Okay my idea is to make the HUD much more like it seems in the book. I loved the map in-helmet idea in ODST and how you can still get attacked while looking at it or listening to audios. I say we, the community, ask bungie to take this further. In case Reach is a free-roam or big mapped you should have to use it to see

and more if they are available during gameplay. Updates like those popups that told you that Srg. Johnson is a preorder bonus can be HUD popups. You should have Maps of every MP map at a certain button and MAYBE have like an optional long-raged radar probably turned off in MP but usable in customs for some matches.
It should also have the damage effects like when you have the VISR on and at times it gets static and can get stunned by hammer and maybe even be locked by PP (probably not) Melees can have a small effect on your view, maybe a little static or double vision. Drainers can create lots of distortion in HUD as well.
Some sort of new lighting system would be nice as well and things like the score and pause screen should actually FEEL like they are coming from your helmet, like maybe a animation of them forming or anything like that to give you the illusion that you are seeing everything from that Spartan's helmet.
Sword/Knives should make a slash across your screen, bullets can make things get blurry and plasma can make things fluctuate. If there is a health system, once your health is low your HUD can begin malfunctioning and fluctuating/blurring on it's own.
The blurring is in comparison of Fallout 3's vision when you get your head crippled. Explosions/rockets should keep you in first-person for a second and just make it crazy, like all white and static then go to third of you swimming in the air!
Hopefully some of these ideas are popular enough to make it in!

A great idea! Everytime you pick up a weapon it does a small sort of quick scan on any area of the screen.
This gave me a new idea too. This is a seperate idea and doesn't seem very tangible but I like it:
When you go in your HUD you cycle through it like RB and LB, there are areas to see your recent games and scores. PERHAPS a small theater mode (far-fetched).
Plus it can be home to loads of tutorials, for each thing. Serves as a little manual, you can read up on character profiles which you unlock in campaign (maybe). Such as

Unlocked by meeting him or playing until his death or anything. It can have small info on vehicles and AI as well! It can open up loads of Achievment ideas too!)

For example, maybe you look at the SMG, on the corrners of your hud, you would see SMG, Attack Power say 50 Speed 200,Accuracy 20. Or somthing like that.
