We really don't know much for sure. Just that Reach is a FPS and we control a spartan in a squad of five spartans, and that the game will be a prequel to the Halo series. But we can make some pretty good educated guesses.
You see, there was a planet called Reach. It was the 2nd most populated planet humanity owned (Earth was 1st, obviously) and a major millitary stronghold, and was the planet on which the spartans were trained.
The covenant showed up and completely destroyed everything. Most the spartans were deployed to the ground to protect the generators that powered the orbital defense grid, but there were simply too many. Only Master Chief survived the battle (well, not really, read first strike for details) and escaped on the Pillar of Autumn as they jumped off at a "random" coordinate and ended up at the first Halo, beginning Halo CE.
We probably won't be playing as anybody we know about from the games or the books, Bungie will probably make the campaign from the point of view of five spartans who were not introduced in the books and who's ultimate fates were not explored. This way, the game follows established canon, is interesting to both new and old players, and expands the knowledge base about this important battle in Halo history.
Reach will be a new multiplayer, so the ranks will be reset. If you are the best snowman maker in the United States, you can't just expect to be the best at sandcastle making can you?
