I was thinking about Reach and wondering what could make the game more...open.
In the Halo trilogy you only get to play as the Chief (excluding Arby for a few levels but he still plays like the Chief).
In ODST you get to play as Multiple characters but they all pretty much play the same way. Yes there are some armor differences but they all do the same thing.
So in Reach how about instead of just playing as spartans, we play as regular marines and ODSTs too in between missions or can select a new game and choose who to play as.
This way you get differences so your not doing the same thing over and over.
Ex:
Marine
Capable with many weapons but less capable with covenant weapons(You can still use them just with less accuracy and more over heating). Can't dual wield except Pistols. Low armor (50% less than ODSTs) Must be driver class to pilot vehicles effectively. If a higher ranking marine, can give orders to AI marines.
ODST
Capable with many weapons including covenant weapons. Can't dual wield except pistols and SMG (but SMGs less effectively). Normal Armor (no shields). Can drive land vehicles quite well (but a pilot ODST will get it done much better and can drive air vehicles). ODST equipment like VISR comms, database and FoF ID tags(red for enemies, green for allies, etc). High ranking ODST can give orders to AI marines and ODSTs.
Spartan
Capable with all human and covenant weapons. Can dual wield both human and covenant weapons. Normal armor (and shield system for the spartans that got the upgrade). Can drive all land and air vehicles effectively. Spartan database contains Health signals from nearby allies and squadmates, can link up to UNSC database (like ODSTs but contains covenant bios on species, weapons, vehicles and maps for surrounding areas, FoF tags and capable of marking waypoints (can be seen by allies with VISR or VISR-capable headwear like sunglasses or marine helmets). High ranking spartans can give orders to marines, ODSTs and fellow spartans.
You probably noticed where I said classes. This could apply for that particular group (marine, ODST,etc) where you play as someone different from your last mission. Like ODST but without flashbacks.
I just thought it might make the game more interesting. You could switch between missions or choose what you prefer when you start a new game( or scenario).
EDIT: I'm talking about campaign.
