Wasn't the energy sword unusable until H2 so since reach takes place before that time...
You are thinking solely in story, not in game mechanics. Yes, the game takes place before H1, but the game mechanics will only get better, no down grade. The chances of Bungie removing the energy sword is unlikely, due to its popularity with players.
What he is saying doesn't really have to do with removing it, but rather in the game, Energy Swords weren't usable. That may have an effect on whether Energy Swords will be available in reach, or not. You have to think of how Halo CE was, and go even less technological than that.

At Forge-Union, I received this comment:
For clarification, the fact that some weapons are not available in the first game is pretty simple. For UNSC weapons, the Pillar of Autumn had just undergone a partially completed refit and resupply, and the main armory was hit while trying to land on Halo.
For Covey weapons, the ships at Halo were there for survey and exploration, not combat. So only basic weapons, and dropships for that matter, were available.

If this quote is true, than the Energy Sword may appear on Reach because their whole armada will be there, not to scout but to destroy. Or...it could be something else.

It is likely Reach will support knives,

No, actually no it probably won't.

Based on the banner, it is more likely than not. That is my evidence. What is yours?
Little Steel dagger vs. Spartan Armor. Dagger FTL.

And the blades on the Spiker are supposed to be any different?
Definitely. They were made by Brutes, so their daggers are different than human daggers. Now, if it was an Energy dagger, that may be different.

The banner is art. Not a screenshot. Not a video of gameplay. Just because a character is holding a knife does not mean that there will be wieldable knives in the game.

If you think about it, a knife is nothing but an ammoless spiker. Sure, it does 72 points of melee damage instead of the usual 70, but it is so insignificant that it pretty much is unnoticiable.

I don't know about you, but I'd rather have a gun that I can use to kill someone in two melees than a wimpy knife that has no range and also takes two melees to kill someone.

The spartans are so strong that adding a blade does not change the lethality of their melee attacks much.

There is a good reason they didn't put a machete into Halo CE. Or Halo 2. Or Halo 3. Or Halo 3: ODST. Why give in and put in a worthless weapon now?
To add to the argument for no knife. Why does Buck not use his knife in ODST in actual gameplay? That and the Brute weapons with blades on them.

How the hell a blade can only cause 2 points more damage than blunt AR?

The blade damage bonus should be a lot higher. That would make knife useful

how about knives taking a grenade slot instead of a weapon slot, and make them as powerful as normal melee, but with a sword style dash. so it is better than normal melee, but worse than a sword

I hope momentum melees return in Reach. Basically, if you're standing still and melee, you do some damage. If you're run and melee, you do more damage. And if you jump and melee, you do the most damage.

In Halo 1 and 2, it worked like this:

Standing + Melee = 3 hit kill

Running + Melee = 3 hit kill

Jumping + Melee = 2 hit kill

Now, there's a lot more to it, especially in Halo 2. If you jumped + melee with the Brute Shot or Objective Item (Flag, bomb, etc) in Halo 2, it would be an instant kill.
