Okay the pelican could work as long as there are other transport vehicles in the map. basically the pelican would be like the Elephants.
It would be invincible. You would have to have two people enter it for it to take off.
A direct rocket to the cockpit, or spartan laser would kill the driver and them only. making the pelican rocket to the ground
also it could make for some really sweet capture the flag games.
I'm assuming that if the pelican is invincible, then it would lack the rocket armaments it has in the campaign (It would be even worse than the hornet).
Secondly, if it is invincible except for the cockpit, then you run into problems where a player is virtually impossible to kill. All they would have to do is rotate in circles to ensure the cockpit was not hit. Quite frankly, skilled banshee pilots are virtually unkillable without a laser, and even then its hard to get a shot off before they disappear. What would stop the pelican from being worse? I have some other important questions as well.
What would be the purpose then of the pelican? Would it be a transport vehicle or a base? I was personally treating it as a transport vehicle in my post like the pelican is used in campaign. I guess it could also function as a base.
If it is a transport vehicle, how would you balance it so that it would not be overpowering if a team got the other team's pelican? . Rockets and splazers are generally uncommon at best on halo maps, so how would a team regain control of their pelican after a wipe (forgive the MMO term).
If it is a base, would the flag spawn on the pelican or somewhere else on the map? If the flag is in the pelican, I could see people flying it out of reach to all but enemy aircraft. Sure, having a bunch of aircraft like banshee and hornets sounds like it could work, but again in the event that a team wipes (argghh), it would be literally impossible for them to score at all due to a lack of aircraft. Also, if the pelicans retain any of their speed from the campaign, a game could be over in a matter of seconds if the other team steals your pelican. If the pelican does not have the flag, then see below.
On a similar note, why would a pelican even be a necessary in the flow of the map? My final question is something that I used to wonder about for Sandtrap. Generally speaking, the elephants are best left unmoved and as static geometry. They could just as easily be replaced by actual immobile bases on the maps. If the pelican did not hold the flag, it would serve very little tactical import. It could just as easily be replaced by a troop hog or a rocketless hornet.
Also, if the pelican is where the team spawns and retains its speed, I could see an enemy team storming a pelican and taking it to a very disadvantaged location on the map to spawn kill, kind of like taking an enemy's elephant to the bottom middle of Sandtrap. It is again very easy for a set up enemy team to completely shut down another team and ruin there fun.
