Subject: Halo 2 Windows 7............. arrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrrr *Update *

OK I'm starting to hate MS.

Just got Windows 7, tried to install H2 for Vista then I get this error:

LIVE gaming on windows failed to initialize. This may be because another live gaming on windows application (such as the Halo 2 dedicated server) is running on the same machine. Otherwise, reinstalling the game may fix this problem.

Well I have done everything on web about how to fix this including uninstall/reinstall several times.

If anyone can help please give some suggestions about where I should go from here.

50 in H2/H3? Great, but you still fail at this.

I got the same issue. Either:
1. Downgrade or dualboot vista.
2. Post on the GFW forums (forums.gamesforwindows.com), they have lots of threads like this.
3. Just get Halo 2 on Xbox.

Also, it is happing with Shadowrun and GoW pc as well, they just dont like 7 for some reason.

thanks for the reply. I wish MS could make products that work together.

just out of curiosity, have you guys tried opening the shortcut properties and running it in compatibility mode with windows vista?

Tried that....
I think i will just reinstall 7, if that fails, im rolling back to vista. Besides, i have also been having issues with other games as well.

Just for curiosity what brand/model of video card are you running? Is it a desktop or laptop?

  • 11.08.2009 6:46 PM PDT

Just installed on a windows 7 64bit desktop Halo 2 worked fine must be a laptop issue

Not a laptop issue cause I have a laptop with Windows 7 Ultimate 64 bit and a 9800M GS and the game runs great on full settings. I had that issue then I just uninstalled halo 2 and before putting halo 2 in i installed games for windows live. Then opened up gfwl and made sure all was updated. Then reinstalled halo 2 and it worked great.

This tutorial should help, it involves renaming files.
can't guarantee it will work, as I did a clean install.

I had some issues installing it on my laptop with Windows 7 as well but I eventually got it working. When I first installed it I did a custom installation and I got the same error message that the TC got. Then I installed the 1.01 patch from a file site and re-installed the game but choose to play it while it installs and that worked out fine.

Use the offline updater for Windows Live, that's how I fixed this problem when I got it. I updated the game, but the Live was still outdated and this happened.

DONT TALK LIKE THIS or revive dead threads. Anyway, right click the installer, go to properties, compatability, then set it to Vista SP2.

You don't have the authority, Sir.

Thats Quite Funny, How Come Halo 2 Dosent run great on Windows 7, But Halo 1 Runs Perfectly on it?

MS have to sort this out.

Because it has issues with GFWL. Same with GoW and ShadowRun.

To any mods reading this thread:

Can we expect an official patch for this defect or should we all just use the installation disks as expensive frisbees?

The workaround on http://forums.gamesforwindows.com/t/8958.aspx has caused issues for some users so I don't really want to have to try it.

Not all of us have the luxury of being able to dual boot.

Yes, I am a hypocrite, and I'm sorry. I really do mean well, but I'm not running on all cylinders.

Everytime someone buys a copy of Halo 2 Vista, a puppy dies.

Pretty sure there won't be a patch. MS and Bungie have spoken loud and clear that they don't give a -blam!- about computer gamers. That's why they didn't get my cash for ODST, and won't get any for future releases.

i have the same problem
i tried updating and computability mode but nothing works

LIVE gaming on windows failed to initialize. This may be because another live gaming on windows application (such as the Halo 2 dedicated server) is running on the same machine. Otherwise, reinstalling the game may fix this problem.
