Understand this principle:

People thought Star Trek communicators would come 200 years in the future.

The reality: They came rather early, plus we have video call now.

so how come 2001 was like, 8 years ago, and we STILL haven't made an artificial intelligence like HAL, or a starship capable of sending a crew of five to saturn?

if anything, the "pessimistic" movement is fairly new, and keep in mind that even up to the early 70's people thought that we wouyd have a permanent colony on the moon by now.

Now while your points are good, Noccifer, i really can't see the further use of ground forces in the distant future. although it would make sense for our troops in afghanistan right now to keep getting supplied with better hand-held weapons, that is basically an occupation scenario, as we are not fighting a standing army as of now. (i do understand that it not really an occupation, though, as the vast majority of Afghanis simply want to live in peace, and it's the 2% that ruin it for everybody else). This kind of guerilla warfare will not be around anymore in the 2500's, we could just bomb a planet instead of wasting good lives in the process of pacification. i do understand about H1 and how that was geurilla, but if it wasn't a sacred ring, the covies would have just glassed it and been done with it.

in concluison, i see 3 uses for handheld weapons in the 2500's:

-personal defense
-starship boarding/ship-to-ship combat
-guerilla warfare (but even the best geurilla army can be simply wiped out by a single plasma bombardment)
and possibly a 4th:
-assasination/commando insertion

Well think: The game has to be a little different. Otherwise it would be like Counterstrike where you die in like one hit from any weapon. Every weapon would be like the Halo 3 Hornet and Scorpion Tank, only packaged inside a weapon. It would be boring. And just because there are shields, doesn't mean they are immune to bullets.

This kind of belongs in the Universe Forum, or at least it seems to be traversing in that direction.

It is highly unlikely that by that time in the future we will still be using gas/explosive powered projectile weapons. Currently our military has in use laser weapons mounted on satelites, humvees, and airborn vehicles. This is not futurist sci fi, this is our current technology. The U.S. Navy has tested a railgun that accelerates a 3.2 kg projectile to seven times the speed of sound. Its only a matter of time before we are able to condense the technology enough to utilize laser and electro magnetic hand held weapons.

If you don't believe me do some research on laser weapons, cutters, rail guns, etc. We already have these weapons. I believe within this century they will become hand held.

That may very well be true, but keep in mind we do lack inertial dampening technology and therefore i fail to see rocket launcher being replaced by handheld railguns just for the simple fact that the physics are against you in development, for you would need to design some sort of inertial compensator to work on principle of impulse, and therefore something would have to spread the recoil impulse from the acceleration taking only milliseconds over a few seconds otherwise such weapons would blow our arms off, and railgun tech doesn't make any sense for calibers below 1 inch (2.5cm) and you still need to carry batteries AND the kinetic rounds.

Also on the topic of laser weapons, for a laser to do any sort of damage its energy impulse has to be within the 20kw or greater range and good luck getting any more than five pulses out of a capacitor the size of a car battery, the biggest problem over the last 10 years has not been our ability to create devices that can use and modulate that kind of energy, but it is the ability to store large amounts of electrical energy effectively.

The following was taken from a physics article on rail guns:

Large scale tests performed by the US Navy of a prototype rail gun involved a 3.35 Kg projectile with a muzzle velocity of 2520 meters/sec. This gives a momentum in excess of 8000 Kg-meters/sec, enough to send a 200 Kg rail gun backward at over 40 meters per second. A conventional gun with similar performance would require a massive and extensive recoil absorption apparatus. There is none needed with a rail gun.

You obviously have no idea what you are talking about in these matters. A railgun produces extremely low amounts of recoil when compared to conventional explosive weapons. That is because a rail gun works by creating electromagnetic currents to force a projectile to incredible speeds. In the majority of the designs the projectile will not even touch the barell when shot. There are several papers you should read to enlighten yourself, most of which are written by naval scientists.

It is evident that you have little to no knowledge about this subject so instead of citing various articles and papers on brakethroughs in laser technology and energy storage I will spend my time doing things more productive.

Please spend the time to know what you are talking about before you try to rebuttal for the sake of looking intelligent.

Also we are talking about an artillery sized railgun, and i believe its newtons third law, for every action there is an equal and opposite reaction, and yes, a railgun does provide a lower recoil impulse than that of a standard weapon for there is no expulsion of the gases from the detonation of whatever explosive gunpowder like compound that is used to accelerate the projectile.

This doesn't change the validity of my argument that the recoil on such a weapon in the 1in(2.5cm) or greater range (which would of course be used for antitank/antiaircraft roles only) would cause your limb to be blown off, hell, u can get close to that impulse with a Barret fifty. And also we have a long way to go before that big room of capacitors gets down to a size that could even make a man portable version of a railgun, and it doesnt change the validity of my argument that a dampener would be required, the only reason we can use such high caliber rockets for antitank without blowing our limbs off is due to the fact that the gases do not push against the rocket launcher tubes, but are expelled out the back, effectively creating a "recoiless" assembly, where the only force applied to the launcher is that of the rocket overcoming the friction inside the launch tube.

And also, another one of my earlier arguments was the fact that a railgun design would not be effective for small calibers because of the need to carry the battery pack to operate the magnetic coils AND the projectile, currently bullets are more compact to imply the same amount of damage

shields are state of the art tech stolen from covanent, so is laser, its not invented, its reverse engineer. so yes, they are still on guns, digital guns that is, a mere 200 years in teh future. do you realize how long it take s for advancements like that? people used swords for thousands of years.

Happily married to Fatal_Coin_Vest since July 1st, 2009.

Thank you, Captain K Mart.

You know, I always really love these threads. You assume that just because it's in the future, everything should be firing lasers and awesomeness. But the fact is, you don't know what the future holds. Nobody does. It can be made into whatever Bungie wants. And they clearly wanted to break from the mold of standard sci-fi games and make humans comparable to humans today.

Sure, they have slip-space and spartan armor. But first, what does space travel have to do with guns? Those are two completely unrelated fields of study. An advancement in one field does not automatically bring an advancement in the other. And two, the recharging shields of the Mjolnir armor wasn't created until the war with the Covenant started; the technology is based off of Elites' shields.
