My question is not why are Pelicans shot down so much, but why aren't Phantoms shot down more?
Its not as if they're remarkably resilient, or maneuverable. Shouldn't the UNSC have some powerful SAMs? Ones capable of shooting down Phantoms?
Look at Russia's S-300 system. The missile has a range approaching 120 miles, and some variants, though not all, have warheads above 200lbs of HE. That should be able to crack a Phantom, and the UNSC is another 500 years in the future.
What I hope to see in Reach is the whole breadth of the UNSC Covenant war. We've only seen a small fraction of all the weapons available to both sides, hopefully in Reach, they'll use the invasion to show many full scale battles.
Imagine, you're tasked with killing a Gold Elite leading an attack on a UNSC airbase. Above, the Covenant are dropping in Phantoms, loaded with troops. You'll see dozens of them shot down, then you'll have to avoid their wrecks smashing to the earth, while you pick your way through scattered Covenant bands to the Covenant HQ.
Reach shouldn't be about a few dozen soldiers and vehicles on each side, they should reach to show as many as humanly possible.
