around 60% of the topics on this forum were locked. All the excited halo fans who wanted to share possible pictures of HR on a halo reach forum were permanently banned, never to be allowed to talk about their favorite game on bungie.net again.

Do you think the ninjas handled this correctly? Permanently alienating fans and all? They didn't post erotic content or shock images. Just stuff about halo. I know it wasn't allowed, but permanent bans. Wow.

I personally think it was a little unprofessional. Just my .02. Bungie hasn't even officially addressed the issue yet, and fans are getting punished for getting hyped for their game. And I thought they were all about the fans :/

P.S. When you have to lock down over half the board, you may want to reconsider how you're handling things! Doesn't look good.

A bit late, person who questioned Bungie if they were taking the leak well was banned... just saying, you seem to be doing the same.

The Oblivious Murderer

It happens to be in the rules saying that if you post leaked stuff you will end up with a permanent ban. Maybe if people would read the rules once in a while the would have known not to post the leaked material.

I'm sure they wouldn't ban someone for discussing something important like this. besides, they owe us an explanation, what with half our online community being banned.

They don't owe you anything. It clearly says, talking about leaked stuff is prohibited, people took that for granted and got punished.

Go Ogle it.

  • 11.09.2009 11:00 PM PDT

Were it so easy.

Very good point, I agree with you, that was way out of hand and the least Bungie could have done was properly acknowledge and talk about the incident.

you guys sure do embrace the authoritarian attitude bungie has. Whatever, I;m just saying those guys who got perma banned were just talking about halo on a halo forum, oh god what savages!

Linking to places to get leaked assets (text, images, or otherwise), even if the leaked info is FAKE will get you permanently banned. Period. Do not expect me to feel sorry for you.

Talking about the contents of said leaks is not strictly against the rules (unless we're talking spoilers or such in text form), but rather is a gray area where you are subject to whether or not a moderator thinks you're just an enthusiastic fan or a prick who wants to ruin things for other people. Expect appeals of "it was just a joke" or "i'm just excited about the game" to probably fall on deaf ears.

A good rule of thumb is to not be the first guy making threads about a leak. The moderators tend to take a ban first, ask questions later approach for a few days to make sure the message that leaks aren't tolerated is VERY clear. By the same token, though, just because you see other people talking about it doesn't make it okay. Frustrating, I know, but that's why it is called a "gray area". I suggest keeping such discussion to your groups and other places on the Internet until you know for sure the mods are okay with it.

Here's how I handle the grey area. Other mods may be different.

This is a post I'll ban you for.

hey guys, what do you think of this supposed "perks" feature? and what do you think that new Covenant weapon is?

Posted by: Nedus
Spoilers are the main thing you want to avoid, especially later on down the line when story details tend to be revealed to the press in magazines.

What makes these supposed "Leaked" Reach pics any different? If they were fake, Mods shouldn't give a perma-ban. If they were real, a perma-ban is VERY nessesary. So either they were real (I really, REALLY hope not) and that's why people got banned, or Mods just didn't want false information to be spread around the forums. So which one is it?

None of the mods know if the screens are real or not, and it doesn't matter anyway. If they're fake, we're preventing false information from being spread. If they're real, we're preventing leaked material from being distributed on Bungie's website. It's not our responsibility to confirm authenticity of any alleged leaks; we just clean them up. It doesn't have to be one or the other. Stop thinking in black and white.

Furthermore, this is where you have to put it into context. Let's say someone posted a supposed spoiler like a week after the Reach announcement trailer at E3. Would that strike you as anything but fake?

Now, let's fast forward to say...May/June 2010. By now, the Reach beta will probably be in full swing (this is purely my guess, nothing more), maybe a couple sites/mags (most likely French) had a hands-on with the game or eyes-on with the campaign. Someone posting spoilers at this time should be taken much more seriously, since more and more people outside Bungie are seeing the game, and this increases the chance of a genuine leak.

they're just mods they don't even count as real people. The weekly update didn't say anything, and people are still getting banned for posting halo reach content on a halo reach board.
