I had an idea for a new kind of Campaign Cooperative mode for Halo: Reach. You would have your basic four-man Campaign for Halo: Reach, but Separate Ways would be different. Your hub world would be a UNSC frigate. Your character would be your own customizable Spartan. Along a portion of the ship you would gather your weapons and equipment. How do you start missions? That is the best part, like Halo 3: ODST you can choose, but it isn't how you think.
Mission Selection
To get to each mission you have two options, a Pelican ride, which may or may not land intact, or a HEV Pod drop to the surface of Reach. When in the Pelican, you may just land safely and leave the dropship or you may get hit and crash to the planetside, who knows. In a HEV Pod, you are able to choose your impact zone , but will still land relatively close to the missions start.
The Setting
The setting for Separate Ways would be on a brand new Reach city called New Johannesburg, yes I know it isn't a real confirmed location on Reach, I made it up. The missions will either be in or around the city in general.
Mission Names/Descriptions
The (hypothetical)missions would be...
1. Evacuation
Set in the city of New Johannesburg, you are tasked with aiding the evacuation of civilians to UNSC transports. At you disposal will be a wide variety of vehicles and Marines.
2. Waypoint
Your objective is to board a Covenant cruiser, much like the Halo: CE mission Truth and Reconciliation, and destroy it. The reason? The ship is stealing power from a energy pipeline that gives power to New Johannesburg and another building called Point Bastion.
3. Last Bastion
Point Bastion is a communication facility carved into a Reach mountain. The Covenant have taken it over and shut it down causing widespread chaos through the planet. Take it back and regain an tactical asset for the battle.
4. Crypt Keeper
Some Scarabs are doing a little digging near, but for what? Whatever it is, it can't be good, take them out from the ground or air with the vehicles at your disposal.
5. Big MAC
Remember the Silent Cartographer level from Halo: CE? Relive that experience by retaking a Covenant captured planetary MAC cannon on an island near the mainland city of New Johannesburg. Go into its bowels and flush out the Covenant.
6. Intel
Back in New Johannesburg, something is in danger, key UNSC intelligence. It is being held in an ONI security building, but the Covenant have broken in. Get the intel first and secure it. To get it though, you'll have to take a bloody tour through and under the mysterious building.
7. Boarding Fraction
ALERT: The UNSC frigate The Engaging is being boarded by the Covenant. Have a Pelican drop you off and help repel the boarding party. This would be one of the few missions not near the city.
8. Vertigo
Apparently the Covenant set up a rather large base camp near an orbital space elevator. Seeing as it is off no use anymore, set some explosive charges and let it fall on the camp.
9. Final Capture
The last mission. After all the other mission have been completed, everyone will be recovered and taken back to the hub. From their you will be tasked with capturing a Covenant battleship that houses a top Covenant leader. To get to him you will go through Grunts, Jackals, packs of Hunters, and powerful Elites all ending with an epic boss battle.
Unfortunately, after completing Final Capture you will have to leave Reach by taking this ship elsewhere because the Covenant are beginning to glass the planet.
The Ripple Effect
What is The Ripple Effect? I'll explain. What you may not have noticed is that all of the missions are occurring at the same time. While say Evacuation is happening, Crypt Keeper is also occurring. The entire battlefield is open. This included the city, the outlying areas, and the UNSC The Engaging.
What is the point? Well, depending on how fast these missions are completed, they could influence other missions. Each person could be playing a separate mission but be in a separate place. Let me give you an example of The Ripple Effect in action.
Say you and a buddy take a Pelican ride down to the Big MAC mission. When you finish it, the MAC Cannon will be UNSC controlled. This could help your other two buddies who is doing the Evacuation mission by blasting Covenant ships and allowing more refugees to escape Reach.
Another example could involve Crypt Keeper and Vertigo. Remember how long the cable on the New Mombasa Orbital Elevator was? It was big and huge. Knocking out the Reach counterpart will destroy the covenant base camp, but it would stretch far enough to hit some of the Scarabs of the Crypt Keeper mission thus making your work easier.
Conclusion
Overall I believe this would be an ambitious new way to experience Co-Op in Halo: Reach by providing a type of mission selection, strategic thought, and just plain fun with your pals over a large expansive new area.
Even though I know this wouldn't be used, what do you guys think? Would you like a mode such as this?
