I hope that REACH's Marines have a smarter AI. The best AI fro a marine was in HALO CE. They all were smart enough to hang wit the you and to get your back and to fight the enemies when you see them right in front of you. That was a good AI system for the marines. I'm not saying it was perfect but compared to the other games of Halo it was the best.

In Halo 2 the Marines are becoming dumber and dumber. They don't know what to do and they jump out of cover to be shot in the head. NOT cool. And once I didn't even betray this Marine or any other in that game and when I gave this girl marine a rocket launcher. SHE SHOT ME WITH IT. Thank go it was Co-Op or I would have to re do that whole part. Again. And then I betrayed here and took the rocket launcher and gave to the other marine. lol

Now in Halo 3 I have noticed something very strange. All normal Marines are really dumb but the ODSTs are smarter then them all. They know how to fight, how to kill, How to take cover, but the other marines just jump off a cliff or run into battle. Normal marines also like to steal my rides and drive them into battle only to be blown up instantly.

(Notice how in each game they get more pathetic?)

And now for ODST. They Normal marines are definitly suicides. I think that BUNGIE might have done this on purpose but still. When I walk up to a marine in ODST to protect them they run away form me into the fire of the fight and their body gets blown up and lands right beside me. Then I'm alone to fight many like I'm a SPARTAN even though I'm not. I have to say the probably only reason I like the NPC's with an arrow over their heads is because they don't die but they still act the same except for when you actually need them to run out there and take some fire off of you they decide to stand in a corner. It gets a little annoying.

And now for what I hope REACH to have.

I hope that the REACH marines will be smarter to take cover when there is tons of enemies firing at them. I hope they learn to not just stand still ini a bttle but to attack them when they can. ANother nice feture for REACH is if you could telll he marines what to do, such as "stand by me", "Go to this way point that I have set down", "fall back", "take cover", and "open fire". If you could give those commands to the marines or something like that it would make the game play much better. All I'm really asking is for the Ai of MArines to be as smart or just a little dumber then the enemy NPCs.

Also since I'm on the topic of marines, I think it would be cool if you could bring back the HALO CE marine armor for them. That would be pretty cool because it would bring back the feel of Halo CE and also feel like it is a prologue to the game as well.

Now this is where I ask the people, What do you think Bungie should do to the Marine's and other NPC's?

Wielding a double-bladed chainsaw, wearing a potato sack on your head and spinning around mindlessly is amiably quick at getting anything done

I remember waaaay before Halo 3 was out, on the podcast, this AI writer dude (forgot name) said the marines were so smart, they could take down a scarab without the chief.

Apparently they were made stupid so they wouldn't "steal your thunder".

I can understand why the would make them dumber so they wouldn't "steal you r thunder". But still, We should at least have some courageous Marines that will be smarter and will help you instead of be a fancy little humans for you to watch them die. And AS you said in "stealing your thunder" Then why have that ini ODST? You're an ODST and aren't expected to be an amazing one man army. It just confuses me a lot.

I hope REACH marines can get you back when needed.

1.Arkham Asylum, 2.Mass Effect, 3.Halo CE, 4.Mass Effect 2, 5.Halo 2, 6.Splinter Cell Double Agent, 7.Gears of War 2, 8.Medievil, 9.Oblivion, 10.Crash Team Racing

Allies shouldn't exist if they are not going to be any use. Allies are there to somewhat steal my thunder, not to act as women in despair

AI should be active like in HaloCE, but it should know all the tricks it knows in Halo3. Plus vehicle AI should be something entirely different

Marines don't stand a chance in Halo canon, but atleast they have a chance against normal human beings. Marines in games can't even drive or follow me past the point X or know basic tactics or have common sense.

Lower health could be fine if the smartness went up but it didn't, it only got worse.

Exactly what you said. It should be better in REACH. I hope it is. I also hope a bungie employee sees this and realizes to change the problem now before it's too late.

They should really improve the AI for the Marines.

You say this as though they were stupid and didn't realize that Ally AI in Halo has been terrible.

Look, Joe Staten confirmed that in the game you will play as a spartan in a squad of five spartans. He also said that the gameplay felt like a squad based shooter, but without the extra baggage of a squad based shooter.

What do I infer from this? Well, in squad based shooters, one usually issues orders to your squad mates, correct? But that seems to fall under the "extra baggage" catagory. So I'm assuming that the AI are smart enough to cover you and assist you in combat based off your individual actions.

It makes sense that they must work on the Friendly AI. If you have spartans as team mates, and they are driving you off cliffs, the entire "magic" of the game will be destroyed, the illusion shattered. If you hate your spartan team mates because they keep getting in your way, you really won't want to play the campaign at all. So for Reach to work, the ally AI must be nailed perfectly. And Bungie wouldn't even begin to program the game if they hadn't gotten the AI right yet.

Likewise, if you have smart friendly AI, you also need very smart enemy AI. Why didn't Bungie put Elites into ODST? Because they didn't want to spoil the suprise of course. No more "if there is a box, I must climb on top of it only to get shot and fall off backwards" for the sanghelli race anymore.

I'm guessing they've been wanting to do a game about the Battle of Reach for a long time now, just waiting for the right moment. They wouldn't risk killing one of their favorite ideas. Believe.

How about all of the AI's shot like they are shoting for there own lives instead of how they are now. Or at least the covenant.

I remember in Halo 2 (level: cairo station) a couple of marines were taking cover and firing. I was impressed; this also allowed me to make sure they were alive and well. Never saw this in Halo 3.

I certainly hope Reach A.I.'s (enemy or allies) are highly intelligent. Allies won't steal "our thunder" as long as there are plenty of enemies that are tough and challanging to fight with. I'm sure bungie can pull it off.

I certainly hope that your SPARTAN AI teammates are a smarter AI then you're original NPC ally AI. I don't mean anything against Bungie on this but I just want his to be known. I know and hope that the SPARTAN Allies AI will be smarter then others just so it's more realisitc. THey are SPARTANs. But What I really am focusing is on the marines not as much as the other NPCs.

I feel that the marines in the Halo games so far have acted less then humans or As a human only drunk. lol I know we aren't as smart as the Covenant but I do believe that us humans can think quicker and more intelligently then the marines do. I want the marines to be more statistic and to think of what to do. I don't care if I have to hear them out loud saying," ok, Rick and bill you take the left flank and Will and I will take the right." I just want them to do it...

Actually that would be pretty sweet if hey did say that out loud so they sounded like they have an idea. lol

That would be way better than crappy one liners every second. That is the one thing I hope Bungie gets rid of in Halo Reach, NO MORE CRAPPY ONE LINERS...I mean they're caught in a war with an alien race, I don't think I would be shouting "When you gonna start fighting Split-lip" or "You look as ugly as my mother in law" when I've got ten of them shooting at me. I'd rather hear "Take cover", "Get down", "Elites coming up the left flank", "Banshee inbound!!!" and stuff like that not only during cutscenes (I swear you only hear them shout the REAL USEFUL stuff during cutscenes). The marines in the game talk like they're big and tough when they could barely hit the broad side of an Elephant

By the way..."Sniper's on the roof", "Jackal sniper in the window", "Sniper is on the third floor" would have been really useful from Marines in Halo 2 on Legendary....

  • 11.13.2009 3:13 PM PDT

May I point out, in ODST some areas your meant to be the only person left, as I have tested in the first level you play as Buck, the first 2-3 marines can fight alongside you, then when you hit the courtyard where the hunters appear every marine dies from one carbine headshot, clearly scripted.

To the OP, the invulnerable NPCs in ODST have a very simple trick to them. You cannot hide and have them do all the work. If you charge and go into danger and fight, they'll charge with you and kick ass alongside you. You hide, they'll hide/hang back and hardly fight.

Perhaps Bungie will use a whole new A.I system. Make it where when you enter the battle field, the same thing doesn't happen over and over again. enemies in different positions, etc. The Marines, Spartans, whatever will be tough, smart, etc, but the enemies will half to be even better or what's the point in you going in and fighing?

  • 11.13.2009 6:50 PM PDT

More bacon strips!

Anyone who firmly believes that the Halo CE Marines are the smartest should throw their rose tinted glasses in the garbage.

Please.

But I must admit that they didn't get any better over the course of the trilogy. At least, they can switch weapon with you, drive vehicles other than ghosts, they can flip vehicles with the right amount of Marines, they can use pretty much every weapon (besides Hammers, Swords and Brute Shots), they can coordinate a grenade spamfest and on Legendary, they have near perfect accuracy.

I personally thought the AI was good the way it is. They took cover, they worked as a team and they responded to your actions.
I guess there could be some room for improvement, but the AI is alright the way it is.

Group invites will be treated very poorly because the Care Package is empty.

Since we're working with spartans this time around. The Spartans, who are very smart, should 'see' what you do and react accordingly.

For example:

Player reloads. Spartan 302 moved out of cover and opens fire on enemies as you take cover.
Player moves for cover behind something. Spartan 284 moves out of cover and shoots at enemies as you move to cover.
Player is under fire. Spartan 129 beefs up the fire.

It should be like that. Spartans should be smart enough to react to what you do.

Just let me fight alongside allies as capable as legendary elites and I'll be happy. The section of The Covenant where the Arbiter drops in with his squad is always awesome.

I make a legitimate thread on the most logical choice for the next Bond actor, and you take that away from me by creating a parody thread indirectly connecting my thread to yours.

I hope your kids have bad influences and develop bad personalities. I wish this with all my heart.

Bungie makes dynamic enemy AI designed to make the game difficult, yet fun, yet their teammate AI sucks a bouncy ball the size of Uranus. Let's just hope Mr. Allen can lend his experience to creating some decent teammate AI.

NO GROUP INVITES!!!

When i first played any Halo, i liked the AI. But in retrospect, the AI just plain sucks. I was too enthusiastic to notice that at first.

Legendary is hard only because player's shields are 50% from normal.
I trick the AI killing itself sometimes... and melee the chieftains etc.

Seriously, Reach needs to have like 100x better AI.
Oh and Reach needs to fix AI acting. Grunts are supposed to run away if you kill their Elite/Brute but they don't do that on Heroic/Legendary in Halos (or just very rarely, too rarely), due the "more intelligent AI". Reach should really fix this, and make them act as they should be acting, even on higher difficulties.
