Furry At Heart,
Furry Forever óÓÒò

Supreme mastery therefore, is not to be victorious in all your battles; supreme excellence is to be victorious without fighting.

Using the in-game engine for cutscenes was something jump-started by Metal Gear Solid as a way of keeping you immersed in the game world.

I think that doing things that way is a good idea.

It may not look as good but you feel like you're still there.

I understand you guys want in-game engine cutscenes for Halo: Reach and I want it too.
BTW Final Jewel, nice ranting about the Halo cutscenes, you should know that CGI cutscenes in video games takes more space than in-game engine cutscenes for the disc.

I think their cutscenes are awesome. Bungie don't listen to him.

For the last time! I don't want it at all because I realized how much space CGI cutscenes take for the game disc.

1.Arkham Asylum, 2.Mass Effect, 3.Halo CE, 4.Mass Effect 2, 5.Halo 2, 6.Splinter Cell Double Agent, 7.Gears of War 2, 8.Medievil, 9.Oblivion, 10.Crash Team Racing

No, unimmersive. We could also get Animatrix type of mishmash cutscenes for artistic purposes, but it would be horrible.

ODST looks fine, I don't care if Reach isn't any prettier. Adding more people on screen, better physics... is a lot more important.

  • 10.22.2009 9:26 AM PDT

Final Fantasy seems to do both flawlessly, when they are talking its in-game, then when in action scenes they are pre-rendered, MGS series has also got amazing in-game cut scenes, so if Halo Reach game engine is A--MAZING, then yeah in-game should look good then.

I'd love to be a 10 year old and tell my mom I'm going on an adventure out into the world catching Pokemon, with her full support. Never mind the fact that there are rapists, criminals, and murders out there, or the fact that I may get killed by a Pokemon.

Luckily I have Pikachu.

CGI is not needed, it would take up alot of space on the disc which would be unnecessary.

I'd just like to watch the scenes in an extras type menu after unlocking them like in Halo Wars and Perfect Dark 64.

Either that, or just have the newer engine clean up some of the graphics, specifically faces and facial animation, and the cut scenes won't look terrible and there wouldn't be wasted disk space due to CGI/FMV cutscenes.

What did they use for Halo Wars? Cause I know bungie helped with Halo Wars, so they could probably use that to make the cut scenes. Even tho gameplay in Halo wars was badish, the cut scenes were amazing in my book.

Bungie didnt make Halo Wars.

He said they HELPED. Dude, learn to read.

it doese'nt look nextgen , looks good but not nextgen
If by next-gen you mean crappy, dark and colorless, I agree. It doesnt look next-gen at all.

Never. I've always loved how they used real-time cutscenes. It makes the game flow better.
Agreed. On games like Final Fantasy (like the game or not you have to agree they really put a good amount of time and effort on them) they feel somewhat out of place. You see this perfect CGI cutscenes that last up to 3 minutes and the game starts and it looks like crap.

Also as stated above, these CGI cutscenes take up too much disk space.

I hunt for the Prophet of Contentment, the San 'Shyumm that murdered my son, and stole his birthright, his Energy Sword. They call our species Heretics. They claim to all that our tongues sting, our words a vile poison that feeds on the unworthy. I have seen the true face of Heresy. The head of a gallant warrior lay on the ground. His neck scorched and blistered, scarred by his own blade. I shall retrieve the weapon, and drive it through that bastard's heart! Punishment for his sins is nigh.

No, Bungie takes great pride in making games that do not require CGI cutscenes, and they should continue in that pride.

Halo Wars Cutscenes > Anything else

They can use those.

Btw, Click here for awesome spartan vs elite halo wars cutscene.

Don't you wish master chief did that in a halo game? :)

A full-lenght FPS game made like that would not only take several years to make, but would require more storage space than even the largest commercially available BD disk can offer.

Speaking of Metal Gear, Bungie should get Hideo Kojima and some other people from Kojima Productions to direct the cutscenes. That would be badass.

There's really no point. I'm sure Reach will look great when it comes out and the reason why other devs use CGI for their cutscenes is because their engines just aren't suited for what is often something common in cutscenes-- a larger scale display. Halo games work on a grand scale already.

No, using the game engine is much better, using CGI creates a huge divide between gameplay and cut scenes. It doesn't feel as much of a part of the game then.

ya, gotta know who you are...

This isn't Final Fantasy X.
The contrast between, gameplay and cutscenes would break the flow, they work so hard to establish.
"Oh, this movie is awesome."
"aww, it's over."
"This game looks like crap."
"Why can't it look like that all of the time"
"Bungie, you really need to step up your engine"

See what happens there? Having a cutscene in CGI takes away. It's distracting. You're jumping in and out of cutscenes instead of being a part of what's going on. The cutscenes and the game become two completely seperate things.
Bad idea.

CGI is a waste of time and should only be used in the instance that a real time engine can't handle cutscenes. Every Halo game so far (But ODST, I mean, it is Halo 3: ODST) has used a game engine specifically developed by Bungie for that game. Using CGI is honestly a waste of time and effort if the developers have created a decent, powerful engine.
