I think Halo 3 honestly had too many different gametypes.

The solution: More gametypes!

Let me explain: IMO, if they wanted so many things that were so similar, they should have made a more flexible system and use a variant from there as a Gametype. Let me explain:

A) First, we separate gametypes in categories:

1. Kill: Slayer, Team Slayer, Rockets, Swords, etc.
2. Item: Assault, CTF, Oddball, etc.
3. Terrain: King of the Hill, Territories, etc.
4. Person: Juggernaut, VIP, etc.

Like this, it`s much cleaner and easier to understand.

Second, within these categories, we allow options across all gametypes:

For instance:

Let's say I want to make a game that uses an ITEM.

First, I`d choose either FFA, Attack/Defense, Teams or Neutral Item. I'll Pick Neutral Item for this one.

Then, I'll set the objective: Acquire Item for instance. You could tell the game from here to give a point to whoever picked up the item, or their team, or end the round or whatever. But I'm going to add an objective.

This new objective is: Bring the item to your base. Again, you select what effect this has. Maybe it give you a point and respawns all weapons on your team's side of the map. Whatever you want.

From there on, I think you get the chain of ideas.

B) Mix and Match!

I want to be able to use several gametypes at once to create my own unique gametype.

For instance: A team Oddball game where each team has a VIP and only the VIP can take the ball.

Or: An FFA Capture the Flag game where you have to plant your own flag in an enemy's base to prevent them from respawning for the round. Enemies can wait around your flag to send it back to your base after a progress bar is complete.

Or: Bring Race back from Halo 1 using territories and where only a VIP can drive his team to victory, while the others ride on a passenger Warthog trying to take out the enemy drivers.

Or: A Team Slayer game where you cannot respawn and where a VIP has stronger defenses, but each kill by him allows a teammate to be revived.

There's an infinity of possibilities.

Do you want to see this happen? We could even add Firefight to those 4 mentionned categories and make games where NPC monsters spawn as hazards. Or use them to create mini-campaigns.

Holy -blam!-, an actual good idea in the Reach forum. I like it. An Oddball/VIP game would be terrible imo, but the potential is there for some amazing games.

I like it. I mean, it would add a lot more, like you said, to the already huge Halo Custom Games Community. As long as Bungie didn't over do it. To make it good, they would have to make it easy to understand, yet a person could do a lot with it. I would be down for this.

Just an example obviously, but yeah, it could potentially spawn a cool Gametype side-community to Forge.

Yeah, I do think it would be amazing to have. Something like a CTF game with a Slayer component to it. Maybe once you get to 3 caps the first team to 25 kills wins. Add all the existing and upcoming options for customization, the possibilities are endless.

I think you have a great idea. I mean, a lot of the great ideas today aren't necessarily far fetched innovations, but rather easy to incorporate components that allow for more creativity, flexibility, etc. Forge was a great example of Bungie giving the community something that definitely had defined parameters, but was essentially limitless (to an extent) in creativity. The more they do that with maps, gametypes, etc, the more innovations we will see incorporated into gameplay, and the more longevity the game will have.

Plus if we get the damn 90 degree snapping tools and terrain, Halo would have the closest thing to a console SDK lol.

I saw someone suggest something like this on Reach before. For a BTB game have a CTF to three, and then kills start counting. At the end, you have to plant a bomb for the finish...or something like that. Like you said, lots of possibilities. It's a little like the option H2 gave to allow points only for headshots, point loss for deaths, etc - but this is obviously much better. Mix this with forge and you have maps that can be created and catered towards gametypes that are yet unthought of.

Here's one weird game thought: What about mixing VIP with KOTH. Whoever steps inside the hill first for each team becomes VIP for their team (so if your VIP dies and you stay out of the hill you have no VIP to get killed). You get points for killing a VIP and points for being in the hill. I don't know what the requirements should be for a combination of time/VIP kills for a win, or how much of one you should have to win, but it would be a strategic tradeoff. Do you enter the hill and get points for that or do you play more defensively and try to take out the VIPs? Are you just going to charge into the hill for your team to try to take it away, knowing that if you enter the hill and die, you'll become the VIP (if nobody else on your team is) and allow the enemy not only to keep the hill, but get a VIP kill. It could be dumb, but just a thought.

Yeah, like kills are worth a certain amount, and flags about 10 times more.

Could also have the Counter-Strike-ey "Bomb/defuse the target OR wipe them all out" kinda feel.

How about a VIP/Oddball/King of the Hill Big Team Battle gametype? Each team has a VIP who has to storm the enemy base to retrieve an oddball, then his team has to drive him to the hill. They only score points when their VIP is carrying his oddball in the hill. When the VIP dies then a new one is randomly decided. The hill moves every minute.

Yeah I agree this would make for a lot more new crazy gametype possibilities. Although I think that it might start to get too complicated.

Well obviously the less complicated and easy to learn ones will be the most popular, so it likely won't be a problem, but cool idea nonetheless.

Seeing people post ideas here makes me think this just might work.

It's not complicated. Sure, you can make it as complicated as you want, but that's the beauty. You can make it very simple and stick to the norm, but you can also make it complicated and take advantage of the options. Like I said, the more options, the better for game longevity and depth.

An Infection Juggernaut team game would be cool. Like each team has an infectious juggernaut and when the juggernaut kills someone on the other team, they respawn on his team, but the normal people don't pull enemies to their team, only the juggernaut. Winner is by overall kills, like 50 for 4v4 or 100 for 8v8, and the juggernaut is random, but when he dies another one of his team makes becomes juggernaut when they respawn.

That could be cool, but you'd have to select the winners on personnal score like a normal Zombies game.

Else you'd get people whining "Hey, I was on the winning team, then this guy infected me at the last second and I lost skill wtf?!".

Ya know? It just takes some figuring out and testing though. No biggie.

here's an idea, big team assault the flag, basically one team has a bomb and the other team has a flag, the team with the bomb have to take it to the enemy base and plant it before they can take the flag, then they have to get the flag back to their base before the bomb is disarmed, so the flag acts as the detonator
