Almost a ghost.

Didn't waste the time reading through the 4 pages, so I don't know if this has been mentioned yet, but anyone who read the books should know that they recieved their numbers when they were selected as candidates for the SPARTAN-II program, and there were well over 300 candidates selected. Not all of them survived the augmentation process, however.

Sierra doesn't mean Spartan.
**FacePalm**

how is that a facepalm? Sierra doesn't mean spartan, sierra means S. The reason eveyone thinks that Sirra 259 is a spartan is because the only time we've ever heard sierra ingame is when they refered to master chief.

which is why they use it here as well, to show us hes a spartan
im sure bungie realised that if they use sierra 117 (spartan 117) that if they use it again for sierra 259, people will think its a spartan - easy, hey? if they wanted it to be a pelican or squad they would have used a different word. like KILO 23 again or something else.

oh, and before you say "sierra doesn't mean spartan, it means S", i know, i went to the trouble of learning the nato phonetic alphabet

Ok, to the many people who are saying that it could be Spartan II Class IIs, but we just haven't seen them yet, I have just one thing to say. How could we have not seen them? The Spartan II Class Is graduated around 2525. If ONI trained another batch, they would have finished around 2535 (or so, not entirely sure). In that case, they would have had about 10 years of active service, which ONI would have wanted to display to the populace to boost morale. Unless the ONI for some reason didn't show the people how they were doing, they would have been seen by now. And before anyone says that they might have been trained later, unless they started training before Reach and the fighting on Reach was their first real mission, which is a very small possibility, they still would have had some missions. 6 years into their training, the Spartan II Class Is had already captured a major rebel leader and escaped from his massive base unscathed. That was at the age of 12. The only possible way that no one would have never seen Class IIs before would be, as I said before, if Reach waas their first and last mission.

Go ahead and argue, but just remember: ONI wants to boost morale however they can, so they woldn't cover up a second wave of Spartans.

Also, Sierra 259 and 320 are definitely not Spartan IIIs. Read Ghosts of Onyx and you'll understand.

Spartan 59 is dead. 59 was Malcom. If you've read First Strike you know he died when Red Team had to bail out of the Pelican in low orbit. He was pulverized on impact. Died when he hit the ground. So we dont play as Spartan 2-59, because he's dead.

First Strike is after the events of Fall of Reach. If the game is based on The Fall of Reach, like most people think it is, Malcolm would be alive.

However, to the people who are saying that he might be calling himself Sierra 2-59, they don't call themselves like that, if anything, he would say Sierra 2-059; that's just the way they say it.

Though I think that he might be a pelican pilot, refering to the fact that he has dropped off Spartans. He might just be using the formal 'We'. Sierra 320, on the other hand, not sure about, as only one pelican was sent to drop off the Spartans (Pretty sure).

Edit: Sorry, was he killed in the beginning of the book while it's still the fighting on Reach? If so, then forget what I said in the first paragraph.
Wrong. The events of First Strike that pertain to the Spartans on the ground at Reach take place at the same time as Halo CE. The jump they made takes place during the Chiefs mission to the Orbital Dock, as when they're getting ready to jump, you hear "too many of them falling back", which is what the spartans said. And as to the sierra comment, while it isn't fact, but generally in halos universe Sierra is for the Spartans use, Sierra 177 translates to Spartan 117. And there were only 150 candidates, of which only 75 were chosen, ranging from 1-150, so I dont know where the extra numbers are coming from, unless they're just making a game, and not basing it on the books.

Did you even notice the edit?

And how do you know that 'Generally' Sierra means Spartan? How many times have you seen it used to name a Spartan? To people who think that Bungie wouldn't want to trick us by using Sierra, I concur. Why wouldn't they want to trick us? It's more likely that they are trying to trick us, none of us are right, and they are currently reading all of our posts about these two mysterious people, laughing hysterically.

"This is Sierra-259. You've got Spartans on the ground, sir. We're not going anywhere." Not Spartans. Right.

i skipped ahead to say the exact same thing...john 117 doesnt mean there are 116 spartans before him running around..may only be a few, if any..some die during augmentation..some die during training..some die in combat.

Nobody ever said that there's more than 150 Spartans.

You'd think it will stop there.

And how do you know that 'Generally' Sierra means Spartan?
Sierra may mean a lot of things when used in different contexts, but in terms of Halo, why would it be anything else? Furthermore, while not definitive, the quote seems to show me that a Spartan is talking. They tell the commanders that they've got spartans on the ground, then they say "we're not going anywhere." The way it's phrased, to me anyway, implies that the spartans are telling them not to worry because they won't budge. How consoling would it be to know that a few humans are still alive on Reach and aren't going anywhere? Duh, the humans aren't going anywhere! They're getting their asses glassed! At least the spartans might be able to do something.

Just my opinion. I could be wrong, but the contexts screams spartan. Sure, Bungie could try to trick us, but it just doesn't seem to fit.
