2552, 27 YEARS INTO THE WAR!!

That's why I'm glad that Halo Wars retconned that little detail.

"You must be mistaken, Reclaimer. I've met your makers, and they don't even know your name..."

If you are so entrenched in the canon aspect that you argue against adding something awesome to the next Halo game, Bungie's LAST HALO GAME, then I feel you shouldn't get a vote. Canon is good. Gameplay is better. Did Master Chief have a gravity rifle on Reach? No, but maybe someone else did. There's so much to explore I have no doubt Bungie will add in something new and cool, and still loop right around the canon side of it. They're pretty cool like that.

its like star wars you watch the ending but then you see where it all started.

the teaser tells the same story "from the beginning...you know the end"

the books just adds to the story of the halo world or the future

You forget that if there weren't books, that there would be very little to no background information for Reach, which means the game PROBABLY wouldn't be made. The only reason Bungie can make this game is from the details/storyline from the books.

Your in Bad Company.

I disagree, I think it adds immensely to the universe.

Doesn't the Manual on Halo CE mentions Reach? If so, the Author just took the names and events and filled it up with details.

I do not appreciate B.Net Group solicitation. If you ignore this and send me an invitation anyway, I will block communications with you.

The books add backstory to the universe's canonical storyline. For the sake of continuation, since they've tended to take liberties for the sake of the game (such as maintaining the illusion that Master Chief is the last Spartan remaining), they do keep the games and novels separate.

However, there is no reason not to implement knowledge from one to the other if it can be done smoothly.

Also, the existence of the novels does not mean that there can only be prequels. How the hell does that make any sense? We're getting a prequel because the next Halo-related saga further along the timeline (meaning, after Halo 3), will likely be spearheaded by 343 Studios once they have the details hammered out on how they're going to proceed with the franchise.

The books don't ruin a thing.

  • 10.21.2009 3:46 PM PDT

amen.. i love the books but I don't like how they limit the games

  • 10.21.2009 3:48 PM PDT

I love the books, too. It's just that I don't necessarely agree with all of the details.

  • 10.21.2009 3:50 PM PDT

No, The Fall of Reach created the Halo universe. Without the book, there would be no Halo backstory. At all. Hell, as far as Im concerned it only comes second to Halo CE in terms of cannon.

Here's a short list of some things we all know and love in Halo that only exist because of the cannon established in Fall of Reach:

1. ODSTs
2. Prophets
3. Spartans (We just knew that's what MC was called)
4. The UNSC/Covenant war (It was only implied in Halo CE)

Halo CE is just a game without the book. FoR shaped it into a universe.

well if the spartan call signs from the trailer are correct, it looks like this is about spartans that have yet to be discussed. the rumored ONI wave of spartans? (a different group of spartans raised very soon after the original 150, but trained by ONI rather than the UNSC

Halo: CE came out in November 2001 while TFoR came out in October 2001.
