Subject: Halo Reach first cutscene intro

We got Jackals in the courtyard!

I think it would be pretty cool to start Reach off like this.

You see a group of marines talking. The game flashes into first person mode, and it moves around and you hear yourself and your buddies talk. you look up at some motion and see a covenant cruiser come out of slipspace. you scream to your sergeant and radio in.

Phantoms and Spirits are dropping Covenant all around you. you pull out your MA5B and start off to a group of civilians.

You then take control of the marine. you are in a linear enclosed space with only one way to go. the health system could be similiar to ODST's, but no recharge.

anyway, a large number of elites come down, and you either kill them and move on into a bunker and the H:Reach intro starts, or they kill you and the H:Reach intro starts.

Also, if they kill you, you don't die right away, you could go down on the ground and wait for them to slowly advance upon you. you pull out or M6C (or whatever pistol they put in Reach) and fire once at the elite. it takes the hit square in the chest, and its shields flair up. He laughs, then drives his energy sword into you, then screen fades out.

If you make it to the Bunker with civilians then you just breathe heavy and tell everyone to stay calm, while you hear explosions and stuff outside as the screen slowly fades.

I think this would add scope and drama to the campaign, and i think that it would be cool to be that immersed into the fall of Reach.

Any thoughts?

Considering the Covenant first fought in space before the ground assault.

maybe so but in the trailer as soon as they reported the covenant the planet was bombarded. Maybe tweak the idea a little bit but it could still work. Maybe instead of a marine it could be like a police officer, lik the ones in NMPD.

Maybe you could be trying to stop riots and THATS when the covenant attack.

That's just a teaser. The Covenant fought in space for a few hours and then glassed the planet later.
Marines are boring to play as anyway :)

Go away.

Good Imagination.
But. . . Does it matter? :)

Well in that case, it's an alright idea but I'd rather see an into involving Spartans.

nah it doesn't really matter, I just thought itd be cool.

watch out, CoD reference!!!
in CoD4 when you finish the American campaign, and the city is nuked, you crawl out of your destroyed helicopter and onto the ground into a burned city, where you sit for like 20 seconds and then die.
I always thought that was just pretty cool, good story telling.

I actually really like this idea. It can be considered more of a prologue. Not all prologues start at the beginning, but sometimes a more meaningful moment later on, that can or cannot be reiterated later in the bulk of the story.

Personally, I think for the marine to run over to civilians to calm them is a little weak. Maybe if no matter what, you got shot down and the elite approached... kind of like Megaman X style, when you'd be taken out by whats-his-name in the first level.

I would think this marine should be anonymous to an extent, considering he dies in the beginning. If he were someone important, then a lot of the plot is spoiled from the beginning.

Granted, we already know Reach falls, but Bungie has an opportunity to expand the plot more towards characters we are still unaccustomed to.

I think this can absolutely immerse players. I still remember when I played as the marine and got taken out by that nuclear bomb in Call of Duty 4. That was intense!

*EDIT* Damn, Casey beat me to the punch.

lol we both thought the same thing :)

maybe he (or she) wouldnt help the civilians or something just an idea, but a small little segment like that could be cool i think.

Maybe if when the -blam!- hits the fan, the marine would walk against a crowd of civilians, freaking out and running away. The marine would essentially be approaching the explosions and invaded area to investigate what the matter is. Then, upon getting close enough, there would be an explosion that knocks the marine down. This would then set in motion the scene where the elite approaches.

Essentially, you have control over the marine while walking into the crowd, and minimal control (aim and shooting of the gun) while knocked down. The end-result remains. The aiming portion can be reminiscent to the end of Call of Duty 4 *SPOILER ALERT*

... when you aim your gun while knocked down and shoot that head terrorist.

There would be some freedom of movement for the player up until they cross the checkpoint that triggers the explosion.

I loved the idea, and something similar would be great, but this dude is right.

Yeah, he's right the Covenant first fought in space, but that is entirely irrelevant. We're talking the intro acting as a prologue. In many best-selling books and some movies we have a prologue that takes place slightly later on than when the plot actually begins. In this case, taking place slightly later upon hitting the button to play Campaign.

I'm thinking upon turning on the game the first time, before you even hit the main menu. Maybe this can be every time, except after playing through it once, you can press start and skip over it.

Thank you sir, that was an epic rendition of this topic.

and how!

I would personally love to see something like this!

Of course, it would need to fit with the canon of the Battle of Reach. Were this to happen canoncially...the only thing the Marine would be able to do would be to fire their MA5B at the ships in orbit.

Obviously with great effect.

  • 11.03.2009 9:04 PM PDT

That would be an awesome intro

I dont know about the intro, but i know what would be an awsome epilouge.

Regular marines are boring. That's the norm for the FPS genre these days. Playing as a SPARTAN not only makes you feel like a badass, it's just a more enjoyable experience. I loved ODST, but the normal person perspective made it slightly less appealing. If you were playing as a SPARTAN i think it would be much better. Although i have to say i think bungie knows what they're doing. It's probably best to leave the story telling up to them

  • 11.03.2009 9:47 PM PDT

What if during that opening scene if you can make it back to the bunker and your trying to calm the civilians you look out the window and five spartans go running by to turn the tide of the battle.

Or if you want the marine to die then maybe right after he gets stabbed a sniper round flies through the elites head and the marine with his last movement looks over to see a spartan in the distance.

I think that this could make it really dramatic and also get you pumped to get behind the controls of the spartans.

I wish I was still legendary.

You had my hopes up when I first saw this.

Regardless, I like your intro a bit. There are bits that could be improved, but overall it seems solid; However, I'm reasonably sure Bungie will already have come up with and created an introduction by now.

  • 11.04.2009 12:51 AM PDT

Maybe something similar, yes. It wouldn't have any affect on the Spartans' drop onto Reach, which is good.

The only problem, is that Reach is a military base. I really doubt that there would even be any civilians to save...

=)

Rather creative. I like the sound of it.

  • 11.04.2009 2:57 AM PDT

I like the idea of rushing through the civilians, as normal people are generally non existant within the halo universe. For example the streets of New Mombossa should have been littered with dead civilians but not a single one, apparently we're supposed believe everyone was evacuated after six hours.

What if, taken from the intro I already mentioned... when the marine is knocked down by the explosion, as the Elite approaches, wielding the energy sword, about to drive it into the marine, suddenly the Elite is taken out by a clip from an Assault Rifle.

As the Elite falls dead, you see a Spartan behind him, of whom was responsible for killing the Elite; then the marine goes into a daze and blacks out.
