You say that Most MLG community members are arrogant pricks. Do I come across as arrogant? I feel that my attempts to help break down stereotypes between the two groups are quite the opposite. I agree some are arrogant, but just as many are arrogant here. All groups have arrogant pricks, but the core MLG followers who have been around more than two or three years tend to hate the idiots who post on our forums just as you hate them when they post on your forum.

I am well aware that this debate will never truly be solved and such posts have arose in the past. Also this is not a post focusing on bungie itself taking notice of the MLG community. This post is made in order to try to help the two communities come together and not spew hate about one another as commonly happens. Both sides are guilty of this, I will admit that I have been guilty of this; however, the quintessential argument I am making is to at least act diplomatically to one another.

Consider me a pessimist, but I believe the only true way to stop the stereotypes and hate between these two communities is for Bungie to stop making games. You can't stop human nature.

all steryotypes are rooted in real behavior and actions.

People think MLGs are arrogant pricks because, well.... Most ARE.

it doese'nt look nextgen , looks good but not nextgen
If by next-gen you mean crappy, dark and colorless, I agree. It doesnt look next-gen at all.

Bungie should just stick to making good games that you can customize and MLG should stick to customizing those games to their liking. No BR? Find a new weapon to balance things out and make things competitive.

Who cares what MLG players think. A game is made to be fun not hardcore and competitive. A game is made for people to have fun and enjoy themselves, not b1tch about BR spread.

Fun is a relative term you idiot, which means that what's fun to you isn't necessarily fun to another person. Competitive gaming doesn't mean un fun gaming, people get their fun out of competition. Try not to be such an idiot when you post, people won't take you seriously.

I agree, people should not bash other communities for having different opinions about a game. Most stuff MLG players are asking for are in the custom games options, stuff like adjustable bullet spread, mannual host assignation, remove the auto-aim on the rocket launcher etc. Most of our demands would not affect the casual community and vice versa. The key to our happyness is giving all of us as much options as possible.

Stop the hate, love the game

Exactly, more custom options benefit everyone.

And it does not interfere with the casual gamers online experince but may increase there enjoyment of the game
casual gamer will be benefited not be shunned

My point being that it would be much easier to take you seriously if you didn't start calling people idiots for stating that they didn't like competitive games.

  • 10.26.2009 8:18 AM PDT

That's like saying football is not meant to be competitive. It is human nature to have competition and when a multiplayer game is developed that is the primary goal. I don't care who you are you cannot enjoy losing and if you do then you have bigger problems. Competition breeds excellence in anything, from personal development to something as simple as a video game. If games weren't meant to be competitive then there wouldn't be winners and losers, it would be like giving every kid a trophy whether they won or lost, which isn't realistic.

"This party's over." ~Mace Windu

PPPPPP--POWER!

You see the point to remember here is that Bungie is and will forever make games that are more marketable to the masses. Their goal is positive cashflow, and if you make a game that is only marketable to the competitive gaming community, said cashflows are going to be so small that a company like Bungie probably wouldn't be able to sustain itself.

The trick here is (which I think Bungie has accomplished) to create a game that is wholly accepted by the casual gamer but is complex enough that a group as competitive as MLG can also benefit from it. Obviously Bungie allows the ability to create custom game types, which is practically appeasement to MLG as it is. Honestly MLG needs to stop complaining that Bungie has slighted them, and get on with competing. Leave the "subtleties" to the real professionals.

Btw OP, paragraphs man. It makes reading a lot easier.

Why is this in the Reach thread? Are we implying Reach will have MLG? I hope not.

Be honest with me Bnet kids (no offense), but if the game was catered to competitive players, would it even phase you guys? NO, it wouldn't... you guys wouldn't notice.. or care. If you guys really want to have fun like you claim, you would find a way to have fun... nobody has fun with an AR or spiker... or shotgun, or the hammer... if they do then they're honestly stupid. People who use those weapons just want to win the easiest way possible with no skill involved.

Why wouldn't there be MLG in Reach? Halo's main promoter is MLG. There would be less players if MLG did not promote each Halo game. If you don't like MLG, don't play it. I play both MLG and Social pesonally. The so called "MLG Stereotypes" are unliked by MLG and whenever they make any posts on the forum, they are constantly flamed and eventually banned from the site. Same thing happens here at B.net.
MLG is trying to improve the general community by influencing Bungie to have more customization. If there was more customization for Reach, then one, Casual players could make more custom games for fun. And two, MLG would be able to make more customized gametypes to appeal to their fans.
Competitive players like me who aren't MLG Pros, or wannabes, play other playlists. My teamates play social and have craploads of them. I love Griffball personally, which is still considered a competitive community. Griffball would be extremely beneficial from more customization. Being able to make completly new maps on completly empty canvases or walled off arenas for MLG, or Griffball, or an infection map that would have to be walled off.
Reach will have MLG even if there is no playlist. Halo 1 and 2 were like this. CoD and Gears are still like this.

MLG is not Halo's main promoter. that would be Micro$oft.

I am a Halo 3 Failure.

To those with the "Halo isn't a competitive game it's for fun!" argument, you could not be more blind, same thing to those who think Halo is a competitive game.

Let's look at Baseball, can I have a fun game with my friends during the Summer? Absolutely. Can the Red Socks and the Yankee's have a hardcore game, trying there all to win? No doubt, yes. Same thing with Halo, we can have fun and we can be hardcore at the same time, we don't have to be just one thing, you don't see Baseball players fighting about this now do we, but that's because Baseball players don't have fans as stupid as people (Tucker 051 being the perfect example) who can hide behind the internet and act retarded.

My problems [with Reach] are basically just full parties, mlg, and people who go out of their way not to get killed.

The war will never end. The possibility of that happening has the same chances as Republicans and Democrats ending debates over issues.

I am on neither side. I play for fun and competetively. There is nothing wrong with either side. MLG folk are usually the ones to start fights with their elitist attitude.

Weekend Warriors are more likely to use personal insults rather than debate the topic at hand. Neither side is perfect and at fault for the fight.

For Reach, Bungie will attempt to balance things out I am sure. But they know they have a huge hardcore community to cater to so they will try to make it "MLG friendly".

They also know they have casual gamers to cater to. It will be like Halo 3; they will attempt balance between the two.

Believe it or not they did a great job with balance in Halo 3. Don't believe me? Why is Halo 3 the MLG flagship game? Why is Halo 3 constantly number one on the most played 360 games list?

...Are you guys serious?

Look, there are always going to be -blam!-s and idiots on the internet. So stereotypes will still be made, and people's feelings will continue to be hurt, and the cycle will continue. So what is the solution?

If you are smart, you will let the commoners bicker and fight with their labels and their stereotypes. You are a powerful warrior of the internet. Logic and Reasoning are your Sword and Shield. You gaze down from your fortress at their petty conflicts with disgust. You could swoop down and destroy them in an instant, but why bother? Strike one down and five more will come forward to replace them, and even worse you would get dirt on your new shoes.

So you remain in your castle, proclaiming the truth with a loud booming voice that drowns out the sounds of battle below. Over time, others might aspire to be like you, and seek you out. A sanctuary is created, consisting of people who are willing to let go of generalizations so that they can all discuss a topic seriously. The war is still going on, but who cares? Let those fools die for their silly cause, you shouldn't care, or even acknowledge that there is even a problem.

Oh yes, those multi-million dollar marketing campaigns for each game and the nationally televised commercials pale in comparison to the marketing giant that is MLG.

bungie has proven that a bunch of monkeys sitting in front of keyboards can randomly type out a masterpiece. the thing is, when you go to play the masterpiece, you cant help but notice all the monkey s**t smeared all over it.

it gets real old having to wait months for someone like mlg to clean off all the monkey poo.

of course. games dont have winners and losers. they dont have scores or stats. they dont consist of a carefully selected set of rules designed to see who is the best. they certainly dont have any competitive merit in them whatsoever.

whenever someone invites me to play monopoly or chess, i just have fun. when i get bored, i just start throwing the pieces at the cat or make paper airplanes out of the money. thats the only way to have fun. who cares if the other players get angry because they expected to have a fair competition. they have no lives.
