NO! first strike happend after the events the are happening in Halo: Reach...

They were talking about the book First Strike no OPERATION First Strike which also details Red Teams story on Reach.

If by next-gen you mean crappy, dark and colorless, I agree. It doesnt look next-gen at all.

First Strike actually talks more about the Fall of Reach than the book "Fall of Reach" does. Takes place, during and after the Battle for Reach.

In halo fall of reach the novel there were only 150 Spartan I I s. Spartan I s didn't have suits w/ visors, and Spartan I I I s didn't exist yet.

I used to get on these forums back in the Halo 1, anticipating Halo 2 days...I'm back :)

Being in the Army, Sierra is S in the phonetic alphabet. Sierra could mean anything that starts with an S. But when they say, "SPARTANs on the ground" it pretty much gives away that they are SPARTANs... The OPs logic is flawed if they think anything in there indicated there are more than 150 SPARTANs in the game.

S-III already existed but i wouldn't count on them being in Halo Reach.

As for the 150 Spartan count. Do they actually say that their numbers went up to 150? As far as we know they could have had more numbered kids. Then they reduced the number to 150 possible candidates which later they selected the 75.

Well it depends if you're talking about the Battle of Reach or just the book. 150 Spartans were chosen and that number was then but to 75 and then only 33 survived the Augmentation. During the Battle there were around 25 Spartans fighting. Spartan III project began in 2531 so they definitely existed during Reach.

What BTE said ^^ :)

I'm almost certain, that after the relative success of the First SPARTAN II Program, Dr. Hasley drafted another group of SPARTAN II's (Read, not SPARTAN III'S)
This could be the reason why there is SPARTAN 259.
Also, may I recommend going to Halopedia, and searching SPARTAN 259, I'm pretty sure they have a page dedicated to him.

Wherever you roam
so far from home
you'll be safe from peril
life threatening and terrible
if you avoid David Powel
and keep track of your towel.

This can be resolved very simply:

S-259 and S-320 are Spartan-IIs from Class 2.

ONI didn't want Halsey involved in their training at all so they let someone else handle it, faked supporting her for a little bit, then cut most of her funding.

The second class of Spartan II's was canceled.
Also, Halopedia is not a valid source of info especially when it comes to Sierra 259 and Sierra 320.

Class 2 was never started. In Ghosts of Onyx, it mentions that with Hasley's strict genetic group needed, there were not enough candadites for the second class. That's why Mendez is available to train the Spartan IIIs.

Edit: @Ksychutrya: Actually, the books are canon. And if they forgot the books, then where would we be? A game with a bunch of fighting and violence and no plot. Sorry, but there are too many of those these days, not in the mood for another.

93% of statistics are lies. Formerly Xfire Grunt. Unfortunately, you can't change the WLID for your BNET account, so I had to create an alternate account. My other WLID was spam city (and it was my e-mail account too).

Nobody ever said everything in the books was 100% canon. I would rather Bungie make Halo:reach and ignore the books and make it a better game.

That funding most likely went to the Spartan III program.

Bungie confirmed that the books are definitely canon. It would be stupid to ignore the books completely. Sure they don't have to follow the storyline of Fall of Reach or First Strike but they do have to follow the timeline of things if that makes sense?

Oh, Death was never enemy of ours!
We laughed, knowing better men would come,
And greater wars: when each proud fighter brags
He wars on Death, for lives: not men, for flags.

What Tucker said. By the way, do you have any idea how many pissed off fans Bungie would have if they just disregarded canon?

Tallahassee?
I spent two weeks in Tallahassee one night.

Read Ghosts of Onyx. Then Reread it. Then if you still have questions... quit at life

"Science without religion is lame. Religion without science is blind." - Albert Einstien

The biggest problem with saying there aren't higher numbers is that there were more than 150 spartan candidates, as in children. So if they were numbered before becoming Spartans the 150 Spartans could have been any combination of number designations.

  • 11.05.2009 7:46 PM PDT

ok this argument is pritty dumb everyone here should not post if u got ur info from the internet read the books, all of them and if u have to read them again carefully and pay attention most of the things we are fighting about in the forum could be solved if u read the books.

150 candidates
75 recruits
33 graduates

Seriously, it's not that hard.

300+ possible candidates?
150 final candidates
75...
33...

Or there could be just 150 different numbers.

"This is Sierra-259. You've got Spartans on the ground, sir. We're not going anywhere." Not Spartans. Right.

I can't believe how often we hear this.

Let's look at it in another way:

"this is squadron (or combat team sierra) 259. You've got Spartans on the ground, sir. We're not going anywhere."

hurr durr. The NATO word for S doesn't automatically mean Spartan.

Message me if you want, I will try to get back as soon as possible.

See you on the forums and in the games.

No one ever said the Spartans callsign and actual number had to be the same.

  • 11.05.2009 8:46 PM PDT

I think the most plausible theory so far is that they are Spartan II's from Class 2

True. In all, there were under 40 Spartan-IIs.

Sierra may be a callsign for a dropship, you know...
