Well if Bungie gets around to it. What would be the ranks/titles if bungie implemented a rank/karma (whatever you want to call it) system?

How many ranks should there be?

Once we figure out how many ranks there could be, we can then decide what each rank should be called.

Well as you probably know - we haven't gotten much input from Bungie itself lately, so no one really knows how it would work.. I think it should at least be tested to see how it works out - if it doesn't, then ditch it! But I think it would do the site much more good..

dude, you pulled a jesus!

Besides what antihero said, There should be ranks like spammer or flame bait. Something to let you know what the person has done in the past.

How about

Number of blacklistings: 3

User status: cool dudez0r

or something

I believe they should put the number of blacklistings, like below the date that you joined.

With B.B. gone, the passion of Bungie.net has lessened.

I think the ranks should relate to Bungie in one way or another... Such as something subtle from Marathon, Oni, or Halo (or any other game).

Titles like "Rampant," might be a good bet. The more of a Bungie fan you are, the more meaning such titles would have.

If I could, I would think of more examples of what I'm getting at. Perhaps I'll post them later when I think of them.

The problem with that is that if someone got a member name from a game they didn't like. For example, if I got a Halo related one instead of a marathon related one i may well get quite irritated that I'm a "Cortana" instead of a "Durandal"

True. I'd feel no different on that myself, Tombland.

Yea thats true , but if they gave you the name for being a awsome member .. You would think they would know what to give you because they have watched how you have posted in the past and about what specific game or whatever the disscusion had been about. But overall I think the whole rank/title idea would be great for bungie to try so the older or lets say best bungie fans overall would get a title. And can be proud of that title.

But yes at the same time they could use the blacklisted idea as well so the other members could tell what the user has done in the past. And giving the member a name as Flaming Noob! or evil things like that are good for other members to see as well to just give them a thought about what that member is doing for the bungie community.

That's true i suppose, but it all comes down to who will actually give people names. For example, the bungie staff are too busy making Owt Gnop! to actually study the forums, and the mods, well they like to post here as well as doing administrative duties, and I doubt they would enjoy spending much more time giving people names. The number of blacklists is idea is a good idea, but I'm not sure about giving them names for it. I suppose for some trolls it could work more like a badge of honour than a "look at me I'm an idiot" t-shirt...

I think there should be one in between User Deleted and Member. Lets say a Member did get blacklisted and he loses his rank. This would be the lowest rank for an active member because User Deleted is for someone who hasn't been active. Unreliable would be a good name, until we use some Bungie names like Shai said. Bungie names would be good. And there could be options for one rank. So if someone didn't like one, there could be others (1 or 3 more) that could be chosen.

Don't forget Content Monkey!

Personally, I believe that Member should be the lowest. I don't think that we should degrade members to something lower such as Josher's suggestion of Unreliable, because I am just too nice to be "mean" even if they deserve it.

I do believe that there should be at least 4-5 different ranks. This give incentive to those who reach one level to get to the next level or to not fall back to the other levels.

Some suggestions in no particular order ("Member" may be omitted):
Respected Member
Helpful Member
Knowledgeable Member
Edit: Trusted Member

Meh, as long as it deters members from being asses towards other members, this could work.

they would be able to tell what game to take your name from if you've put a favourite game in your profile. If they dont do that they could also give you a choice of name so you can pick it yourself.

And i agree with dmbfan09 about his choice of titles.

It wouldn't be character names, since not all of them are sex-nuetral... people would get irritated. It would be more like status names or adjectives rather than characters themselves.

For example: Rather that Master Chief, it would be Spartan.

I don't really care about the ranks here.... Just as long we're all even and DON"T fight.

That would likely encourage the spammers/flamers to spam/flame more if they had a role like that.

Guess what? We don't. There's fighting all the time, like the Underground oldies telling the Zanzibar n**bs where to get off.

I think a ranking system would be great, but when you join Bungie.net, you should be able to choose what game series you want the ranks to co-enside with. Say, if I picked Halo, it would be:

Member
Marine
Spartan
Grunt
etc.

But if I picked Marathon, it would be stuff like:

Member
BOB
Cyborg
Rampant AI
etc.

That would be good.
Although there would be SOOO many 'Marines' around, it wouldn't be funny.

I think that ranks are a bad Idea:

1. There will probably be newer members who have ideas, and if a higher ranked member disagrees with him in the slightest, that could bring out the "you think your better then me" scenario, which could start never ending flame wars.

2. Who would decide ranks? Mods could be to busy to promote members, member voting would probably be untruthful (more demoting than promoting), and haveing a system based on posts is stupid because of spamming.

Besides we already can be promoted to a higher rank; either a Mod or a Theme Master, but in order to do that you really have to contribute to the community and show your value as a trusted member.

I hate everything, but it's not my fault.

In response to Butane:
1. If a person says "I'm better than you because I'm an X Member, and you're just a Member" and starts a flame war, the solution would be simple. The stupid elitist member would simply be knocked all the way down to the bottom, or down a couple ranks.
2.The post counter was killed a long time ago because of that. Achronos, and Sketch could, and the mods could help out.
I don't know if you lurked the forums before your join date, but you do not have a correct perception of the mods. There are 10 mods. That's it. And even though some of them have disappeared *cough* Sigma *cough*, Achronos is unwilling to appoint more, since he can't seem to find people that he trusts enough. Which, even though I think we could use more mods, is fine, Achronos can do whatever he wants. However, I think it would be really benificial if there were a few ranks in between Member and Forum Ninja, to give people a realistic goal to strive for, encouraging more activity. The chances of anyone on this forum becoming a mod are slim to none, so that is no incentive to become a "Respected Member". And to become a Theme Master, you have to have to make a theme and have it be approved by Bungie, which is also a near impossibility. Then Sketch has to get around to making you a Theme Master.

....Which is why we stay away from those forums. The Flood is filling with random people and posts.

I have a tendancy to agree with Butane. The second that a more complicated ranking system that rewards certain members pops up, all kinds of problems arise. Even if there was a penalty for elitism, as Ghandi suggests, only the mods and higher ups could enforce it, resulting in one more thing for mods to watch for and discipline.

A ranking system is a double-edged sword. While you can argue that the possibility of promotion would inspire some to be better members, it also creates divisions between new and old members, which can cause new members to be intimidated by older members, thereby breeding more elitism.

I think those members who think they deserve to be promoted need to be patient and continue showing the Bungie powers that be that they are loyal and trustworthy fans. Eventually, when Bungie has need for more mods they can trust, those who have made positive contributions to the forums will be rewarded (I don't know that all the mods would consider the responsibility a reward) with Bungie's trust and a higher amount of freedom and responsibility in the forums.

Now that I have re-read everyones posts everyone has something great to say. I really do think it is a great idea to do the rank system. And maybe we shouldnt make a flamebait or anything lower than member title , because it just puts the person down and I know I dont like that.

If they do even consider making the system , I think they should just make a few ranks and they should have nothing to do with any of the games Bungie has made. That way less fights acure when people are posting and see what the other person plays or if they dis-like the other pesons game.

Some titles they could have are like trusted member. Etc... Keep up the ideas I like reading them guys...

Supposing this is ever implemented, would everyone start off with a clean slate, or would some people start out slightly higher than others?

Will there be a limit to the number of different ranks? I know the group forums only allow for 15 different roles.

And the only rank I'm going to suggest is this: Gone Plaid.
