My problems [with Reach] are basically just full parties, mlg, and people who go out of their way not to get killed.

That depends on the melee in Reach. It is likely Reach will support knives, but how to make knives different than a Covenant Energy Sword?

There will probably be a different melee, so in turn you can assume a different melee system entirely.

Mutual beatdowns do not really annoy me. It is better than the old system, IMO.

Based on the banner, it is more likely than not. That is my evidence. What is yours?

  • 11.06.2009 10:22 PM PDT

His evidence would probably be the fact that in previous Halo Games, Melee has been without the use of knives.

I'm not saying he is wrong because at this point he is just as right as I am. I'm just saying a knife is in the banner and I do not think it would be there for decoration.

The banner is art. Not a screenshot. Not a video of gameplay. Just because a character is holding a knife does not mean that there will be wieldable knives in the game.

If you think about it, a knife is nothing but an ammoless spiker. Sure, it does 72 points of melee damage instead of the usual 70, but it is so insignificant that it pretty much is unnoticiable.

I don't know about you, but I'd rather have a gun that I can use to kill someone in two melees than a wimpy knife that has no range and also takes two melees to kill someone.

The spartans are so strong that adding a blade does not change the lethality of their melee attacks much.

There is a good reason they didn't put a machete into Halo CE. Or Halo 2. Or Halo 3. Or Halo 3: ODST. Why give in and put in a worthless weapon now?

  • 11.06.2009 10:32 PM PDT

yeah it would be nice to knife people during a melee, without it actually being a stand alone weapon of course.

The CQB chest has s knife for decoration. lol

No, it's not a screenshot of gameplay, but Bungie would not take the time to put a knife there for no reason.

A knife may be pointless due to the strength of a Spartan melee, but who hasn't wanted to jab a knife in the neck of an Elite? I have wanted to do that since Halo: CE.

And due to the fact we know very little about Reach right now, it goes back to my first post in this thread about how the melee may be very different.

Likely? No. But it's possible.

"The CQB chest has a knife for decoration"
The CQB chest was never used as a game announcement. The knife is in the banner, the only (legit) image we have from the game so far.

A screenshot? No, but probably the cover of the game.

It's a sillohette. Of a knife. I consider myself terrible at art, but even I could erase the knife in paint and draw one that looked pretty much the same efforlessly. I did it just now. In fact, it's beautiful. I wish I could show you. I gave it a slight curve too. And made it jagged. Like that one saw item that you get in Legend of Zelda Ocarina of Time from that forest chick which you give to the carpenter dude during the Bigoron sword quest. So excellent! All in five seconds.

If Reach is Perk based then, maybe a knife perk 1 hit kill.

Speculation

All I'm saying is Bungie thought about it. They knew they were putting a knife in it. We know pretty much nothing about the game.

It could be a knife.
It could be a small stick that unfolds into a baseball bat that we use to beat the skulls of Grunts in.

We have no idea at this point.

Is it safe to say there won't be energy swords in the game?

Elites are likely to be the main enemy in this game. I'm sure there will be swords.

Energy swords are a different matter than knives entirely.

Elites will be in Reach, so energy swords will be in Reach too.

Its not confirmed though, but its one of those obvious things that you don't need confirmation on.

There hasn't been a single Halo game that didn't include Energy Swords (other than ODST, but there aren't any living Elites in that game either). Why wouldn't Reach have them?

In the days of old, there were legends of a land long lost to time. This land was known as Ranna'Mor. Ranna'Mor was said to contain in its borders 7 warriors. These warriors had once unleashed a veritable hell upon the ancient world, until they were locked away. My name is Toriad, and I am one of those warriors. Our return is approaching. Do not run away, do not cower in fear; take solace in your final days, for that is all we can do. -Legend of Ranna'Mor

I hope they keep the current melee system. I don't know about you, but I hated hitting the melee button and then dieing. The double death works, and it should be kept.

Fair enough.

...Though I must admit that my Spartan wielding a curved carpenter's saw is pretty sweet.

Wasn't the energy sword unusable until H2 so since reach takes place before that time...
You are thinking solely in story, not in game mechanics. Yes, the game takes place before H1, but the game mechanics will only get better, no down grade. The chances of Bungie removing the energy sword is unlikely, due to its popularity with players.

No. No. No.

Please understand. The reason that the sword was wieldable in Halo 2 and not Halo CE is really simple. Bungie either didn't think of or didn't have enough time to put a wieldable sword in Halo CE. In Halo 2, they decided to put in a wieldable sword, and so it was.

It's not like the covenant magically made all their swords wieldable overnight after their defeat at the first Halo.

Don't confuse the two things.
