Subject: Computer Bots

I know its easy to find people on matchmaking, but do you think Reach have a "bot" system?

PM me any Coup questions you have.

Yes, I think it should.

  • 10.26.2009 4:33 PM PDT

No, it would be too complicated to make.

And people would complain about the Bots being too dumb.

  • 10.26.2009 4:34 PM PDT

No bots simply aren't smart enough to compete on 3 dimensional maps.

I beg to differ. 007 NightFire was 3 dimensional, and the Bots could be set from easy to difficult. That had a good system.

and Section 8 my friends. Great bot system in my opinion.

There's plenty of games with 3D Bots, and with different difficulty settings as well. Take firefight for example, playing games with all of the bots trying to kill you with certain settings/conditions.

Maybe but i'm saying most games don't have multiple levels of buildings that yu are constantly climbing jumping off of and other things.

Are you serious? what about firefight? the enemies in that are basically bots and that is a 3 dimensional map. What about all the multiplayer games that have come out in the past which has bots, such as Perfect Dark, which allowed you to customize difficulty and play style and that game came out over ten years ago. I would think that AI would have advanced at least a little in that time.

Yes they were bots but making them exactly the same as a real player is impossible. In firefight do you see brutes jumping across things using tactics jumping off large buildings, I'd rather have them focus on gameplay and keep the same Bot-less multiplayer. Firefight's fine.

  • 10.26.2009 4:59 PM PDT

they should, so then if you felt like it you could play like a bajillion player game, which would be awesome

I used to get on these forums back in the Halo 1, anticipating Halo 2 days...I'm back :)

How do bots work when they are on a forged map or a map with the weapons slightly tweaked? How are the bots to understand minor nuances when you create a custom gametype?

Its best just to leave bots out. Halo is too customizable and complex for them.

Marine Corps.
Semper Fi.

My problems [with Reach] are basically just full parties, mlg, and people who go out of their way not to get killed.

It would be beyond awesome.

Oh, and about that 007 game with bots... it was so much fun, but the bots were really stupid and scripted BIG time. They only had a certain number of paths they could take. When running up a corridor, they would run in the same line in that corridor, much like a train.

Of course, that was for the Playstation 2. I'm sure the 360 could fare better than the PS2.

Who said they have to be as real as an actual player? Of course they won't be able to use the same strategies and tactics as a human controlled player, but they can still offer some challenge for people who don't have internet or xbox live and can help people to practice and hone their skills. And about the brutes jumping, they do use some pretty smart tactics in Firefight. Advanced enough for me to want that same AI as a bot in multiplayer.

YESSSSSS for those very annoying days when your internet doesnt feel like working.

- for those of you that think it wont work then play gears of war 2

It's called pathfinding. The bots search through what terrain is traversable and where the weapons are and then come up with the best path to the target which is you. Granted the custom gametypes would probably be an issue but I just want some moving targets that shoot back. That should be plenty easy to do. I don't really care if they don't play by the rules of the custom gametype. Especially when there are human controlled players who don't play by the rules either.

I think bots could be sweet. Firefight was essentially bots, and they have been working on Reach for three years, so there is no good reason why they should send us off without a good Bot gametype. I want to make a Hunter VS Grunt war.

Hate to break it to you, but Bungie (or Microsoft?) actually prefers people who have live over those who don't, it's a fact, just look at all the content that requires live subscriptions to enjoy. Plus, if you want to hone your skills, you won't play against dumb AI, you'll play MM. Simply because while fighting the AI may get you used to the guns, they won't make you good. We (humans) will simply outsmart them and they will become very boring after awhile. AI has to follow a strict set of rules, rules that we learn by playing that AI. Players don't have rules, which is why they are the best kind of enemy.

??? I like saying that word! BOT BOT BOT!

i for one support this idea! :)

Looking to hook up with some competent players! Please PM me if you want a decent team mate, looking to learn from good players and impart what I know to the team too. Im sick of going 'randy' and getting betrayed for the sniper etc.. and having to put up with BK team mates

Absolutely see my thread, I have expanded on this idea. Please offer your ideas and comments, lets get heard!

Microsoft may prefer it, but Bungie just wants to make a great game that everyone can enjoy. Plus, don't you think a game that people without internet or live can enjoy more would be more marketable and make more money? I think Microsoft would be fine with that, and having "dumb" ai, can definitely improve your skills. By "dumb" I say equivalent to the ai in firefight. It may not improve your ability to outwit opponents but it can definitely improve your reaction times and skills with individual weapons as well as improve your aim and headshots. Seriously, I don't know why your arguing for not having a feature in a game that would attract more players to it. It's not like you have to use bots, if you have live then just use live, but there are people who can't afford internet or Live and would still like to have fun with the multiplayer. I mean its a feature that would only make the game better and your against. It seems strange to me.
