Subject: Question for Bungie Regarding the Current Banning Spree

Dear Bungie

I'm a long time halo fan and am really looking forward to Reach next year and I'm sure it will be well worth the wait. Recently we've caught a glimpse of some "Leaked footage" and now I hear that the forum population is getting hammer whacked.
My question to you is Y. The genital man who took the photos obviously did something wrong and i can understand that HE needs to be punished but we are the halo fans that just want tidbits of info just to hold us till release date. So needless to say I'm a little confused at how you are treating your fan base because they are simple excited and want to discuss your up coming game And if the photos are not legit y not just say so instead of not commenting.
Anyway thats my 2 cents can't wait for Reach!

There are rules, and they must be followed. If Bungie doesnt want people talking about leaked info on their forums then dont talk about it, there are other forums where they can chit chat about them.

Well when someone comes on here and posts those pics, that someone is also leaking material. Thus they are banned.

Yes lol, I think you might want to change that to "gentlemen".

  • 11.09.2009 4:55 PM PDT

But this is the Halo site. I understand the need for rules and don't mind following them it's just seems a little silly that's all. I think they should want to celebrate that there game has this much hype a year before release, don't you?
but maybe I'm wrong.

I believe in all honesty they consider ALL leaked material to be spoilers, whether the leaked materials is screenshot, video, the ending in form of text or whatever. even pre alpha builds.

and it's easy to understand why they want their forums spoiler free...

imo that's the only logical explanation, really.

He means pics,

But to bungie leaked anything is as bad if not worst than a Spoiler cause they're trying to keep it under wraps.

Btw - polls on bungie.net mean absolutely nothing, so please don't use them to try and prove some kind of point.

Bungie wants to maintain the control of info that we the fans recieve. The people that come to these forums are the people that go out in the streets and hype the game at school, at work, at the bar, etc. WE are teh silent majority that really sell the game. If we gain too much info though through leaked screens and info, bungie loses a major cog in their hype machine if we don't like what we see. They'd rather us know nothing and think the game great before release than know enough to see that its really not as great as it will be made to seem. If you doubt me, go watch the believe trailer, and then play the game, and tell me when the game hit that level of hype and excitment that the commercial did, becasue I never saw it. Halo 2 and 3 were good, but were def disappointing to some degree.

You hit it right in the bullseye. Bungie would rather take all our money if the game sucks then let us know and get no money. Bungie is a business and they are out to make money. They might care about their fan base but at the end of the day they are in it for the money. Bungie has done a fantastic job at hypeing up their games. I have been disapointed by Halo 2, Halo 3, and mostly ODST. They were all great games that are a lot of fun, but they were not what Bungie said they would be. They pull the blindfold over our eyes and tell us a nice story that gets us excited so we buy their game.

If Reach isn't amazing and revolutionary with amazing ahead of the time graphics and gameplay with an incredible story and cutscenes that were not taken from previous games then I will be done with Bungie. They have been feeding us Halo CE for the past 8 years. Reach needs to be creative and inventive with unique style and cutscenes with amazing graphics and gameplay. If they expand on what they started in ODST then they can give us an amzing game but I question wheather they will actually put forth the effort. I think they are willing to spoon feed us the same game again to milk some more money out of us.

While other times leaks are put out by them intentionally to see the fans' reactions.

Well.

Most logical reason I heard as to why keep an info lock down is because they don't want people to get spent on the leaked content. So when they roll out a sales pitch people aren't apathetic or are too disinterested by negative predictions and assumptions.

"I have no words that would do justice to the atrocities you commit to the English language, as well as your continued assaults on the concepts of basic literacy and logical reasoning."

Linking to places to get leaked assets (text, images, or otherwise), even if the leaked info is FAKE will get you permanently banned. Period. Do not expect me to feel sorry for you.

Talking about the contents of said leaks is not strictly against the rules (unless we're talking spoilers or such in text form), but rather is a gray area where you are subject to whether or not a moderator thinks you're just an enthusiastic fan or a prick who wants to ruin things for other people. Expect appeals of "it was just a joke" or "i'm just excited about the game" to probably fall on deaf ears.

A good rule of thumb is to not be the first guy making threads about a leak. The moderators tend to take a ban first, ask questions later approach for a few days to make sure the message that leaks aren't tolerated is VERY clear. By the same token, though, just because you see other people talking about it doesn't make it okay. Frustrating, I know, but that's why it is called a "gray area". I suggest keeping such discussion to your groups and other places on the Internet until you know for sure the mods are okay with it.

I am curious as to why leaking content is a punishable offense. Is it because we are part of the advertising campaign and that you need to put your best foot forward?
