So we have 2 types of Health systems that have been introduced in the Halo series:

Halo CE: Sheild & Health: Sheild is auto-regenerating first layer of defense, one sheilds are down, health starts taking hits, once health hits zero, player dies. Health can only be replenished via Med packs. Sheilding replenishes constantly when not taking hits.

Halo 2: Non-regenerative Health scrapped, auto-regenerative Sheild based defense only. Once sheilds are down, hits will become fatal to player. Sheilding auto-regenerates much faster while not taking hits than in Halo CE to make up for loss of health.

Halo 3: Same as Halo 2.

Halo 3 ODST: Return to a modified version of Halo CE Health system. The ODST has a first layer of "Stamina"(pretty much sheilding), which helps him resist damage from hits, once his stamina flutters, he is succeptable to lethal hits to his health. Stamina slowly auto-regenerates constantly when not taking hits, Health only regenerates from use of Med Packs and Optican Stations.

TL;DR
So we can classify the health systems into:
- The Halo CE/ODST health system AKA Non-regenerative Health, which we will now refer to as NRH
- The Halo 2/3 Health system AKA Auto-Regenerative Health, which we will now refer to as ARH

If we look at Halo Reach from a gameplay perspective, It would be logical for bungie to imitate Halo 2 and 3's ARH system, as most players are now completly in sync with it, compared to the smaller population who are also in sync with Halo CE/ODSTs, NRH System.
One could say though, that the purpose of reintroducing the NRH system in ODST, besides of canonical reasons, was to warm up players for its return in Halo Reach.

If we look at it from a Canonical approach, it would be logical for the NRH system to make a comeback, as the spartans were equipped with Mark V MJOLNIR armor, which operated using this system.. this choice may not be as popular in the matchmaking society though...

There IS another Option though!
What if Bungie were to employ the NRH system in the Campaign of Reach to keep the Canon right, and then emply the ARH system in Mulitplayer for faster paced gameplay? Or Vice versa of course...There would be no need for cheap "rehealthing" right before a player is killed by another player due to a Med-pack or teammates fighting for the few med-packs on a map..

or Maybe there is a choice on MM if you would like to play with ARK or NRH..

oh, here is an article on the health system in the Halo series..

What to you think?

I would personally prefer the same health as CE because:

1. We haven't seen it in a while and I kind of miss it, ODST was still very different with the whole stamina feature. Change is good.
2. It made one think before they rushed an enemy, because there was a cost to taking damage. Thus utilizing more skillful thinking.
3. It prevents ongoing killing sprees with certain players. Think of a player in a Ghost/Warthog/Banshee just roaming for the whole match, and while his shields are down and he/she takes damage, they just retreat to being fully replenished. The health system eliminates this unfairness since they would have to find a health pack.

For the dude that voted other.. What did u have in ur mind?

  • 11.09.2009 8:18 PM PDT

Actually halo 2 and 3 had an "invisible health bar"
if you strip some one's shield, put 2 br bursts into the torso
let it regenerate, then strip it again
if you shoot him one more time in the torso, he would die,
since the BR needs 3 torso burst to kill unshielded

this proves that even if we dont have a healthbar
we still have an unregenerating health system.

False. While we do have an invisible health bar in Halo 3, it does regenerate. It regenerates at a slower pace than shields.

Health in Halo 3.

Only if recharging is standard in MM. Health works okay in campaign, but doesn't really work in multiplayer. I am a fan of having a shown health bar regardless and an option to stop recharging in customs.

i dunno... i like the system now in H3. i know that with the mark V armor it wouldn't make sense, but everybody knows gameplay > canon. I think it would be hard on new players also, and it would be bad for people with large killstreaks.

recharging or rehealing?

  • 11.10.2009 5:26 PM PDT

Its a trap!!!

well if you want to go by canon nothing can actualy recharge your health. Bio foam is just a patch if that is what you think the reason is

I do not want health packs. I want to concentrate on getting weapons, team shooting. Not worry about some pack that I may loose my edge in a fight even though I was relatively safe long enough

As I said in other topics it just slows gameplay down. If they want to put non regenerating health in campaign then ok. But multi player no. I wouldnt even mind to try out the rumored perks in campaign.... but i never want to see them in multiplayer unless perks is in a seperate playlist and wasnt the standard

I will say the same for fall damage. It slows the game up. And now that we see chief crash land from space onto earth in H3 then why should a 15-30 foot drop even phase a spartan?

I want to be on equal footing with other players and not have to go on a health pack quest. The recharge of both shields and health make more sense for multiplayer fairness

i understand in campaign you might want to make every thing feel more dangerous and health is one way to do this. But there are other ways also

Do you really care? you can't automatically see my signature anyway.

I'd say use them both slower (2x,3x,5x whatever is balanced) than the ARH, but with health packs so you can just heal up.

ARK.

To me, making a person keep tabs on their health is just annoying and doesn't mesh with the game.

They shouldn't have even had Health in ODST. If they wanted to make the player feel weaker than a Spartan then they could have done something different. Either cut Health and rename Stamina to Health or cut Stamina and keep Health.

And for the love of god, if they chose the latter. Let us keep Medipacks we find for use on the spot.

it doese'nt look nextgen , looks good but not nextgen
If by next-gen you mean crappy, dark and colorless, I agree. It doesnt look next-gen at all.

I like the idea of having NRH for both campaign and multiplayer. In campaign, in ODST and CE, you would know what you could and what you couldn't do based on your health and you could measure more or less how many shots you could take before dying. You would have to pace yourself and think things through. In Halo 2 or 3 it was somewhat or a guess.

As for multiplayer a NRH system would help balance out a few things with weapons. The whole 1 headshot from X or Y weapons kinda ruined a few things for me since most of the spray n pray weapons became useless. With the health and shield you can also have plasma weapons tear through shield as if it was paper yet have lower impact on health the oposite could be done for human weapons. As for the health itself i think it balances things out in multiplayer. If you get 4 people who try to kill you and fail, it gives you a health handicap. Health kit spawns could become an important strategy points on some maps.

i just came up with a new idea.. what if health SLOWLY regenerates in the NRH system, but is help VERY MUCH by med packs.. like a hybrid of the ARH and NRH systems..

  • 11.10.2009 6:29 PM PDT

Personally, I like the health system they have in Halo: CE and ODST (yes they are the same system just presented differently).

Although, if they do this then your shield needs to be able to take less of a beating (which I'm totally down for).

Halo 3 ODST Health and Reheal after 2 mins, not recharge in 5 secs. And keep medkids from ODST or Halo 1 or both.
