Last Refuge - Operation Phoenix is in effect. From the ashes, we will rise.

I think that they will. I mean Halo 3's graphics are already pretty good.

Jesus loves you, but everyone else thinks you're a twat.

in some ways yes in some ways no. halo has always had bigger/more open levels so this means a lot more has to be "drawn" but this takes away the finer detail they can put into the level. kill zone has smaller levels so they are able to put more detail into that area with out it rendering to slow

What I would also like to see more is Halo in a more dark and depressing style, any one agree? I mean if you pay attention to the story (and I mean not just the games) Halo seems like it would be very dark and depressing, more gory too.

the game has one more year to go, so i dont think its gonna look like killzone 2 now, but at the end, maybe it may shatter expectations

It's "Gashnor", not "Gashner", there's an O in there.

Killzone 2 had amazing graphics, but they also had 50 gigs to use of disc space, Bungie has 8-10 gigs, BIG difference. I hope they just do what they do 'cause Bungie doesn't disappoint often.

Gameplay>Graphics IMO.

However, I think Reach can surpass KZ, because those people just make sprawly boxes for levels, which obviously makes it easier. The Halo 3 engine can already equal what they did visually speaking, but it was built for open, varied gameplay and has to take into account draw distance.

With a bit of modification and change of design you could basically remake KZ on H3 engine, but your performance would take a hit.

Personally, I think KZ was just a game made for show. Marketing strategies like these are some of the things that make the PS3 uninteresting to me at the moment. Graphics aren't everything. They help set the mood but that's it.

Since I started playing Halo, I have yet to find a game with higher quality gameplay, so for now I'm sticking with what I know obviously.

And who keeps posting these website articles where every single comment post bashes Xbox without even making a point? They're just sad...

I don't think so. But it will no doubt look good.

Speaking realistically, the PS3 does have better graphical capabilities.

From the pictures the guns look great and similar to Killzone but I don't think Bungie is trying to duplicate Killzone's graphics.

Good, bad, I'm the guy with the clichéd lines.

If they just used the Halo 3 engine for Halo Reach I would not have been upset. So any improvements is just icing on the cake.

That article makes pretty terrible comparisons to be honest.

Killzone 2 is a game with a MUCH smaller scale than Halo's, and to be quite honest, has a very simple engine.

Killzone's effects are rendered with low-res framebuffers, the models are quite low poly, and the color palette is muted to allow more headroom. Killzone 2 however has some pretty good AI, and their normalized rendering techniques (motion blur in particular) give the game THAT much more atmosphere and life. Their use of screen space ambient occlusion in combination with their deferred lighting model created some fairly convincing shadows.

Now, the comparison is moot because those shots were taken from what looks like an ALPHA build of the game. UI looks unfinished, and environments look simple; obviously assets from previous games are being used as placeholders while new content is being created. Do not jump to conclusions with these spills!

Destiny awaits. And it will be great.

I would assume that the graphics will be comparable to (and likely better than) Gears 2, even.

Considering that Halo is Microsoft's baby and essentially its flagship franchise, I see no reason for Microsoft to invest stingily in the development of the game. In fact, I think it's quite likely that the graphics engine will be incredible compared to Halo 3's.

Not exactly.

Working with the RSX is a HUGE pain in the ass because the hardware only has a 128-bit bus to communicate with everything else.

What does this mean? Well, fill-rate and pixel shading are the main issues with developing playstation 3 games. This is the reason you see a LOT of games on the PS3 running at sub-HD resolutions. It's simply easier to run a game where there are less pixels to fill at any given time.

So there you have it. The PS3 has pretty good hardware - the communication between the GPU and CELL is just really slow, making development on the system quite a challenge.

Warning: You may find that my, or someone else's opinion does not comply with yours. Side effects of disagreement may include (but are not limited to): flaming, irrational behavior, broken keyboards, and/or nervous sweats. If you experience any of these symptoms refrain from communicating with others until the symptoms have subsided.

Comparing the graphics of two games is a touching issue, as is comparing the gameplay. Sometime a game clearly looks good, other times it just doesn't look right and is obviously not up to par with the current generation.

Videogames are about creativity, it is hard to compare two GOOD games. I love Halo, but I also love plenty of other games, different styles should be appreciated. With Borderlands out now we can all see the unique appearances games can have while still having that level of quality.

That being said, Bungie is all about quality and will make the game look the best they can. Although Reach may not look like Killzone 2 or Uncharted 2 it should be noted that no two games should look the same.

Whether or not the game will look "as good" as these games I guess we will have to wait and see, however, I believe Reach will look amazing, and the community will be pleased.

I know that PS3 is probably the hardest platform to develop on, but what is a normal bus speed? 256-bit or what?

The Xenos in the 360 runs 256-bit.

This is bungie's last halo game. I think there going to pull out all kinds of crazy crap. I mean they could touch up on there ingame faces. That is the only improvment they need.

  • 11.06.2009 9:22 PM PDT

Probably something close, although hopefully better art. Killzone 2 gets pretty monotonous in design. Some levels, in particular the demo level (uh...what's that called!) look really neat. Some....not so much.

But in truth, as far as tech things go, I want 3 main things
- Incredible physics (including water, general movement of objects, etc.)
- Good lighting -- you can look like crap, but with good lighting you can really set the mood
- Good particle effects-- you guys honestly have no clue how much this helps because they're constantly in motion. Reason why I value them is because these too help set the mood.
