Subject: Sierra259 and Sierra320 need not be Spartans. Clue from the Halo 2 Era

Doc: "i'm a pacifist"
Caboose: "your a thing that babies suck on?"
Tucker: "no dude, that's a pedephile"
Church: "tucker, i think he means a pacifier"

Not a bad theory overall, but it is dependant on the possibility of ILB being canon, which to my knowledge has never been actaully confirmed or denied. It is still debated whether or not the graphic novel is considered such, though it is more likely than not.

There are several smaller details that can be retconned by Bungie writers if they feel the need. They have done this already in Contact Harvest and they will more than likely continue to do so as the series moves forward.

S-259 Says:
"You got SPARTANs on the ground sir,"
"We're not going anywhere"

This leads us to believe that he is a Spartan.

False, In Halo: Ghosts of Onyx every Spartan II has been believed KIA apart from John 117, Kurt 051 who was Stated as MIA to provide secrecy for the Spartan III Program, Fred 104, Linda 058, Kelly 087 and Will 043.

This leads us to believe he is not a Spartan, as all Spartan II's Were deployed to defend Reach apart from Blue Team, Sierra 259 said "You've got Spartans on the Ground Sir, We're not going anywhere."

They were attempting to communicate with Noble 1, Sierra 259 I believe may be apart of Noble 1's Crew, they were saying to Nova 1 that they need him in the fight, meaning he wasn't in the fight already, meaning he is not a Spartan as all Spartans were deployed apart from who I stated and none of those Spartans had the Tag 259, meaning that unless Bungie has another surprise for us, Sierra 259 is not a Spartan.

By the way im not stating that I believe that Sierra 259 and 320 are Spartans, I'm just saying that what makes many people believe that they are Spartans is not the "Sierra" part, its what he said.

As for your Ghost of Onyx theory, it has no substance. John went into Reach because he got the signal from Anton. Anton's team knew that the others were in the Castle Base. If Anton didn't know about Castle Base, the Chief would've probably left Reach with only Anton's team.

If the other Spartans were in Reach and could not communicate with either Fred or John, it doesn't mean that they are dead. It just means that they cant contact anyone so no one knows where they are. Sure you could assume they are dead but that is a halfassed way to look at things especially when we know how resilient Spartans are (they are like cockroaches). Also, you talk about Ghost of Onyx, but that happened around the time of Halo 2. This is pre-Halo:CE so they are still alive.

I never stated anything about John going into reach, I know he does but that was not stated in my post therefore, it has no relevance to my post, I am saying the Spartan II's I have stated are the only ones confirmed alive, as bungie stated in Halo CE it states "You are the last of your kind. Bred for combat, builet for war, you are master of any weapon, pilot of any vehicle... and fear no enemy."

then in Halo Ghosts of Onyx, they brung Kelly, Kurt, Fred, Linda and Will back into the picture, confirming unless they have another unrelised break in the plot, these are the only Spartans alive.

It does in terms of sci-fi. It may not have the best authors, but the story has some serious roots and hat tips to other science fiction. That is what sci-fi is all about, knowledgeable referencing to other things. There is a reason there are so many typical practices in the genre, because fans enjoy recollection to the movies, books and games that started that fad.

If 'terms of sci-fi' are a lot of things that could be expoilted that are not and a really bad script, yes, Halo is a wanderful story 'in terms of sci-fi'.

Posted by: UL7IM4 G33K
Bioshock had a good story, but at the same time it wasn't really new. I have a friend just like you who thinks that story means everything in a game and he also constantly references Citizen Kane as being the best movie in existence. What he fails to understand is that there is no "right" way to do things outside of completely forgetting the basic rules and screwing up out of ignorance. Every movie, game, and book has something to offer in terms of positive and negative and until people like you understand this you will always have high standards that destroy the possibility for you to completely enjoy something that isn't a masterpiece (Halo isn't trying to be one).

When did I say what is in bold?

Also, I have to say Halo should try to be a masterpiece. If it never tries, it is damned to mediocrity.

Posted by: UL7IM4 G33K
Another thing I have noticed is that games with brilliant stories aren't replayed nearly as much as games with good mechanics. Personally, a game falls in this order:

Gameplay > Story > Visuals > Easter Eggs/MP Implementation > DLC

Sound is as important as visuals. Easter Eggs aren't important and DLC is a bad point for any game if it is not free.

Posted by: UL7IM4 G33K
But back to what I was saying: unless you have hard roots in the sci-fi film genre, then you have no right to call Halo's story or screenplay crap. Cause it isn't. I recommend you watch these three movies to get the references within Halo: Alien, Starship Troopers, Stargate.

Those films are 'good' at best. Sci-fi is a non-expoilt genre because films are made to earn money. In Sci-fi movies, you only need a good publicity, movies can be a s*it, you still earn those millions. Just see the new Star Wars trilogy, rubbish, just rubbish, but there was a lot of money. What does it mean? A sci-fi game with a very good recreated environment (Metroid Prime) with a good story (Star Wars: Empire Strikes Back), a good way of telling the story (BioShock), a good gameplay (Halo series), a good OST (well, Metroid, SW and Halo has beautiful ones), good artistic design (same as OST) and a good graphic engine (I'd do a new one) would be one of the best games ever. Why doesn't Bungie do it? Simple, why spend 10 resources if you earn the same money spending only 3?

This is Sierra-259 you got Spartans on the ground, sir. We're not going anywhere

Think about this. Sierra 259 could be a Marine. Spartan reinforcements have come down. You plus them are not going anywhere.

Possibility.

If not you try explaining to me how Bungie pulled out a Spartan 259 out of their backsides. We'll be back to square 1.

This would actually convince me to believe that it might not be a spartan, but it's just that voice... it sounds like a spartan , because I've never heard a marine sound so badass.

Lord Hood refers to the MC as Sierra-117. It is logical and most likely a fact that the two are spartans. And its the first level "so to speak" in Halo 3. Sorry pal but if wasen't for those two facts I would have belived you.

S= Sierra in armed forces call tags

SIMPLE?!?!?!?! Have you even looked past the games storyline? That's the biggest underestimate I've ever heard

Underestimate? Try falsity. As to the OP, if nothing else this proves that it might not be a Spartan. I personally think it is, simply because Reach is going to be a finale, and they probably want the main characters to be Spartans. Then again, that's not necessarily the main character speaking. *Sigh*. I hate thinking.

You're misunderstanding the purpose of this thread. He knows that Sierra 117 is the Chief, he's trying to prove that Sierra doesn't need to be a designation for a Spartan.

I doubt a pelican would decide not to retreat while doing nothing after possibly dropping Spartans to the surface.

True dat. That was a weak link. Was just putting up other possibilities. Its highly likely that the Sierra 10852 connection makes the most sense though Sierra 320 and Sierra 259 could be Marines from a 'Combat Team Sierra', stationed on Reach.
Im glad to see people are now agreeing with me.

Sierra doesnt necessarily mean Spartans. It could mean a team of spartans, a pelican dropship with Spartans aboard.

NO one can say Sierra = Spartans

Read up on this

I came up with the same theory a while ago

Oh god, yes. While I took out the specific examples, yours provided the overarching proof with good support.

But, its tough ain't it? Suggest something different and you immediately get flamed. We're not trying to say we don't even want to see Spartans in Reach, are we? I'm sure you, as I do myself, would love to see Spartans: More than 1. We're just offering a suggestion that the Sierras mentioned in the trailer need not be Spartans.

Why this makes sense? Because, there were only 150 Spartan Candidates in the first place (Go read Fall of Reach. Its says so right there), so unless a Second Class of Spartan 2s were trained, a fact so many times in the fiction put down, there is no way in hell Bungie can give a good reason as to why we have a Spartan 259 or Spartan 320.

Thank you really.

you're naut cookin'

Think of this from a marketing perspective. Everyone knows what Halo games are about. With the exception of ODST which was heavily marketed as something different and not Spartan.

Whatever those Sierra's are, I'm putting my money on them being Spartans. Confusing an audience that doesn't write essays on their forums isn't really an agenda. But thats just a guess.

As for the "We're not going anywhere.", could just mean they're stuck. In a tricky situation. Like in the book, which is coincidentally named Fall of Reach. In that you know the end from the beginning too! Maybe they're about the same thing.

EDIT: Look at the picture. Theres a few Spartans there.

join the:
ninja acadame

if we go with battle team sierra outlook, then they could still be spartans, maybe MC was the only one who got to keep his serial number, then it would make sense that it would be the rest of the spartans, that would then lead me to believe that the sierra battle team were older than the spartan program and MC would have just been filling out for a dead marine whose call sign was 117 before, this theory does make sense though

  • 11.01.2009 2:20 AM PDT

I don't think I heard it right, but I saw a cutscene, & I'm almost sure that I heard an ODST being referred to as "Sierra" and then he dropped in his pod. It was bad quality, but I'm trying to find the link again, it was from Halo 2.

Name ten gaming masterpieces in terms of story. You also have your standards way too high for a shooter story. If you want story in your shooters, play Half Life 2. Story out the wazoo along with mediocre and tiring game play mechanics.

Posted by: Dix Ponga 9
When did I say what is in bold?

Also, I have to say Halo should try to be a masterpiece. If it never tries, it is damned to mediocrity.

The game's story is a huge part of the game. That doesn't mean the story is or should be a masterpiece. Halo's story is Halo's story regardless. Many times I feel there are ways to make things better, but honestly you still need to know how to take what you are given.

Yes, I agree sound is as important as visuals. You're comment on DLC doesn't change its position however. Easter Eggs is a generalization. It can be anything from skulls to cheat codes to hidden imagery to community references (like Caboose in Halo 3). They are important and every game has had them. They give a game replay value and most games with little to no easter eggs end up being returned.

You don't understand. Ugh. The Sci/fi genre has a personality. It expands from books to movies to TV shows and even games. The movies I referenced aren't supposed to be masterpiece sci/fi. They are supposed to be the clearest illustration of what the sci/fi genre has evolved to. If you want masterpiece, I recommend watching 2001 and Sunshine. Perhaps maybe the independent film called Moon. Or maybe read I, Robot by Asimov or perhaps Brave New World by Aldous Huxley.

Most of these stories are beyond stale to read, but they aren't necessarily supposed to be exciting. They are about exploring the future before us and the possibilities therein. Be it mental, physical, or metaphysical.

The only reason Bungie doesn't submit to your will is because all of your conditions are subjective ones. Some people love the Halo art style, others hate it. Some people enjoy Star Wars others see it as not worth it depending on whatever factors. This is why a true masterpiece, especially in gaming, is damn near impossible because in the end it will shine in whatever people enjoy the most. Halo was campaign and gameplay, Star Wars was the lore and action, etc. It all comes down to what people get out of your game and that is not something you can always control.
