I have no problem playing on a mac. You are using OS X, right?
How far do you get? When I start the game I get a box titled " Halo Graphic Settings" where I can choose the type of rendering pipeline, game performance, etc. There is a choice for Server Port, ( 2302) and Client Port, (2303) and a box where you could enter an IP address, (there's no IP address in mine).
There's also a checkbox labeled "Don't show this again." I've never checked it, so I don't know how to get the box back if you have, but I guess there is a way.
They reccommend that you use the "advanced multiplayer options" that I've listed, but they are changeable. You may need to change them if you have an atypical internet connection or some sort of hardware firewall, I'm not sure, it's just a guess.
If you get to where you can click multiplayer, click it. Then click internet and the Gamespy panel comes up. Click "get list." The available games should come up. If nothing comes up, click "filters"– you may have the filters set so that they block every server that's open.
Finally, are you sure your internet connection is on? I've got a single computer on DSL and it does not go through a router, so I have to connect using "Internet Connect" before I can play Halo or do anything online.
