Currently unless you are a total workhorse in Halo, or unless you boost (cheating) or cheat in some other manner (host boot) its difficult to maintain winning streaks with the current host system. I've seen it happen to high level players who should have easily won the match but, most likely their ping rate was so high getting kills became much more work than if they were on the team that had host. I know with the billions of dollars Bungie gets from the Halo franchise they can figure out a way to either have dedicated servers or completely revamp the host system to only include people from your local area to play with. Ive been in too many matches where I stick someone and suddenly the sticky falls off and they melee me once and I'm dead...suddenly when the game is over I look at the person with the most kills and view their gamer card and find out their from Norway or Ireland. This doesnt prove who is the best halo player it just proves that they got lucky and received the random host. Please tell me this will AT LEAST be looked at for the upcoming reach title being released in 2010.

the only solution to eliminating that advantage is using dedicated servers, which leads to other problems.

first, MS will have to set up servers on all continents (if the only server is in american, well, it'll suck and lag). that costs money... and we know how MS is.
second, and related to first, let's say you live in portugal (it's extreme south west europe, fyi) and the server is in germany (middle of europe). you'll lag a lot in every game. whereas with the host system, depending on where the host is, you might lag OR NOT.
third, servers = downtimes. look at WoW... they have to perform maintenance operations sometimes.

the best things to do imo are these :
being american NOT be a requirement to host (in a game with 15 europeans and ONE american, you can be sure the american will get host, regardless of his connection).
being able to select the host in custom/forge.
have the host the person with the best connection (related to the "american requirement" issue) instead if choosing one country by default to host.
take in consideration the geographical location of all players before choosing the host (if 14 players are europeans, choose a european to host, NOT an american, even if the american does have the best connection!).
continental MM (so I don't play with japanese/australians).
improved netcode.

Tallahassee?
I spent two weeks in Tallahassee one night.

I am not going to say host is perfect but for me it lags way less than games on dedicated servers. Whatever Bungie chooses to do will be for the best. I doubt they will go with dedicated servers but you never know.

This is what I wanted from this post. A well thought out reply stating some of the details I was unaware of.

Thanks,

-I know what you're thinking, and it's crazy.
-But... what if monkeys really could fly?

But surely, an american server for a European player (and vice versa.) must be MUCH, MUCH better than a trans-continental host for said player

Second acct: RC Zerg Rushes

The current system sucks and needs to be scrapped.

To replace it:
-In MM, whomever has the best connection gets host, so as to ensure the best possible game for everyone.
-In customs, the person who starts the party has host, and it stays that way, regardless of who joins.
-Regional MM. Europeans should not get matched up with Americans, Australians with Asians, etc., if all that's going to happen is insane amounts of BS and lag.

it still depends on the location of the server.
if the server is in california, then I'd rather have a host system and have my host live in NY. it's closer to me, less lag. so the best thing would be to put the server on the east coast, right? but then player in west coast canada/west coast america/mexico etc will lag more.

really, the best thing would be to have at least one server per continent. one per country would be really exquisite, but not going to happen.
or have continental MM. so we don't have to send datas overseas.

The last time I tried to make a quote, a car smashed through my wall and the tire hit my grandmother in the other room. But for those of you who can haz once more between five, I say it will be five between seven divided by zero multiplied by Chick Norass and Broce Tee.

First of all THERE IS NO SUCH THING AS A HOST-BOOT. ITS WHEN YOUR CONNECTION DROPS..
Secondly just because someone is HOST doesn't mean that they are cheating or that they are hacking because they just have a BETTER CONNECTION THAN YOU so DEAL WITH IT.

wow you are such a genius...(not remotely)So I guess you have never heard of Splits host booter? It finds the host of the game and you can change their ping rate to about 250 ms to lag them out and it will give you host. But since you're such a retard...I mean genius you already know this.

The hosting system has changed in every iteration of Halo to date so it would be a first if it was not improved upon.
