The thing with mw2 and many other cod games is that yes it pulls you in campaign wise and there is alot going on, but this is because the game is hugely scripted. What happens, happens the same way over and over again on multitple playthrews. I find halo really shouldn't go down that path,
yes use that in certian key parts of the game for story, but i feel halo should be more roam free, exploring and a feeling of not knowing about the environment your in.
One of the reasons halo 1 was so good is that you really felt as if your in an alien environment. You had the choice to complete a level in multiple ways as well, one thing you cannot do in cod games.
I can see however where people are coming from, they want a feeling that there in the thick of a war with just alot of things going on around them. Halo reach being a huge war on reach i guess the majority of the game will be this so yes give the illusion of being in the thick of war with say odst drop pods coming down in the distance, air strikes ect , but keep the freedom of choice of being able to move around the battlefield in whatever way you see fit. Maybe have certain events that you can trigger that set off a set piece of scripted gameplay but have it so its your choice.
For example you come up to some odsts in need of a pelican pick up because of casualties. You can chose to help them fight of a set piece of waves of covys or that lesads to a scripted high intence set piece, or can simply leave them to it and go elsewhere without that set piece ever happening.
Doing somthing like that would improve replay value as well as giving a good mix of scripted events and free choice gameplay mechanics.
When it comes down to it i think bungie need to find a fine balance between scripted events and nonlinear gameplay.
Yes mw2 creates high quality set pieces but there is no choice in whats going to happen the same thing happens over and over in muliple gameplay sessions. Finding a balance to that the already set in stone halo gameplay is the key.
Im hoping for some kind of free roaming warzone with differnt missions and obejectives nitted into it that you can find on many playthrews. Any main arch in story can be mini missions that are highly scripted story driven gameplay mechanics ala mw and other cod games that lead you threw a set piece. Once finished your back on the front line helping out the unsc and seing the results of ur just completed mission.
