noooooooo, i didnt say they are slightly different. i said they were alot different! :D
But not fundamentally different.
The Carbine fires one bullet at a time at full power. You are taking a gamble, either you hit, or you miss. But if you hit, you know for a fact that you will be getting your money's worth in damage.
The Battle Rifle fires three bullets at a time at 1/3 power. You are reducing the risk with this weapon, as chances are one of the three bullets will hit your opponent. But the problem is, if you hit, you won't neccesarily do as much damage as the carbine would if the other two bullets miss.
But despite these hugely different mindsets, both guns occupy the same niche of medium ranged weaponry.
So, really, they can be viewed as slight differences. The average player doesn't even think about them. They just decide to use one gun over the other depending on personal preferences and just roll with it.
And the AR isn't exactly supposed to be compared to the Plasma Rifle. It is a long story, but to summarize, the AR is the midpoint between the Spiker and the SMG and has average traits of both the extremes. The plasma rifle not only does more shield damage than flesh damage, but when you begin to fire it fires more like a spiker, then the AR, then the SMG as it begins to overheat.
