But was the surface of Reach actually turned into glass with the heat?

or was it just very barren.

id like to read the books but theyre not exactly widely available in the uk, and ive managed to read first strike.

would just like to know, thanks for any comments you may or may not make

Yup. It's so hot, the surface of the planet turns to glass.

I believe glassing isn't literally turning dirt into glass.
it refers to the look of the planet after it's been glassed (it shines like glass).

it rather means that the ground has been liquefied, and is shining (because of the lava) from orbit, like glass.

seriously? you learn something new every day

i think it really depends on the area, if they were at a sandy area, say a beach, it would literally be glass, because glass is made from heat and sand. but dirt and earthy areas i would imagine would turn into a molten type area, that would probably shine as someone above me said, after it cooled off.

too be fair, noone ever went onto the "glass" so we'd never know, or at least it hasn't been documented yet in any of the books or other canon documents

Group invites will be treated very poorly because the Care Package is empty.

I would assume that it would be a very nice skating rink, if not glass.

I used Amazon to get mine, as well as a few from Waterstones.

Wherever you roam
so far from home
you'll be safe from peril
life threatening and terrible
if you avoid David Powel
and keep track of your towel.

It's not like the glass in your window but it's still glass. It would actually mostly be black glass and obsidian, so it would be all dark and shiny.

However, the planet would soon be in the grips of a mild nuclear winter, less sunlight would reach the surface because of clouds of ash thrown up by convection currents during the glassing process. On a planet with a significant amount of water (which pretty much any human habitable world would be) the actual glass would soon be covered in ash and snow.

Luckily for the UNSC the ash will soon settle to the ground and the planet would return to it's original climate more or less, carbon monoxide and dioxide would be much more abundant and oxygen would be rarer though. Which isn't so bad, the ashy covering is very fertile so small plants will grow very well on the surface. Within a few decades the planet will once again have a thriving Earth-based ecosystem as it did before the Covenant glassed it, providing that the UNSC supports terraforming efforts on the destroyed colonies.

Some planets such as Reach and Harvest would return to normal even more quickly as parts of their surfaces were left untouched by the Covenant on account of Forerunner ruins.

I speak the truth, and truth speaks itself.
The lies disguise what you despise.
Run. Flee and be, what you've always dreamed.
What happens now won't matter later.
What you see will not be, nor what you imagine will not happen.
The end is close, so take your dose.

Therefore the term GLASSed.

Can't. Remember the Halo 2 opening cutscene? That ain't glass - it is a smoldering and burning crust.
