Right now, for normal use on games, 4GB is outrageous - but not if you do 3D, audio, or video work. That can require over 2GB easily.

2GB gives games a lot of room to swim in - they like that ;)

Like what SLD said.
Look at Battlefield if you have 512 MB ( :-( i do ) you're screwed when you try to play it. But with a gig or even 2 gigs, you'll be the pimp of the whole game. 4 gig is just obsolete. Pretty much you know every game will work now.

Two AMD Athlon 64 FX-55 procs on seperate Alienware X2 motherboards with four ATI Radeon X850 512 and two Creative Labs Audigy 2 ZS Platinum Pro cards and 4GB of ultra-low-latency GDDR3 SDRAM on eight 512MB sticks. Everything is clocked to 5GHz and cooled with some automotive components: A four-pump dual-circuit glycol system with "ice-chest" and R-114A compressors. Runs XP Pro 64-Bit Beta.

Just kidding!

It's a piece-of-crap 1999 Dell Dimension 8200 with...

It hurts me to say this...

nVidia GeForce 2...

MX!

what is considered low latency RAM

high speed, low lag.

not what halo is when it comes to online play.

i don't know the exact types of ram, but here's a few fast ones off the top of my head:
DDR2
DDR
RDRAM

the fastest of all memory: onboard processor cache

Latency for RAM...you can read up on it if you do a google search...

But it's the amount of time for certain RAM operations to prepare to happen, based on clock cycles. The lower the latency, the better performance, because you want the RAM to work as fast as you can.

Lowest available is 2-2-2-5 right now.

I wonder if I could build a pirate 35-nanometer chip factory in my basement and "print" a giant superconducting computer on a single die, with synthetic diamond heat/calculation transistors... (Combination computer/Peltier-junction.) 64 cores with two threads each clocked to 10GHz or more with 256GB-memory and 9.472TB-drive-space of extremely-low-latency GDDR3/XDR RDRAM on-die!

Dream on, Wagovan...

i think that computer alone would start the end of the world by melting the polar ice caps and raising sea level, therefore killing people on coastlines.
