Subject: Halo Pistol Project in 3D

About 3 weeks ago I started working on a futuristic bullet in CAD for the Halo 3 team im on called; Vulgarity from 2old2play.com. Ive been a Sr Designer for automotive & aerospace going on 10 years and Ive been into graphic design for about 8 yrs, so I felt this project would just be something simple and fun to mix and meld my skills from my real job to my, fun graphic design side. Once I started the bullet i figured i need a case to house the futuristic bullets in. it didnt take very long before I started to add more detail and more detail. After about a week i had completed the futuristic bullet and case concept, and i thought it came out great, but was still missing something.

So I got the bright idea that i needed a gun to tie it all together. My first thought was a 357 COP Derringer, but while it looked cool, it wasnt futuristic enough.
So i then turned my attention to the Halo CE Pistol. I thought, hmm, i could do that. So it started, i had tons of images for reference and i thought this should be easy, well i was wrong. I had no dimensions just images, so everything i modeled, i had to do visually look at and try to get the scale right. It was harder then i thought. i wanted to add a little flair to the gun in certain spots as i was modeling it. The gun itself was fun to do, but very time consuming. The program i use to render my 3D CAD is called Hypershot, and in order to apply colors and materials to things, they each need to be a separate part, so i basically had to build every single piece in a giant assembly in order to be able to apply the materials and colors correctly. This was one of the things that ended up taking a lot of time on the gun.

I had to model the trigger, the rubber grip, the gun stock, the magazine, the screws, lights, laser site, the slide on top thats connected to the laser site, and the bullet ejection cover plate. It was a lot to do and put detail into every little piece.

My final task this week was finishing up the gun stock, the main part of the gun. In my early renders my edges were very hard and Mrs Doublefire suggested i put a break edge to smooth it out (basically radii or fillet's). This actually worked to my benefit as i wanted to blend the front handle of the gun into the nose anyway, but would need it to be blended. The blending task took about 2 days, just a very time consuming task trying to get them to look right at the intersection.

So 3 weeks later I have finally finished my little project, what started out a simple futuristic bullet project turned into the massive renders you see below.

The 3D CAD software I used to create my models is: Pro-E Wildfire 3
The 3D Rendering Software is called: Hypershot

How can I say awesome in every single language? This is simply the best Graphical work that I've witnessed in my life!

Now if we could put this into Reach's graphics...

Is there any chance I could get an image of the wire-frame with a black background? I would like to use that as a desktop wallpaper.

  • 11.03.2009 1:59 PM PDT

no problem, i did 2 for you both in black, both in D size with 300 dpi, right click and save, if you try to open them they wont, the file size is to big

Maybe I will never be
All the things that I wanna be
But now is not the time to cry
Now's the time to find out why
I think you're the same as me
We see things they'll never see
You and I are gonna live forever

Damn!
Thats awesome!

I can open the first black render, but the second one displays nothing.

Wow, incredible work!!
I'm using one of the final renders as my wallpaper right now.

Any other projects you're working on?
If so, I can't wait to see what you come up with.

Brilliant.
I can imagine the amount of work you must have put in. I admire the dedication you and others like you have.

Amazing.

the project im in the middle of is the human sniper rifle for H3. im going to make ammo for that as well.

its taking a bit though, because im busy making tons and tons of small component pieces for it.

  • 11.03.2009 3:43 PM PDT

I really like what you did, it is so amazing, no matter what adjectives I use, they cannot describe the work you have done. My only qualm is the yellow dots on the rear sights for the gun. Maybe make them green? (This is just preference, yellow is one of my least favorite colors).

And once you make one bullet, can you just copy them or do you have to make each individual one?

How do you go from the un-rendered versions to the rendered ones?

Is CAD free? I would love to start 3D modeling myself.

You should consider developing these rounds in real life.

And finally, you should do other Halo weapons. Covenant Carbine anyone?

Hmm, I know plenty of 3d modeling communities that model the halo 3 pistol all the time...

Can't you place the image in the background to help with the dimensions?

  • 11.03.2009 4:13 PM PDT

@TW InKoGnIto
thanks for the comments, i used yellow because of the images i saw has it as yellow. otherwise i would have gone with another color.

As for Cad programs, they are not free. Pro-e Wildfire is very expensive, about 4 grand for a seat for 12 months, if your a student in college though, you can get a student copy of solidworks or pro-e for just over 120 bucks.

Hypershot which is the render program i used is about 800 bucks.

@ Buggy Virus
first i would need an image that was at 100% scale, then i would need a conversion program to be able to import the image into cad, which would be useless because it wouldnt be 3 dimensions.
the only program im aware of that might bring an image into cad fairly decent is solidworks, but even then, its just a picture on a 2d plane. i would need 3 planes for x, y, and z.
Since ive never in my life seen 3 view straight on in all 3 planes mentioned above, the images would be useless.

what i did with this was i used my bullets as a reference, my bullets had a Diameter of .50 inch, so i started with the barrel of the gun and scaled everything from there. So essentially this version of the Halo CE pistol fire's medium to long range 50 caliber bullets.

I dont know if bungie has ever released actually dimensions or even rough ones, but it would be nice to have overall's
my gun is about 10.5 inches long by 2 inches thick in some places. if thats accurate then sweet, if not, well i did the best i could.

Oh wow, that is expensive.

If being to scale worries you, the Halo Magnum is a .50 cal pistol, or 12.7 cm.

On sandbox, each blue square is 10x10 meters, so you can place the pistol in a square, and determine it's length.

Welcome to the town of "Diligence." I'm Mayor Due.

1st off, fantastic work! Thats the coolest thing I've seen in a while.

2nd, I hope you don't mind but I took the final render for a desktop. You picked my Halo Avatar symbol, and I had to have it. Deadly!

Woah. This, is, epic. Honestly, you must be some sort of genious or something to do this. You should make a Master Chief! You have the skill of somone who has worked in the profesion for their entire life. You are truly talented my friend :D Bet bungie would take you.

you only have to make an object once, then when you put it all together in the final screen you just add multiple versions of it.

Is CAD free? I would love to start 3D modeling myself.

there are free 3D design programmes out there, but i do not know any CAD programmes for free. the most popular free 3D modelling programme is Blender, which you can get from this website however this programme works very differently to programmes like Pro Engineer, which are designed for industrial use in creating products. Blender is like a programme called Maya that is used by the Bungie team to create the models used in the game.

will external renderers work for Pro Desktop in the same way that they work for Pro Engineer?

do you do any work using 3D modelling programmes such as 3DSmax or Maya? I find that they're much easier to create complex shapes with and also for rendering.

I was gonna submit it myself if you weren't going to.

Nice work.

Wow nice hypershot renders, I was going to get hypershot but was wondering if twilight would be better!
Anyway some nice modeling especially for CAD! My only crit is the magazine looks too thin and you should but some hand grooves in the handle (or whatever its called on a gun???)

Can you make bump maps for textures in you CAD modeler by the way or just flat colors and materials?

Nice to see some 3D around here we need moreeeeee!

  • 11.04.2009 12:25 PM PDT

ive messed around with 3ds max, but never really got into it.
it works a lot differently then pro-e or ug or catia or solidworks.

i believe people use 3ds and maya and use hypershot, im not sure how it works for assemblies.

in hypershot you can add/change the bump map on the material/color. I havent advanced that far in hypershot as ive only had it a couple weeks.

im hoping the sniper rifle im working on ill be able to maximize the textures in hypershot.
Maybe the HD version of hypershot will apply them better.

yes the magazine does appear to look a little on the thing side now that you mention it.

thanks for all the feedback everyone.

yer some HDMI lighting would look great! You should add a metallic texture with scratches on to make the pistol look a bit more used!
Sniper rifle cant wait to see it>

  • 11.04.2009 1:18 PM PDT

yeah if you scroll in my blog to earlier renders of the gun, i actually had put a brushed aluminum on there that looked great
my final renders i decided on chrome. more because of the way it reflects.

but with the sniper rifle textures seem more critical, like on the scope, the rubber isnt smooth, its got like a grain to it. so getting that exact will prove challenging.
