Master Chief never went to the surface of Reach with the red team during the Battle of Reach. He went with the blue team to a navigation sattelite to destroy a computer that did not wipe itself. If said computer was recovered by the Covenant, they would know where Earth was. This mission took him about 15 minutes, and then he returned to the Pillar of Autumn which jumped to Halo, beginning Halo CE.
Why make a videogame focusing on a character who did about 15 minutes worth of fighting?
The best way to make Reach be original and interesting is to focus on five currently unknown spartans that were part of the red team of spartans that fought to protect the generators on Reach. As the book didn't focus on them, their identies and their ultimate demise are unknown, so you are welcome to do all sorts of crazy encounters to make up the videogame without breaking away from the canon of the book.
So no, we won't be playing as any spartans that we know by name in Reach.
You assume so much. So what if MC didn't fight on the ground, that doesn't mean we won't play as him at all. Perhaps each character on the banner represents a different squad we play as. There, we could play as MC and the unknown Spartans in Reach. It's not always one way or the other. We Can have the best of both ideas.
